Yoga In The Park
Roll back
| description |
Reflect, write, yoga.
Join PDXWIT member Allison Krug and celebrate the beginning of fall by taking time to reflect, write, let go of summer, and BREATHE.
We’ll start with a brief personal writing exercise, practice a 45 minute yoga class, and end with writing a few encouraging words down and passing them off to someone in the group. We’ll leave rejuvenated, supported, and optimistic :) Bring your own mats.
*Inclement weather: we will secure an indoor venue.

We are a community-based organization with the purpose of strengthening the Portland women in tech community through educational programs, partnerships and events that provide information, connections, resources, opportunities, and a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower current women in tech and encourage others to pursue tech careers to help reduce gender imbalance in the industry and address the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. |

# Come join us for Pythonic talks!
All levels are welcome! Talk levels vary from beginner to advanced.
This month:
* *Basic Data Classification with SciPy and Sklearn** with Hailey Buckingham
> A brief walkthrough of how to invoke two of sklearn's classification algorithms. We'll train a classifier on one set of data, and use that classifier to predict the categories of a second set of data.
This will be a short talk, so there will be plenty of time for lightning talks. If you've never given a talk before, don't worry we have a [guide](http://goo.gl/GdRz9H)
Thank you Simple for providing Pizza this month!
RSVP at [Meetup](http://www.meetup.com/pdxpython/events/231472528/)
Join us on our [python.org](http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/portland) mailing list and in **#pdxpython** on Freenode. All are welcome! |

CocoaHeads Presentation Night: Product Discovery with David Hoang
Roll back

# There and back: the road of product discovery
Product strategy is evolving and becoming less clear, as is the ‘product roadmap’. Requirements, business needs and user expectations are changing at a rapid pace. This session focuses on the process and thinking of product discovery and exploration to inform your product roadmap by running multiple projects that are all connected to the problems that need to be solved.
This case study will cover:
* brainstorming and idea generation
* understanding and getting team alignment on the problem
* executing a high tempo prototyping process to develop ideas
* learning from the prototypes with real humans to get feedback in user testing
* incorporating what was learned in the product roadmap
* success stories and project examples
* dual track scrum to maintain discovery as a routine part of your process
• leading a cross-functional team of designers, engineers and product managers
## About David Hoang

Agile Finance for Agile IT:
How trends in IT pose challenges to traditional acquisition models and accounting methods and what to do about it
Thursday
August 25, 2016
10:00am PST
Recent trends in IT like mobile and cloud computing, and Internet of Things, are creating pressure on IT organizations to respond to the demands of the business in ever shrinking planning and implementation cycles. In the era of agile IT, the infrastructure is only as nimble as the least agile component and that typically is the network. The challenge of creating agile systems on legacy networks is compounded by the constraints of legacy acquisition models and accounting methods which force IT to estimate the future needs of the business in 3 to 5 year intervals. Finance should be an enabler to creating agile IT systems that deliver the most value to the organization by ensuring the network’s capability matches the immediate needs of the business without network resources sitting idle or being overly constrained due to poor planning.
Please join us for a webinar hosted by Greg Buchanan, Sr. Manager in Brocade’s office of the CFO; and David Aden, Territory Manager for Oregon and SW Washington at Brocade, to discuss how businesses can better equip Finance to help IT meet the demands of the New IP. |

Deno's Pizzeria has been a fixture in the Lake Grove neighborhood of Lake Oswego since the early 1980's and has been locally owned and operated by Kathleen Valentine since 1997.
The warm friendly atmosphere attracts families and employees living and working in the area.
Pizzerias are highly recognized for their very special pizza crust. The food is always fresh, with dough and sauce prepared daily from Deno's own distinctive recipes. And don't forget the Caesar salads topped with Deno's famous Caesar dressing (Also, available for purchase by the bottle).
The menu is packed with traditional and specialty pizzas. The BBQ Chicken, Spinach Popeye, Alfredo Combo and Hombre with Chicken or Beef are just a few of our customers' favorite specialty pizzas. Of course, our pepperoni and combination pizzas are among the traditional favorites. |

Presenter: Dave Shanley Co-Founder, CEO, Notion
Data changes the conversation. Good teams can become great teams. Dave wants all teams to have the tools they need for making the best decisions. Dave brings his experience growing a company from his apartment through acquisition to IPO (CrowdCompass, acquired by Cvent, NYSE:CVT) and years building technology for the Fortune 500 (Syclo, acquired by SAP). LAS GNOME is the first U.S. based conference for GNOME, the free software desktop. This conference focuses on the Linux application story bringing in people from all across the Linux eco-system to build a powerful platform to design applications for the Web and Linux platform on all devices.
This conference for you if you want to learn how to write ubiquitous apps that will work on any Linux distribution, contribute to a new application distribution model that puts control back on the developer instead of the OSV, and finally improve the general tooling on the Linux platform with the kind of tools that you would find on OSX and Windows.
Registration is free, although we ask for a reasonable donation. We have some amazing and well known speakers including Matthew Garrett , Alexander Larsson, creator of Flatpak, and Matt Dalio, CEO of Endless.
Bring your Linux applications and we will help you flatpak them so they run anywhere!
Help us expand the market for Linux applications, and build the kind of eco-system that will support entrepreneurs build new products based on Linux platform. |

Elixir Games PDX - Plenty of Blame to go Around
Roll back

We've looked at Supervision trees in the past, but we've often glossed over how to best use them to your advantage. It's quite easy to accidentally use these fault-tolerance primitives to, somewhat ironically, make your applications less fault-tolerant. This month we'll take a look at design and implementation practices to help make sure you're using these incredible tools to your best advantage.
For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike.
If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches.
Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns.
If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them.
Food and drinks will be provided.
Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go.

Special thanks to my friend Jeff Weiss and Puppet, ‘the leader in IT automation’, for hosting us. |
