create Calagator::Event 1250459179 Portland Linux/Unix Group: Berkley DB Roll back

description nil PRESENTATION An Overview of Berkley DB by David Segleau Director Product Management - Berkeley DB Berkeley DB originated at the University of California, Berkeley as part of the transition (1986 to 1994) from 4.3BSD to 4.4BSD and of the effort to remove AT&T-encumbered code. It has evolved a great deal since then and is now part of Oracle where it is distributed with source code under a dual use license. Berkeley DB (BDB) is a computer software library that provides a high-performance embedded database, with bindings in C, C++, PHP, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, Tcl, Smalltalk, and other languages. BDB stores arbitrary key/data pairs as byte arrays, and supports multiple data items for a single key. BDB can support thousands of simultaneous threads of control or concurrent processes manipulating databases as large as 256 terabytes, on a wide variety of operating systems including most Unix-like and Windows systems, and real-time operating systems.

A couple hours a week can make a big difference. So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

update Calagator::Event 1250458964 IEEE Workshop on The Smart Grid - from Appliance to Generator and Back Roll back

description <h2>IEEE Workshop on The Smart Grid - from Appliance to Generator and Back</h2> Sponsors: IEEE Region 6 and Oregon Section Co-Sponsored by Oregon Power and Energy and Computer Society Chapters <b>Date: September 8, 2010</b> Venue: Ambridge Event Center, Portland, Oregon; see <a href="http://www.ambridgeevents.com/">"www.ambridgeevents.com"</a> <b>An IEEE Oregon “Smart Grid Week” (September 8-10) event</b> <b>READ <a href="http://bit.ly/bQYhzE">"FULL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION PDF"</a></b> A one day workshop with reception of how the Smart Grid provides interactions between the end uses of electricity ("appliances" or industrial processes) and utilities, viewed from the perspective of the technologies, standards, and policies that will enable those interactions and foster innovation and interoperability. The Smart Grid marries the electrical grid, an extremely complex system based on mature, conservative technology, with two fast moving innovative technologies, computers and communications. It is one of the greatest electrical, electronic and information processing challenges of our time and represents a significant engineering opportunity over the next two decades and beyond. It captures information about supply, system demand, individual usage, and pricing that fundamentally shifts how electricity is used. It enables the operators of the power system to increase efficiency and reliability while reducing costs and empowering consumers of electricity to minimize their own electricity costs. <b>Learning Objectives:</b> Attendees will gain an understanding of the monitoring, communications, security and control systems of the Smart Grid, how they interact, the flow of data and control, and design and implementation considerations including: </ul><li>Information requirements for optimal control of generating capacity, regional transmission grids, and municipal distribution grids to meet end user demands.</li> <li>How generation, transmission and distribution control systems utilize digital information.</li> <li>How suppliers and distributors of electricity use information to minimize costs while increasing reliability, flexibility, and security.</li> <li>How usage monitoring and automation will allow end users to make informed decisions that reduce their electricity costs.</li> <li>How to ensure grid security.</li> <li>Balancing optimization of the grid’s subsystems and the grid as a whole.</li></ul> <b>Target Audience:</b> The target audience is engineers, policy makers, and entrepreneurs who want to understand the Smart Grid in order to make better professional, technical and business decisions. <b>Prerequisites:</b> Attendees should be generally familiar with the electric power system, software, or data communications concepts; a power engineering background is not required. <b>Registration:</b> <a href="http://www.regonline.com/ieee_smart_grid_workshop2010">"Register online here"</a>. description nil The Portland Retro Gaming Expo is an annual exhibition of classic video games and systems in Portland, Oregon. We aim to recognize the history of video game systems and their authors, manufacturers and players. That said, the classic game collecting hobby is most closely associated with the Atari 2600/5200/7800, Nintendo NES and SNES systems, Sega Master System/Genesis, and other systems released in the 1980s and early 1990s. One can expect to see these systems as well as many lesser-known systems at the Retro Gaming Expo. In addition to home systems, we have had a larger showing of full-size arcade games to play.

description Presented by the Software Association of Oregon's Marketing + Sales Forum & Social Media Club PDX You are invited to join us for an exceptional keynote presentation followed by a Q&A session with a full panel of local collaboration and social media experts. Agenda 5:30pm Registration opens, networking 6:15pm Program begins (welcome) 6:20pm Keynote with Richard Boly 6:45pm Panel Q&A 7:30pm Program ends KEYNOTE: Embracing Social Media at the U.S. State Department: If the Oldest Federal Agency Can, Why Can’t You? The State Department is the oldest executive agency in the United States. Cold war secrecy created a need-to-know culture that impeded unofficial information sharing. State’s diplomatic corps is selected for risk aversion and trained to obtain many clearances and authorizations before officially transmitting information internally. Then the end of the Cold War was followed by the East Africa embassy bombings and 9/11. The paradigm shifted. The lack of information sharing and collaboration meant that puzzle pieces remain scattered and threats were unidentified. In this shift, the State Department’s office of eDiplomacy was born. Come find out how State Department has embraced lightweight social media tools behind the firewall to move from a need-to-know culture to need-to-share one. Meet Richard Boly, Director of eDiplomacy, US Department of State Richard Boly is a career U.S. diplomat and currently the Director of the Office of eDiplomacy, an applied technology think tank for the United States Department of State. update Calagator::Event 1250459204 SAOpdx: Remember the Milk: Location-based Apps with Amber Case and Aaron Parecki Roll back

description There’s a message from your future and it’s telling you to remember to pick up milk. Amber Case and her partner Aaron Parecki are the founders of GeoLoqi. GeoLoqi is a private, real-time mobile and web platform for secure location data, with features such as Geonotes, proximal notification, and sharing real-time GPS maps with friends. Geoloqi has been covered in the Willamette Week and Oregon Business. It has been presented at eComm, Open Source Bridge, Show and Tell PDX and Research Club under the alias Non-Visual Augmented Reality with SMS and GPS. Read CNN's article on GeoLogi, "What's Next for 'Check-in' Apps". What will you learn: 1. Why developers of apps should look at what users want to do now, as well as what users want to do in their future. 2. Why social apps should try to mirror real–world relationships 3. Why sharing should be about who you share with as well as how long you want the information to be available. 4. Why developers should think about making apps "ambient” and require less user interaction. Meet the Geeks Aaron Parecki is a Portland-based PHP developer and GPS fanatic. His fascination with GPS began at the age of 6, when he began tracing the routes of family road trips on a map with a highlighter. This interest has grown into groundbreaking new methods of location sharing and data collection. Recently he co-founded a company, Quicksilver Real Estate Solutions, developing software for the real estate industry.
