Connecting Our Futures: Portland Broadband Strategy Planning kickoff
Roll back
| description |

Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies and everyone go!
The City Council is bringing together the community partners, businesses, activists, experts and multiple City Bureaus to work on the Portland Broadband Strategic Plan.
The âConnecting Our Futureâ kick-off event will feature national and local presenters, including two nationally known speakers, Anthony Townsend of The Institute for the Future (www.iftf.org) and Joanne Hovis, CEO Columbia Telecommunications Corp.
The plan is sponsored Commissioner Amanda Fritz, who stresses that the Council and the City must develop a broadband communications infrastructure as well as connectivity strategies to increase business vitality and job creation, enhance government services, promote sustainability, transportation, health care and regulatory policies; and to improve accessibility and responsiveness of government to citizens through connectivity.
Quite a mouthful, but come at 10 am for a brief coffee mingle to engage your fellow constituents, representatives and thought leaders for some plain talk.
For complete information, including the full kick off agenda and plan charter see: http://www.portlandonline.com/cable/index.cfm?c=54013 |

If you're like me, you spend WAYYYY too much time in front of a computer. I think it would be great to have a monthly get together at a bar or pub to just get to know each other, have a brew, and yes, talk about the business. Real human interaction, in other words.
We meet the first Tuesday of every month. |

Lightning Talk & Discussion Free for All
Roll back
| description |

A completely chaotic, non-directed, organic discussion of our favorite web and design tools, ideas, methodologies, or anything relevant to the group. We had one of these in December (feel free to bring snacks, food, etc) and it went over very well. So well, in fact, many people have requested another sooner rather than later. So here's the deal:
We can set up a laptop on the projector and anyone who is interested can spend 5 minutes discussion and showing off their favorite tools, frameworks, projects - or just stand up and talk. Anyone interested should prepare a bit in advance, keep it short (we're serious about the 5 minute cutoff!), and let's cram as much (web and design related) knowledge as we can in 90 minute! |

Frank Helle, CEO of Axian, Inc., will lead an interactive discussion about the art and science of raising capital. Attendees will learn the do-s and don't-s from some real-world hands-on experiences. Share with other CEOs your experiences, insights and frustrations from past efforts and gain insights for more successful future outcomes.
This session will feature expert content provided by "an old-pro" at raising capital, Spencer Brown, Board Chair of Oregon Aesthetics Technologies, Inc., who has raised over $250,000,000 for a variety of start-up and later stage companies, and by a "first-timer" who has recently raised Angel money for his company. Learn from their successes and frustrations to improve your odds!
Our group will discuss how to attract attention, methods and styles of presentations that are most effective, when and how to adjust to the unexpected, strategies to employ, and tactics of persuasion found to be most effective. You also will receive a high-level recap of the discussion.
Open only to CEOs or Presidents of currently operating companies that have employees. Boxed lunch will be served. This program is limited to 12 participants, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Moderator: Frank Helle, CEO of Axian, Inc. - www.axian.com
Content Expert: Spencer J. Brown, Board Chair of Oregon Aesthetic Technologies, Inc. - www.ansr.com
Speaker: Frank Helle
Frank Helle is CEO of Axian, Inc., a privately-held web-services engineering firm building custom software and data solutions. Previously, he was a senior global leader at Monsanto Company. He lived in Brussels Belgium for 5 years managing manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain for Europe, Middle East, and Africa. He then lived in Singapore for 5 years as Asia-Pacific Managing Director for 3 Monsanto Divisions.
Frank's leadership helps organizations realize more of their full potential, and often focuses on turnarounds and turbo-charging growth.

Database Testing: Maximum Coverage with a Minimum of Data
Roll back
| description |
Maximum Coverage with a Minimum of Data: How Equivalence Classes can be used to narrow down the amount of data needed for analysis
In Quality Assurance, an Equivalence Class is the set of all inputs that can be seen as interchangeable with one another without impacting the results of the test, where only one of them needs to be tested in order to have confidence in the test results. Automation can certainly help facilitate running all scenarios, but it isn't always possible or practical to create a completely automated test suite. This lunch time presentation is ideal for the QA Engineer who is trying create a data set and complimentary set of test cases that accurately validates the code without having to run through a seemingly endless matrix of possibilities.
When making an analysis of the behavior of a system that is based on a large set of data, you have basically three options presented: Full data-set analysis, Analysis of a randomly sampled subset of the data, or Selection of a subset of data based on Equivalence Class Elimination.
In this presentation we will talk about the pro's and con's of each approach, and then focus on how to proceed with the Equivalence Class methodology in greater detail. Please join us for this informative and interactive discussion followed by a Q&A session.

Season 4, episode 10 -- Last episode of Season 10!
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Westside Programmers
Roll back

A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group.
This month's talk is by Richard Fobes:
"Faster than an FFT, the audio-oriented QRST (spectral transform)"
Based on the interest Phil and Ed expressed in my spectral transform,
I've spent lots of time during the past two months further developing
the software. Besides getting it to work better -- it still needs
refinement -- I've ended up creating an audio-compression method I
call QRST. I'll be playing sound files to demonstrate what the
spectral transform, the audio-compression format, and decompression
back into sound files can do, so this will be much more interesting
than the words "spectral transform" suggest.
BTW, being faster than the FFT is just one of the side effects of
having designed it for use with sound files. Fourier transforms are
sooo ssllooww. |

Process Work Institute's parking entrance is at the west side of the building. Please park by the back side of the building and come to the only big room named "class room".
---
Let's experiment a new technology for communication!
WELCOME! Welcome to world of communication!
This is one of my answers to âIs there an easier and cooler way to learn communication?â.
I have had so many troubles about communication. Human being science developed so much. There must be a new technology and practice to make things easier, and even cool way for me.
I am as a Tree hugger computer system engineer fascinated by transpersonal psychology and Process Oriented Ecology, Non Violent Communication and Deep Democracy. And I would like to mesh up and introduce for cool technical people.
And as you know, communication is important!
This new technology to inspire you about communication and team work is well designed for people who are very high functioning in technical area and interested in improving the art of communication.
Cost to Attend: Free
Organizer: Jiro Isetani
I am a student of Master of Art in Conflict Facilitation and Organizational Change at The Process Work Institute. I'm mainly from Japan, living in Portland since 1996. This is a part of my final project. |
