create Calagator::Event 1250459668 OEN CEO Roundtable with Frank Helle: Raising Money in a Difficult Economy Roll back

description nil Frank Helle, CEO of Axian, Inc., will lead an interactive discussion about the art and science of raising capital. Attendees will learn the do-s and don't-s from some real-world hands-on experiences. Share with other CEOs your experiences, insights and frustrations from past efforts and gain insights for more successful future outcomes. This session will feature expert content provided by "an old-pro" at raising capital, Spencer Brown, Board Chair of Oregon Aesthetics Technologies, Inc., who has raised over $250,000,000 for a variety of start-up and later stage companies, and by a "first-timer" who has recently raised Angel money for his company. Learn from their successes and frustrations to improve your odds! Our group will discuss how to attract attention, methods and styles of presentations that are most effective, when and how to adjust to the unexpected, strategies to employ, and tactics of persuasion found to be most effective. You also will receive a high-level recap of the discussion. Open only to CEOs or Presidents of currently operating companies that have employees. Boxed lunch will be served. This program is limited to 12 participants, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Moderator: Frank Helle, CEO of Axian, Inc. - www.axian.com Content Expert: Spencer J. update Calagator::Event 1250459666 Database Testing: Maximum Coverage with a Minimum of Data Roll back

description Maximum Coverage with a Minimum of Data: How Equivalence Classes can be used to narrow down the amount of data needed for analysis In Quality Assurance, an Equivalence Class is the set of all inputs that can be seen as interchangeable with one another without impacting the results of the test, where only one of them needs to be tested in order to have confidence in the test results. Automation can certainly help facilitate running all scenarios, but it isn't always possible or practical to create a completely automated test suite. This lunch time presentation is ideal for the QA Engineer who is trying create a data set and complimentary set of test cases that accurately validates the code without having to run through a seemingly endless matrix of possibilities. When making an analysis of the behavior of a system that is based on a large set of data, you have basically three options presented: Full data-set analysis, Analysis of a randomly sampled subset of the data, or Selection of a subset of data based on Equivalence Class Elimination. In this presentation we will talk about the pro's and con's of each approach, and then focus on how to proceed with the Equivalence Class methodology in greater detail. Please join us for this informative and interactive discussion followed by a Q&A session. TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference. So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. description nil A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group. This month's talk is by Richard Fobes: "Faster than an FFT, the audio-oriented QRST (spectral transform)" Based on the interest Phil and Ed expressed in my spectral transform, I've spent lots of time during the past two months further developing the software. Besides getting it to work better -- it still needs refinement -- I've ended up creating an audio-compression method I call QRST. I'll be playing sound files to demonstrate what the spectral transform, the audio-compression format, and decompression back into sound files can do, so this will be much more interesting than the words "spectral transform" suggest. BTW, being faster than the FFT is just one of the side effects of having designed it for use with sound files. Fourier transforms are sooo ssllooww.

description Process Work Institute's parking entrance is at the west side of the building. Please park by the back side of the building and come to the only big room named "class room". --- Let's experiment a new technology for communication! WELCOME! Welcome to world of communication! This is one of my answers to “Is there an easier and cooler way to learn communication?”. I have had so many troubles about communication. Human being science developed so much. There must be a new technology and practice to make things easier, and even cool way for me. I am as a Tree hugger computer system engineer fascinated by transpersonal psychology and Process Oriented Ecology, Non Violent Communication and Deep Democracy. And I would like to mesh up and introduce for cool technical people. And as you know, communication is important! create Calagator::Event 1250459654 Mobile Portland: Ambient Location Apps and Geoloqi Roll back

description nil Named by JWT Intelligence as one of the 100 things to watch in 2011, Portland's Geoloqi has garnered national attention for being at the forefront of location-based services. Forbes recently asked if Geoloqi was "Foursquare's Biggest Threat?" Why is there so much buzz for this small project in Portland? Because Geoloqi is on the cutting edge of taking location information and making it truly useful. As Aaron Parecki, one of the co-founders of Geoloqi, explained to Forbes, "I’d like to share my location with a client if I’m meeting them somewhere, so they can know when I’ll arrive." We're honored to have Aaron Parecki and Amber Case as our first presenters of 2011. They'll be talking about the next generation of location apps and the importance of ambient location services. Presentation Description Wouldn't it be nice if your colleague's phone could SMS its location to you? If you know position and velocity, you know when they'll arrive. The result: the interface disappears. No redundant actions or queries. The same software could turn your lights on as you approach the house. Or automatically "check in" to certain locations for you. Or leave a note for yourself the next time you're at the store. Augmented reality and location were hot topics last year, but there is often a confusion between aesthetics vs. practicality, and fantasy vs. reality. This presentation will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of visual and non-visual augmented reality. In the presentation, they will highlight why developers of apps should look at what users want to do now, as well as what users want to do in the future, why social apps should try to mirror real-world relationships, why sharing should be about who you share with as well as how long you’re sharing, and why developers should think about how to make apps "ambient” and require less user interaction. They will cover the current players in the geolocation market, the location market itself, and why location is such a big deal. They will discuss real-time location sharing, geolocation triggers such as geonotes, proximal notification and automatic checkins, and privacy and security. What Will Be Covered * The location market. Where it is now and future projections. * Why the market is here (timing, hardware, affordability, etc.). * Some history (PARC research, etc.) * The current players: What they’re doing and where they fall short * What we’re passionate about and are trying to solve. * Philosophy of interface evaporation. * (Other cool things you can do with ambient location and sensors (fun home automation tricks and pranks). Aaron Parecki Aaron Parecki is a Portland-based iPhone and PHP developer interested in solving practical problems with technology. In his free time, he enjoys geolocation, linguistics, and building home automation systems and IRC bots with a sense of humor. For the past 2.5 years, he has been tracking and visualizing his location every 6 seconds, making him a frequent presenter at the Portland data visualization group. His fascination with location sharing and GPS began at the age of 6, when he traced the routes of family road trips on a map with a highlighter. He combined these interests and created Geoloqi.com with Amber Case in an effort to help people connect in the real world. Aaron has 11 years experience in web app development, database design, graphic design and printing, and server administration. You can learn more about Aaron at aaronparecki.com, and you can follow him on twitter at @aaronpk. Amber Case Amber Case is a cyborg anthropologist and user experience designer from Portland, Oregon. Her main focus is mobile software, augmented reality and data visualization, as these reduce the amount of time and space it takes for people to connect with information. Case founded Geoloqi.com, a private location sharing application, out of a frustration with existing social protocols around text messaging and wayfinding. Last year, Case was featured in Fast Company as one of their Most Influential Women in Technology and spoke at TED on technology and humans. She worked with Fortune 500 companies at Wieden+Kennedy and now works as a user experience designer at Vertigo Software in Portland, Oregon. You can learn more about Case at caseorganic.com, cyborganthropology.com and on Twitter at @caseorganic.

