create Calagator::Event 1250470887 RuNT. Humanizing Technology with Mark Wyner Roll back

description nil Don’t look now, but your life depends on user experience design. Smartphones lead us around by the hand, we strap computers to body parts like it’s going out of style, and autonomous cars are already on the road. Thankfully, Mark Wyner is determined to humanize those experiences. As a user experience designer, Mark has architected software for the US Army, Nike, Intel, Chrysler, and more. He has eloquently addressed the need for interfaces we understand and trust, both in writing and as a speaker at events like Webvisions. Come hear about his efforts to work with the machines, before they take over for good.

create Calagator::Event 1250470886 Introduction to Machine Learning (with Google Cloud ML APIs) Roll back

description nil If you are planning to jump the Machine Learning bandwagon, wait no more! In this introductory ML meetup, we will explore how to use Machine Learning using Google Cloud ML APIs. Here are some fun things we will show how to do using the ML API's: * Understand the content of an image: Classify images into thousands of categories (e.g., "sailboat", "Eiffel Tower"), detect individual objects and faces within images, and find and read printed words contained within images. * Convert audio to text: Recognize over 80 languages and variants, to support your global user base. Transcribe the speech into text to enable use cases like command-and-control through voice. * Learn the structure and meaning of text: Extract information about people, places, events and much more, mentioned in text documents, news articles or blog posts. You can also use it to understand sentiment about your product on social media or parse intent from customer conversations happening in a call center or a messaging app.

update Calagator::Event 1250470883 Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting Roll back

description We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. ##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm This month we're doing something a little different! Lauren Voswinkel will kick off this months meetup with a code-retreat exercise. "We'll take 30-45 minutes to work on Conway's Game of Life. Pair programming is *highly* encouraged, but is not required. This month we will just be talking about the problem and getting a feel for the problem set. In subsequent months, we'll be doing the same exercise, however, there will be restrictions put in place to force us to think about our code and our designs more in depth. After each coding exercise, we'll take some time to talk about what we learned during the exercise, as well as what approaches worked and what didn't. The whole idea of this exercise is to have a space and time to actively practice coding." **Please Bring Your Laptops** How do *you* get from cat to dog? Ryan Wise will talk about his project that: "illustrates breadth-first search and A* search in Ruby and solves the following example problem: Find the fewest edits it takes to transform one word into another with all intermediate words being found in a dictionary. E.g., a shortest transformation from "cat" to "dog" could look like this: cat--> cot--> dot--> dog. Note that each step represents one edit (one letter changed, added, or subtracted) and that each edit lands us on another dictionary word. This pattern continues until the target word is found." After presentations we'll have more socializing time. ##**Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!** ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking. ABOUT THE GROUP: *The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!* We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. ##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm How do *you* get from cat to dog? update Calagator::Event 1250470874 Elixir Games PDX - Architecture: It's Not Just for Skyscrapers Roll back

description This month we're going to take a look at the architecture of a couple open source Elixir libraries, talk about them, how they fit with OTP principles that Elixir inherits from the Erlang ecosystem, and device a strategy for how to bring the existing design into line with a more OTP-y way of doing things. We'll also discuss why that's valuable or desirable and start to iterate on making those changes together. For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike. If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches. Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns. If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them. Food and drinks will be provided. Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go. http://elixir-lang.org/install.html Special thanks to my friend Jeff Weiss and Puppet, ‘the leader in IT automation’, for hosting us. description nil <p>Greetings Legal Hackers:</p> <p>After a too-long hiatus, we're back on track for an October meetup. We're moving to Wednesday this time (Oct 26) from 6 to 8 at the Jaguar Land Rover Technology Center at NW 14th and Quimby. </p> <p>Our speaker this time around will be <a href="http://devendra.design/">Alexandra Devandra</a>, an attorney and legal design consultant who is also a co-founder of Shape the Law, the first Unconference for Lawyers.  Alix will be discussing <a href="https://designthinking.ideo.com/">design thinking</a> as a tool for lawyers and other legal businesses to build and iterate products and services.</p> <p>We'll also be discussing ways to more closely align the work of the legal innovation meetup with the Oregon Bar's Futures Task Force, a new group formed to "Examine how the Oregon State Bar can best serve its members by supporting all aspects of their continuing development and better serve and protect the public in the face of a rapidly evolving profession facing potential changes in the delivery of legal services." </p> <p>LIT-Lab members Leigh Gill and I will be serving on the Innovations Committee of that task force, and we'll be looking for help and input from the community to help meet our charge to identify ways for the bar to:</p> <p>• Help legal service providers establish, maintain and grow sustainable practices that respond to demonstrated low and moderate income community legal needs;</p> <p><br>• Encourage exploration and use of innovative service delivery models that leverage technology, unbundling, and alternative fee structures to provide more affordable legal services; and</p> <p><br>•  Develop lawyer business management, technology, and other practice skills.</p> <p><br>Overall it should be a great session. Hope to see you there!</p> <p>--John</p>
