update Calagator::Event 1250469901 Portland Linux/Unix Group Roll back

description PLUG: Portland's monthly, three-track open source conference! Celebrating 20 years of hosting Portland's best open source and technology freedom speakers. This month's topic To Be Announced First Thursday: General Meeting at PSU Third Tuesday: Advanced Topics at Free Geek Third Sunday: Hands-on Clinic at Free Geek Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Who: Michael Dexter<br> What: Switching to BSD Unix from GNU/Linux<br> Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br> When: Thursday, May 5th, 2016 at 7pm<br> Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br> Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live (PSU WiFi Permitting)<br> By popular vote! Got the systemd/iptables/wish-I-had-OpenZFS blues? Relief is just a download away! BSD Unix has been quietly powering the Internet and a little bit of just about EVERYTHING that rubs ones and zeros together for... ever. Once named the "Greatest Software Ever Written*", the University of California, Berkeley Computer Science Research Group's "Berkeley Software Distribution" is better than ever in the form of modern FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and their derivatives. * http://www.informationweek.com/d/d-id/1046033?print=yes LEARN what Enterprise-class file systems and firewalls are available out-of-the box on modern BSD Unix SEE the bhyve "BSD Hypervisor" in action on FreeBSD FRAG** better on FreeBSD thanks to its faster-than-Linux Linux emulation ** I take people's word for it This talk was originally proposed by long-time GNU/Linux user Larry Cafiero for LinuxFest Nortwest 2016 but was delivered by Portlander Michael Dexter when Larry could not attend the event. About Michael Dexter Michael fell in love with BSD Unix the moment he sat down in front of it at Lewis and Clark College in January of 1991. Since then, he has shepherded five virtualization and containment strategies into three BSDs, raised money for BSD efforts, organized three bhyvecon conferences, written dozens of articles about BSD Unix and spoken about BSD Unix-related topics at more events than he can count. While PDXBSDCon has yet to take place, Michael is seriously considering printing "PDXBSDCon 2014" t-shirts. Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting. Rideshares Available PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings.

description We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. # PRESENTATIONS at 7pm ### # After presentations we'll have more socializing time. # Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month! # ARRIVING BY BIKE? To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking. <em>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. create Calagator::Event 1250470203 Galois tech talk: Interrupts in OS code: let’s reason about them. Yes, this means concurrency. Roll back

description nil abstract: ------------- Existing modeled and verified operating systems (OS’s) typically run on uniprocessor platforms and run with interrupts mostly disabled. This makes formal reasoning more tractable: execution is mostly sequential. The eChronos OS is a real-time OS used in tightly constrained devices, running on (uniprocessor) embedded micro-controllers. It is used in the DARPA-funded HACMS program, where it runs the flight control software of a high-assurance quadcopter. To provide low latency, the eChronos OS runs with interrupts enabled and provides a preemptive scheduler. In terms of verification, this means that concurrency reasoning is required, which significantly increases the complexity: application and OS instructions may be interleaved with interrupt handler instructions. In our work we explicitly model the effect of interrupts and their handling by the hardware and OS. We provide a general formal model of the interleaving between OS code, application code and interrupt handlers. We then instantiate this model to formalise the scheduling behavior of the eChronos OS, and prove the main scheduler property: the running task is always the highest-priority runnable task. bio: ----- June Andronick is a Senior Researcher at Data61|CSIRO (formerly NICTA). Her research focuses on increasing the reliability of critical software systems, by mathematically proving that the code behaves as expected and satisfies security and safety requirements. She contributed to the seL4 correctness proof and now focuses on concurrency reasoning for OS code. She leads the concurrency software verification research in Data61, and is deputy leader of the Trustworthy Systems group. She was recognised in 2011 by MIT’s Technology Review as one of the world’s top young innovators (TR35). She holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Paris-Sud, France.
