Speech Recognition Systems
Roll back
description |
Join us as Nick Williams gives an overview of how speech-recognition systems are created and how they work.
Nick is originally from Florida, with a BA and MA in linguistics. He works for the speech-recognition software company Sensory as a linguistic technologist. This will be a "non-technical overview" with lots of moving parts.
In the first 30 minutes, we'll have the presentation. The second 30 minutes we'll spend with Q&A and networking.
Be inspired!

Agile Fluency® Game night
Roll back
description |

Come play the Agile Fluency Game! You’ll gain new insights into the benefits and trade-offs of adopting agile practices—and you’ll have a great time doing it.
The Agile Fluency Game authentically simulates 2½ years on a software development team. It was developed so experiments in the game lead to new insights about your real-world options. As you play the game, you’ll make decisions about which agile practices to adopt. Of course, you have to deliver features, too! Or what’s the point?
This is a great experience for agile team members interested in learning more about their options; managers and leaders wanting to better understand agile development; and people who enjoy modern board games such as Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride.
*“Saved us money on our agile transition effort by getting a preview in 90 minutes!”* —Director, Agile Center of Excellence
*“Makes the need for best practices come to life.”* —Manager
*“Played first game and beautifully painted ourselves into a corner through the same mistakes real teams make. How’d that happen? Powerful teaching.”* —Senior Learning & Development Manager
*“[Our leadership team] experienced 20 years of agile learning in 4 hours!”* —Director, R & D
*“The shift from playing the game gave new focus to our discussion of leadership challenges.”* —VP, Product Management
Doors open at 6pm. We’ll start playing at 6:30. Be sure to arrive before then: the building is secured at 6:30 and no further entry is allowed.
To learn more about the game, visit https://www.agilefluency.org/game.php.
CORONAVIRUS NOTE: We've been asked if we still plan to hold this event given the concerns about Coronavirus. We DO plan to hold the event, with the following precautions:
* Attendance is limited to 16 people. (First come, first served.)
* We will not be serving food or drink or allowing food in the game room. If you bring food, we have a separate dining area where you can eat.
* Hand sanitizer and tissues will be available. Restrooms for washing hands are right across the hall.
* Do not attend if you're sick or have flu symptoms. |

***Registration through Eventbrite (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-march-happy-hour-tickets-94745368949) is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for Happy Hour at Autodesk on March 18th!
We spend quite a bit of time at work, so why not create a community and a work culture that supports meaningful relationships? This month’s theme is Work, Culture and Community. To facilitate this discussion our conversation starter will be: What is one positive way to create a positive work culture?
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
-- An employee of Autodesk will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities.
-- Anusha Neelam, PDXWIT Scholarship recipient will talk about developing relationships at work and in the community
-- Paris Hyun, PDXWIT Scholarship recipient, will talk about creating the work culture we deserve
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
-- An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing; if you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director
-- A PDXWIT volunteer opportunities table
-- A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected
Parents: PDXWIT has teamed up with DivCarePDX to provide caregiver services for kids ages 2-13! We have a limited number of tickets available and if you would like to register your child for childcare, please contact: hazel@pdxwit.org for information. You can also bring children and opt out of the childcare portion, as long as the children stick with you throughout the night.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends

Doors open at 6pm for ~~pizza and~~ conversation.

Public Tech Talk: “Adventures in Type-directed Programming”
Roll back
description |
nil |
→ |
“My programs just write themselves!” This phrase is frequently exclaimed by users of functional programming languages with advanced type systems who observe that rich types often guide them directly towards correct programs. In reality, this paradigm known as type-directed programming is far from automatic. To take advantage of rich types, a developer must reason carefully and precisely about the types of their programs, a seemingly mechanical, yet cognitively demanding process.
To this end, I will describe our efforts to understand better and ultimately automate the type-directed programming process. Our primary technique is type-directed program synthesis, where we derive synthesis algorithms from type checking systems, allowing us to build synthesizers that take advantage of rich types. In addition to describing the type-directed program synthesis process, I will present Scythe, a program assistant for type-directed programming in the Haskell programming language, and our next steps towards evolving Scythe into a next-generation live programming assistant built upon program synthesis technology. |

Pitch Club Hillsboro
Roll back
description |

Pitch Club is a collaborative workshop for any entrepreneur with the desire to create and deliver a perfect pitch. Pitch Club will assist participants in sharpening their ability to communicate with investors including gaining insight on the types of questions potential investor will ask and the best way to answer them.
Why do we pitch?
To be successful, entrepreneurs need the ability to sell their product. Pitch Club will provide insight into perfecting how to talk about your business.
Who facilitates Pitch Club?
TiE has an extensive network of Charter Members. Many of our Charter Members have run successful businesses in the past and many are current Angel Investors. We curate curriculum and leadership from the pool of talent within our network because of a shared desire to mentor entrepreneurs.
This month, Tom Kingsley, Successful Entrepreneur, TiE Charter Member, Mentor and Investor will lead the event.
What to expect?
Each attendee who intends to pitch should prepare a five minute pitch presentation. (This can include a power point projection that will be presented from your computer.) Directly after pitching a 10 minute Q&A will take place with questions to the imaginary investors about the product and pitch.
Those who attend pitch club will walk away with a better understanding of what investors look for in a pitch and how to answer the questions possible investor will ask. In addition, each presenter will receive a digital copy of their pitch and feedback from their peers and TiE Charter Members. |
