Women Who Hack
Roll back
| description |
This will be a casual get together for women who want to hack on projects with or around other women. All types of projects (software and hardware), languages, platforms and experience levels are welcome. Remember, no experience is an experience level!

What you should bring:
* Your laptop or other equipment
* Yourself!
We'll provide:
* the space, including lots of seating and tables

* some snacks, including gluten-free and vegan options.
Our goal is to support local women hackers (and aspiring hackers) by providing a safe, welcoming environment in which you can connect with and learn from each other.
We're kid-friendly, too, so feel free to bring your children with you.

All participants of Women Who Hack agree to follow the <a href="http://citizencodeofconduct.org/">Citizen Code of Conduct</a>.

Can we be agile if the organization isn't agile? Does agile have to roll across the organization in order to thrive? And, if it must, how do we do this? What organizations in town are agile beyond the engineering group?
The Downtown Pub Lunchers voted this topic most desirable for their March discussion.
Come on down and share the wealth of your knowledge. Questions? Answers? All are welcome.
We start at 12p and end at 1p. You'll find us in the back. RSVP's ([email protected]) are encouraged but not required. |

O!PLA Across The Borders includes winners from this year’s O!PLA Festival of Polish Animation — an exceptional sampling of contemporary films from the land of fields. This new collection includes independent work, student films, music videos, and animated epigrams. Presented by ASIFA Portland and Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH. O!PLA Across The Borders 2014 describes a Kafka-esque city where beetle people struggle to coexist with normal; a famous surrealist painting brought to life with stunning, stylized CG animation; a Polish-flavored version of The Matrix, where domestic routines are all part of the malevolent computer’s master plan.
FREE for Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH & ASIFA Portland members
FREE for LAIKA employees & PNCA animation majors (show badge or school ID)
Tickets: $5 General Admission

Elixir Games PDX

**"Let's get functional... functional." -Olambdia Newton-John**
We'll be kicking off the first in a series of Elixir Games meetups. The "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike.
Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, OTP patterns.
If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them.
Food and drink will be provided. There will also be small desk fodder prizes for the winning teams.
**Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go.**

#Big Data in Healthcare and Biomedicine:#
##Opportunities and Challenges##
**› Please RSVP via Eventbrite [HERE](http://bit.ly/1BNj4XW)**
Medicine is one of the last areas to fully embrace information technology. However, recent investments have led to widespread use of electronic health records while advances in gene sequencing and other biotechnologies have now led medicine to be awash in data. While this data provides new opportunities for better understanding of health and disease, there are also many challenges to its effective use. In this talk, Dr. Hersh will describe the potential for Big Data in Healthcare and Biomedicine but also discuss the myriad of challenges for its effective use.
*William Hersh, MD, FACMI, FACP is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology in the School of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Hersh is a leader and innovator in biomedical informatics both in education and research.*
**› Doors will open at 5:30 for a 30-minute networking happy half-hour! The food, beer and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic. The presentation will begin right at 6p.**
› Stay tuned for the latest developments and updates on this and upcoming events by joining our Meetup group, [New Relic FutureTalks PDX](http://www.meetup.com/New-Relic-FutureTalks-PDX/), and following us on Twitter @newrelic.
› FutureTalk is brought to you by **New Relic** in collaboration with **[TAO](http://www.techoregon.org)** |

The 1 Million cups weekly meetings are a great opportunity for people and founders to connect.
Each week we invite a founder of a local startup or unique local business to give a short presentation. Then we follow up with a productive guided Q & A from the audience. Founders learn great insights about the businesses and the audience learns from people making great ideas happen in our exciting Portland startup scene.
During the month of January we are focussing on Female Founders. In February we bring in Foodie Founders. Stay tuned for March's theme!
No registration needed, no pretense allowed, just great coffee, conversation and connections every week. Come on by. |

Roll back
| description |

→ |
This will be a casual get together for women who want to hack on projects with or around other women. All types of projects (software and hardware), languages, platforms and experience levels are welcome. Remember, no experience is an experience level!
Don't have anything to work on? Come, and we'll help you find a project!
What you should bring:
* Your laptop or other equipment
* Yourself!
We'll provide:
* the space, including lots of seating and tables
* internet
* some snacks, including gluten-free and vegan options.
Our goal is to support local women hackers (and aspiring hackers) by providing a safe, welcoming environment in which you can connect with and learn from each other.
We're kid-friendly, too, so feel free to bring your children with you.
Women Who Hack is open to all self-identified women and genderqueer persons, as well as accompanied children of all genders.
All participants of Women Who Hack agree to follow the <a href="http://citizencodeofconduct.org/">Citizen Code of Conduct</a>.
Questions? Get in touch: [email protected].

Portland Puppet User Group March 2nd Meeting
Roll back
| description |
We meet on the 1st Monday of every month. All are invited to join!
Agenda for March 2nd:
* 6 - 6:30pm: Eat pizza and chat with other Puppet users
* 6:30 - 7:15: "How Fuel Uses Puppet to Deploy OpenStack" - Christopher Aedo, Mirantis
* 7:15 - 8:00 "Advanced Metrics in PE Puppet Server" - Chris Price, Puppet Labs
* 8:00 - 8:15 Plan next meeting and mingle
"How Fuel Uses Puppet to Deploy OpenStack" - Christopher Aedo
Master or masterless, sequencing solutions, giant catalogs, getting in sync with upstream community manifests, and more - Christopher Aedo (from Mirantis) will talk about the lessons learned while building Fuel, the open source OpenStack deployment and management tool.
"Advanced Metrics in PE Puppet Server" - Chris Price
In this talk we take a look at some of the advanced metrics that are tracked inside of Puppet Server in Puppet Enterprise. We'll look at some settings, tools, and scripts that you can use to get detailed information about how your server is performing, what operations are taking the most CPU time, etc. We'll also get a sneak peak at some of the improvements that will be coming in a new PE release in the very near future.
Get in touch with meg@ puppetlabs.com if you're interested in talking (even briefly!) about how you're using Puppet. Also, let us know if you'd like to be on the schedule next month! You don't need to be an expert to speak - we love to hear about what folks are doing with Puppet.
If you have an idea for what you would like to see presented, please post those ideas in the PDX [Puppet Google Group](https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pdx-puppet).
Meat, veggie, gluten-free, and vegan pizza will be available. The office is wheelchair accessible, and has an elevator. There is bike parking on the street and just inside the parking garage at the corner of Stark and SW 1st Ave. Parking is available on the street or at one of the many pay to park lots near the office. |
