update Calagator::Event 1250469859 First Fridays Free Days and Five-Year Anniversary (and 200th Calagator event) Roll back

description Collective Agency turned 5 years old on June 15th (first planning meeting) and August 1st (opened as our own location). A lot has happened in 5 years: we've been an experiment in workplace democracy with optional participation, making here like our ideal city or village. We've hosted more than 200 tech events open to the public listed on Calagator, and many more non-tech events (over 1,000 paid meetings, and around 1,000 member lunches). We've won awards as a coworking place and a workplace democracy. Come work and have conversations at Collective Agency during our First Fridays Free Days, and join an optional potluck birthday celebration lunch. Members, come as usual, and you can bring guests, it’ll be the same for you as it is every day but with more people here. There are 2 requirements: 1) RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/groups/collectiveagency/ or http://www.meetup.com/Collective-Agency-community-workplace/ or Twitter @CollectiveAgenC with the time you expect to be here, what you’ll be working on (you can include a link to a website or social media), and what you’re looking for. This will be posted on our website, RSVP pages, and here on the wall. 2) While you’re here, aside from lunch, you’ll find ways to talk with at least 2 people here for at least 30 minutes total. Schedule: • 9am – Open for free • 12pm – Optional potluck lunch, with birthday cake. • 5pm – End of Open House People here for free will have access to the big loft room, the kitchen, and restrooms, but not: conference rooms, locker storage, computer monitors. You can come in groups of up to 14 people but everybody has to qualify and do the actions described above. There are no age restrictions. The community guidelines are the core of the terms of service: http://collectiveagency.co/community-guidelines Collective Agency turned 5 years old on June 15th (first planning meeting) and August 1st (opened as our own location). create Calagator::Event 1250470231 Coffee w/ Co-Founders @ Breken Kitchen Roll back

description nil First I'd like to apologize to all of you for not being more active. I've been a bit overwhelmed lately so I've not been able to arrange a meetup. However, it's been February since our last get together so this is long overdue! We're hitting Breken Kitchen on the NW side of town. The space is not very large so we'll do what we can to find a place that doesn't impact the other patrons. Perhaps we can gather on their back deck. Either way, we'll have placards in the area so it's easily identifiable. Please be sure to patronize this establishment. The worse thing we can do is show up as a big group and not at least buy a cup of coffee (thus the name). Looking forward to seeing you all there! Josh Carter Co-Founder/CEO Brightwork http://brightwork.io About Coffee w/ Co-Founders: This event is meant to be a very informal gathering of entrepreneurs to talk about their projects, challenges, and successes. This event is not just for tech founders. We usually see all types of business owners from a variety of industries.

create Calagator::Event 1250470228 OpenStack PDX May Roll back

description nil Our next get together will be in May with David Stewart from Intel! He is joining us to talk about "doubling performance in Swift with no code changes" All interpreted languages come to the point in their evolution where a radical turn is needed to optimize performance and a Just In Time (JIT) compilation is the direction they have all turned. We would argue that now is the time for Python. In perhaps an extreme case, Swift’s performance is greatly affected by the latency of Python’s default CPython interpreter. Recently Swift throughput was improved 111% on a 15 node storage cluster and response time was boosted 87%. This was achieved by using PyPy, the JIT version of Python. This talk will describe a proof-of-concept study using PyPy in production with Swift, offer a roadmap for broad adoption of PyPy in the Python world, and provide clear steps for implementing PyPy in Swift. Bio: David Stewart is the manager of the Server Language Optimization Team in the Data Center Software Technology group at Intel where he helped launch the effort. David has been an operating systems development expert for his whole career, starting out with Unix in 1980. David serves on various boards including the Yocto Project Advisory Board and the CE Linux Working Group, both part of the Linux Foundation. Before the formation of his current team, David held a variety of management positions in Intel’s Software and Services Group and in Intel’s Desktop Boards and Systems division.

Every month 15-35 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for devops – join us! Join us for the April meeting of PdxDevOps. Agenda: Colin Hom from CoreOS Colin will showcase how CoreOS deploys production Kubernetes clusters on AWS and the open-source tooling around this process. Kube-aws built around the idea of "cluster artifacts" and is designed to be secure, auditable and reproducible. A simple templating system is leveraged to generate cluster configuration as a set of declarative configuration templates that can be version controlled, audited and re-deployed. Since the entirety of the provisioning is by AWS CloudFormation and cloud-init, there’s no need for external configuration management tools on your end. Batteries included! pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. update Calagator::Event 1250470102 Getting Declarative with Cats & Manifold w/ Matthew Lyon Roll back

description If you've ever had to interrupt a series of operations with ugly nested branching logic and thought, "there should be a better way", you're not alone. I'll show you how to use some basic category theory abstractions from the cats library (http://funcool.github.io/cats/latest) by funcool to write declarative code that's easier to read and reason about, and how to integrate it with the manifold library (https://github.com/ztellman/manifold) for declarative asynchronous programming. Matthew Lyon helps humans and computers communicate. Our scheduled speaker had to cancel unexpectedly so we'll have lighting talks and office hours. The talks don't need to be formal at all. Just take 5-15 minutes sharing something you've learned or are working on. To get the ball rolling I'll do: "What I've learned about React Native and ClojureScript" So what have you been working on? Don't be shy. Your group needs you. And as for the office hours ... just come with your questions, problems and challenges and we'll try to help. Thanks. Julio

Portland developers from Wal-Mart, Jaguar Land Rover and a big retail company in Beaverton will tell you a bit about themselves, how they got into their current roles and what exaclty they do there. They'll then take any and all questions from the audience. Space is limited so RSVP now!
