Portland R User Group monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
Main talk:
"Getting Started with R"
M. Edward (Ed) Borasky
Lightning talk:
"R in the Wild: Qmedtrix"
Homer Strong
Social hour (following talks):
Le Hana Japanese Bar & Grill
3500 SW River Parkway
Talk descriptions:
"Getting Started with R" will cover:
* Downloading and installing R from CRAN on Windows, Mac or Linux. Linux includes openSUSE, Ubuntu and Fedora.
* Running a few demos.
* The structure of CRAN.
* Where the documentation is on an installed system.
* The RSeek search engine.
Mr. Borasky will also have .ISO files of his R-based openSUSE appliance, which is at http://borasky-resear.... If you bring blank DVDs, copies can be burned for you. At the moment it has R, GGobi, Mondrian, Rcmdr and a bunch of natural language processing / text mining software, both in R and otherwise, and will also have the Spatial and ReproducibleResearch task views by the meeting. It will run on a 32-bit PC but may not support everyone's WiFi hardware.
"R in the Wild: Qmedtrix" is the first of a (hopefully) recurring series of "R in the Wild" talks that explore how R is actually being used in various companies and organizations in the Portland area. Qmedtrix is "the health care reimbursement decision expert in the workers' compensation, group health and auto medical markets."
Speaker bios:
M. Edward (Ed) Borasky is a freelance developer / engineer specializing in applied mathematics / statistics, social media analytics research and Linux performance engineering / capacity planning. He has created Linux appliances for social media analytics research and algorithmic composition and synthesis of music. His hobby is collecting hobbies.
Homer Strong is a research & development engineer at Qmedtrix Systems Inc. He enjoys reading through the R base package and avocado milkshakes. |

After the Roots Closure and August Dog Days of Summer, it's time for the Portland Linux/Unix Group to beta test a new location and date: Free Geek on the third TUESDAY of the month as opposed to Wednesday.
Having watched two venues go bankrupt, we will try a new strategy: beverages (including the correct one) and Pizza will be served and a donation requested.
Topic: UnTopic/Roundtable
Caveat: our application for the space is still pending and we may find ourselves a few blocks away at the Lucky Lab listening about how Facebook is being used at the Oregon Humane Society.

The theme of the meeting is the new features of Xcode 4. Brandon, Rich and I will be dividing them up; if anyone else wants to join in, just let me know!
Everyone needs to be under the Apple NDA; the easiest way to do that is to sign up for the Mac or iOS developer program (the free registration is fine).
A general Q&A session will follow the presentations, and then we will adjourn for beer.
(Note, the entrance to BrainSilo is in the back of the building!) |

Note - this meeting will *NOT* be at BrainSilo! We will be meeting at the new Small Society offices; I will update this listing as soon as I have the new address.
We will be discussing graphic design for programmers. There are plenty of resources out there on how to use the various programs... much less so on how to really *use* them, how to break down the image in your mind into its
component parts and put them together until it looks like what you
want. And now that we're in the iOS Era, having some graphics skill
is just as important as knowing Cocoa Touch if you want to build your
own apps.
This meeting can include any topic that's graphics or image related,
whether it's creating them, using them, or just demoing your favorite
program(s).

All about PostGIS (at Portland PostgreSQL Users Group)

All about PostGIS! Then a trip to the Lucky Lab after. |

Location-based services are all the rage these days, and almost
everyone has a latitude and longitude or two stashed away in a numeric column somewhere. But, there is so much more to it than just a point. Once relegated to government and academia, geographic information systems are becoming increasingly visible. With the PostGIS extension, PostgreSQL is a first-class geodatabase and an incredible platform for working with spatial data, but what is PostGIS and why would one use it? And beyond PostGIS there are a dizzying array of tools to load, visualize and interact with the wonderful geospatial information in your database. This talk will cover GIS and PostGIS basics and provide an introduction to geodatabases and spatial queries.
--
Edwin Knuth spent quite some time as a sysadmin and web developer before going back to school to study Environmental Science at the University of Alaska Southeast. He quickly became fascinated with Geographic Information Systems and realized that GIS was just a really neat database application. In Alaska, Edwin worked on several unique projects, including building bat detectors and using PostGIS to manage a wireless sensor network on the Juneau Icefield. He has lived in Portland for the past year and loves it very much.
Then a trip to the Lucky Lab after. |

End of summer vacations, DjangoCon, back to school, new jobs- most of us seem to have been busy-busy this last month. Our usual "presentations & beer" style meeting didn't come together this time. In its stead, please behold the introduction of the first* PDXPython Dinner Social!
Please RSVP and join us at the DESCHUTES BREWERY at 6:30, Tuesday September 14th, where we will enjoy the promise of large tables, a varied menu for the hungry, a wide range of beverages, and spirited discussion of the Pythonic pursuits that are keeping us so busy.
I hope to see you all there! |

PDX Cocoaheads

We will be discussing graphic design for programmers. There are plenty of resources out there on how to use the various programs... much less so on how to really *use* them, how to break down the image in your mind into its
component parts and put them together until it looks like what you
want. And now that we're in the iOS Era, having some graphics skill
is just as important as knowing Cocoa Touch if you want to build your
own apps.
This meeting can include any topic that's graphics or image related,
whether it's creating them, using them, or just demoing your favorite
program(s).
(Note, the entrance to BrainSilo is in the back of the building!) |

Note - this meeting will *NOT* be at BrainSilo! We will be meeting at the new Small Society offices; I will update this listing as soon as I have the new address.

Come join fellow Scala hackers and enthusiasts. The guest speaker for
this meeting will be Cooper Francis. He's going to cover some of the tricky changes that came in Scala 2.8 (particularly looking at arrays, manifests and implicits) and then do a bit of an exposition of implicits in general and how they can be used to create type classes. This should be a fun talk and I don't doubt we'll all learn something. If any of you have already delved into these changes, please come share your experiences and if you haven't, well... no better time than Thursday night to learn about them!
Once again, our meeting will be at Jive Software (courtesy of Jesse Hallett) and will be starting at 7PM. |

Location-based Apps with Amber Case and Aaron Parecki
Roll back
| description |
Amber Case and her partner Aaron Parecki are the founders of GeoLoqi. GeoLoqi is a private, real-time mobile and web platform for secure location data, with features such as Geonotes, proximal notification, and sharing real-time GPS maps with friends. Geoloqi has been covered in the Willamette Week and Oregon Business. It has been presented at eComm, Open Source Bridge, Show and Tell PDX and Research Club under the alias Non-Visual Augmented Reality with SMS and GPS.
What will you learn:
*Why developers of apps should look at what users want to do now, as well as what users want to do in their future.
*Why social apps should try to mirror realâworld relationships
*Why sharing should be about who you share with as well as how long you want the information to be available.
*Why developers should think about making apps "ambientâ and require less user interaction. |

PDX TechCoffee
Roll back
| description |
Season 3, episode 10
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.
