Roll back
| description |

Greetings Fellow Lovers of Data! If you hit only one DAMA PDX event this year, this is the one. We scored this month hooking Michele Goetz from Forrester research in Boston on the topic of Agile Development and Data
Management.

DETAILS

Agile development for enterprise applications alone is of little use without accompanying data management support. This pressures data management and architecture to deliver data services on Agile application development timetables. They need to adopt Agile development practices themselves or risk greater data chaos through a system of data silos, inconsistent insights, and inconsistent views of the customer.
This discussion will identify:

How agile development will cause a reset in the way data services are developed and rendered

How to align agile development in DevOps with data architecture

Where you can get started

What good agile practices look like and deliver

For more information and to register, go to: http://www.damapdx.org/
Schedule:
• 8:30 - 9:00 am - Sign In
• 9:00 - 10:15 am - Presentation
• 10:15 - 10:30 am - Break, Chapter Announcements
• 10:30 - 11:30 am - Presentation continued
Is your organization a corporate member of DAMA PDX? This presentation is free for you!
Otherwise Cost is $5 for students with valid ID to cover speaker costs and refreshments.
or $15 for the general public.

About Our Speaker:

Michele serves enterprise and data architecture professionals. She is a leading expert on data management, artificial intelligence, data governance, master data management, and data quality. Michele helps enterprises leverage data assets more effectively by improving the availability and accuracy of the information that businesses use in processes and analytics.

About DAMA Portland:

Computer Science Colloquium: Drucker-Prager Elastoplasticity for Sand Animation
Roll back
| description |

Title: Drucker-Prager Elastoplasticity for Sand Animation
Speaker: Joseph Teran, UCLA
Abstract:
We simulate sand dynamics using an elastoplastic, continuum assumption. We demonstrate that the Drucker-Prager plastic flow model combined with a Hencky-strain-based hyperelasticity accurately recreates a wide range of visual sand phenomena with moderate computational expense. We use the Material Point Method (MPM) to discretize the governing equations for its natural treatment of contact, topological change and history dependent constitutive relations. The Drucker-Prager model naturally represents the frictional relation between shear and normal stresses through a yield stress criterion. We develop a stress projection algorithm used for enforcing this condition with a non-associative flow rule that works naturally with both implicit and explicit time integration. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach on examples undergoing large deformation, collisions and topological changes necessary for producing modern visual effects.
Bio:
Joseph Teran is a professor of applied mathematics at UCLA. His research is focused on numerical methods for partial differential equations arising in classical physics. This includes computational solids, computational fluids, multi-material interactions, fracture dynamics and computational biomechanics. Exciting applications include computer graphics and movie special effects at Walt Disney Animation. Professor Teran was a recipient of a 2011 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and a 2010 Young Investigator award from the Office of Naval Research. In 2008, Discover Magazine named him one of the 50 “Best Brains in Science” which lauded him and other young scientists as “young visionaries who are transforming the way we understand the world”. |

Best Practices for Destroying People’s Dreams (And Other Ways UX Can Be Helpful)
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Ever been handed a project or had someone come to you with an idea that immediately made you think, “This is probably a waste of time.” What if, instead of taking on the project, you first went to find out if it’s a good idea?
This talk is a mix of stories about people whose dreams were dashed (and they were thankful for it) as well as practical advice for helping you find out if that idea is any good.
The talk title comes from the fact that, over the course of his career, Matthew killed several projects by providing evidence that the project shouldn’t even begin (or should be stopped in its tracks). Twice, he’s had to deliver the bad news to someone who then went on to shutter their entire business. And they thanked him for it. Spending $20,000 to make that early decision meant avoiding spending millions to build something no one would want enough to justify the money, time, and effort.

Our Presenter, Matthew Oliphant

Matthew has been getting people from WTF to FTW since 1999 when he started down the UX road as a Technical Writer. He’s worked as a freelancer, in corporate cube-farms, agencies, and startups. He is currently Director of User Experience at Vadio, an innovative video startup.
Matthew has designed and led the development of several multi-million-dollar products, redesigned large-scale corporate design and development processes, led research efforts to understand the needs of organ transplant recipients, and ghost-edits articles on web design and development on the side.
He continues his mission to Inform and Educate by running Refresh Portland (this site!), a non-profit organization devoted to highlighting new voices and interesting perspectives on all things web-related. |

StartupBus 2016: Portland stop
Roll back

Equal parts hackathon, road trip and global community, StartupBus is a life accelerator that skyrockets you to your greatest potential. It’s an initiation into a community of over a thousand people who are on the same journey to greatness, on and off the bus.
Will StartupBus be uncomfortable? Yes, comfort and growth don’t coexist. Will you have to fight off ravenous, battery starved techies to charge your devices? Yep. Will there be consistent Internet? Yeah… probably not.
Will it be the single greatest adventure of your personal and professional life? Ab-so-effing-lutely.
One more question, but only you have the answer.
Are you crazy enough to jump on a bus conceive, build and launch a startup with a group strangers in 72 hours? |

If you're just starting off on your journey into technology, it can be a challenge to know how to demonstrate competency to get in the door to your first job. Then, it's an even greater challenge to continue practicing, learning, and creating in the evolving technology landscape.
This workshop is all about setting up your blueprint for a career of lifelong-learning and collaboration. That means honing your core competency and branching out with complimentary skills that provide range, perspective, and flexibility.
## **WHO SHOULD TAKE IT:**
This workshop is designed for people who are actively thinking about advancing their path in the tech industry.
## **PARTICIPANTS WILL GAIN:**
This workshop is not about just "looking good to get a job" but what "is" good on the job. Get insight into the practices of some of the most creative and highly innovative teams in how they build flexibility and specialization into their production environment.
Participants will walk out with a literal roadmap to achieve "T" skills for their ideal career path, along with practical recommendations on the strengths and limitations of online learning, traditional academic credentials, code schools, mentorship, open source contribution, and everything in between.
Fair warning: This might be a gateway drug into Hack University.