create Calagator::Event 1250459652 OMSI Science Pub! - Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World Roll back

description nil Visionary game designer Jane McGonigal reveals how we can harness the power of games to solve real-world problems and boost global happiness. More than 174 million Americans are gamers, and the average young person in the United States will spend 10,000 hours gaming by the age of 21. According to world-renowned game designer Jane McGonigal, the reason for this mass exodus to virtual worlds is that videogames are increasingly fulfilling genuine human needs. In this groundbreaking exploration of the power and future of gaming, McGonigal reveals how we can use the lessons of game design to fix what is wrong with the real world. Drawing on positive psychology, cognitive science, and sociology, Reality Is Broken uncovers how game designers have hit on core truths about what makes us happy and used these discoveries to astonishing effect in virtual environments. Videogames consistently provide the exhilarating rewards, stimulating challenges, and epic victories that are so often lacking in the real world. But why, McGonigal asks, should we use the power of games for escapist entertainment alone? Her research suggests that gamers are expert problem solvers and collaborators, since they cooperate with other players to overcome daunting virtual challenges, and she helped pioneer a fast-growing genre of games that aims to turn gameplay to socially positive ends. In Reality Is Broken, she reveals how these new Alternate Reality Games are already improving the quality of our daily lives, fighting social problems like depression and obesity, and addressing vital twenty-first century challenges—and she forecasts the thrilling possibilities that lie ahead. She introduces us to games like World Without Oil, a simulation designed to brainstorm—and therefore avert—the challenges of a worldwide oil shortage, and Evoke, a game commissioned by the World Bank Institute that sends players on missions to address issues from poverty to climate change. Jane McGonigal, PhD, is the director of Game Research and Development at the Institute for the Future. Her work has been featured in The Economist, Wired, and The New York Times and on MTV, CNN, and NPR. In 2009, BusinessWeek called her one of the 10 most important innovators to watch. She has given keynote addresses at TED, South by Southwest Interactive, and the Game Developers Conference and was a featured speaker at The New Yorker Conference. This Science Pub is presented in partnership with Powell’s Books. Powell’s will have Jane’s books available for purchase at the Science Pub and Jane will sign them after the talk.

create Calagator::Event 1250459650 Galois tech talk: Program Inconsistency Detection using Weakest Preconditions Roll back

description nil Presented by Aaron Tomb. Many tools exist to automate the search for defects in software source code. However, many of these tools have not been widely applied, partly because they tend to work least well in the most common case: on large software systems that have only partial specifications describing correct behavior --- often a collection of independent assertions sprinkled throughout the program. Recent research has suggested that a large class of software bugs fall into the category of inconsistencies, or cases where two pieces of program code make incompatible assumptions. Existing approaches to inconsistency detection have used intentionally unsound techniques aimed at bug-finding rather than verification. In this dissertation, we describe an inconsistency detection analysis that subsumes previous work and is instead based on the foundation of the weakest precondition calculus. We have applied our analysis to a large body of widely-used open-source software, and found a number of bugs.

update Calagator::Event 1250459375 Portland Java User Group Roll back

description This month's topic: Gradle ---------- Speaker: Merlyn Albery-Speyer ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, Trees restaurant in the same building). http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!) This month's topic: Gradle Come to the session if you want to participate in learning more about Gradle. Gradle is a powerful layer of Groovy built on top of a number of established tools and libraries. Smart guys have borrowed from the pioneering work of Ant, Maven, Gant, Buildr and come up with an expressive, concise, and convention-rich build tool for the Java family. For this session, there won't be any slides. I'm also not going to stand up and talk at you. Instead, I'm going to rely heavily on your involvement. I'll start with an introduction to Gradle, and then very quickly go into using it in practice. After a few minutes of that I'll open it up to go wherever we're most interested in. I'm not a Gradle expert, yet I believe that my Groovy background in conjunction with a few days of earnest usage have taught me a lot. This session will rely heavily on an internet connection, and we'll be googling for answers together if need be. Do this ahead of time: What is your intention for the session? Spend some time deliberately focusing on what it is you want out of the session. Bring that will you and share it with us. It will help us all focus on what's important and go some way to helping you get the most out of the session. Also, go have a quick read about Gradle on their website. That will save us all some time, help us get to the interesting details sooner, and be a good source of informed questions for you. ---------- Speaker: Merlyn Albery-Speyer I'm Merlyn, a Portland-based programmer with strong ties to both Agile PDX and Groovy. I'm also a member of an Agile team at YesMail, and I blog under the handle "curious attempt bunny". ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise.
