create Calagator::Event 1250471083 The Starfih Throwers - Everything Big Starts Small Roll back

description nil Worlds apart, a five-star chef, a twelve year-old girl, and a retired schoolteacher discover how their individual efforts to feed the poor ignite a movement in the fight against hunger. This documentary tells tale of these remarkable individuals and the unexpected challenges they face. Despite being constantly reminded that hunger is far too big for one person to solve, they persevere and see their impact ripple further than their individual actions. Award-winning chef Narayanan Krishnan, fighting against the caste system in India, quits his job to begin a life of cooking and hand-delivering fresh meals to hundreds of people in his hometown. Katie Stagliano’s planting of a single cabbage seedling when she was nine years old blossoms into Katie’s Krops, a nonprofit with 73 gardens dedicated to ending hunger. Retired middle school teacher Mr. Law battles personal health issues as he hand delivers more than a thousand sandwiches nightly to the hungry in Minneapolis. This documentary tells the tale of these remarkable individuals and the challenges they face when upholding their values and forging their own path of service to others. Think of Coffee w/ Co-Founders as your own personal support group for business owners. We're all here to help!

description nil RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-seasoned-women-in-tech-tickets-29213800263 Are you a woman with 25 or more years of experience working in technology? Are you interested in an affinity group for women like you? Have you noticed that it can be difficult to find women in tech who are still in there swinging? PDXWIT is partnering with Jean Richardson to create a group for women like you. In defiance of the infographics that show we disappear after age 50, we will be coming together at Apex Clearing to build and strengthen connections and face forward to the future we want. PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

In March 2016, the program AlphaGo, developed by DeepMind, surprised the research community by defeating the legendary Go professional, Lee Sedol, in a five game match. This achievement was made possible by the integration of several recent AI technologies and a high-performance computing infrastructure. In this talk, I will paint a picture of the main developments leading to AlphaGo and how those developments can have a reach beyond the game of Go. *Alan Fern is a Professor of Computer Science and Associate Head of Research for the School of EECS at Oregon State University. He received his Ph.D (2004) and M.S (2000) in Computer Engineering from Purdue University under the direction of Robert Givan, and his B.S (1997) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine. His research interests span a range of topics in artificial intelligence, including machine learning and automated planning, with a particular interest in work falling at their intersection. He is also interested in applications of AI, including AI for real-time strategy games, security, robotics, public policy, and activity recognition from video of American football and other sports. Fern is a recipient of a National Science Foundation Early CAREER Award, has won a number of best paper awards in top AI venues, and is associate editor for the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, Machine Learning Journal, and the Artificial Intelligence Journal. He is also interested in applications of AI, including AI for real-time strategy games, robotics, public policy, and activity recognition from video of American football and other sports.* ##Details **• Doors will open at 5:30 for a 30-minute networking happy half-hour!** The food, beer and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic. **• The presentation will begin right at 6p.** **• NOTE: after the event**, everyone is invited to continue networking at a special happy hour opportunity, one story up at Portland City Grill. › Stay tuned for the latest developments and updates on this and upcoming events by joining our Meetup group, **New Relic FutureTalks PDX** (link above), and following us on Twitter **@newrelic**. description **› Please RSVP via our Meetup group [HERE](https://www.meetup.com/New-Relic-FutureTalks-PDX/events/235371556/)** #AI is comping! Are you ready? The story of “Self-Driving Datacenter” There is no doubt that Machine Learning finds space in every home today, but what do we know about it and how to apply? During this presentation I will cover: +What do we think ML is vs what it is really? +Why ML is the right solution using IT operations as an example? +How do you build a “self-driving datacenter” using the open tools near you? +Where do we go next? *Sergey Razin is the CTO, Ph.D. in CompSci, engineer by nature, and very passionate about technology. He is a founding member and contributor to a number of successful open source projects in the area of machine learning, semantics, and signal processing, including Sphinx, Boost STL, Asterisk, Pidgin, and Mahout. Sergey has over 15 years of experience in the area of analytics and machine learning where he pioneered application of such in the areas of IT security, media and speech recognition with 10 innovation disclosures in data science, signal processing, speech technologies, and communication protocols. For the past several years Sergey concentrated on applying machine learning to revolutionize IT operations in emerging areas of cloud, virtualization, distributed systems, and software defined datacenter.* #How Did Artificial Intelligence Win at Go and So What? Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems have achieved a number of high-profile victories over top humans in a variety of competitions, including Chess (Deep Blue) and Jeopardy (Watson). In contrast, until recently, the ancient game of Go remained an elusive challenge for AI, with many researchers believing that victories over top humans would be decades away. He received his Ph.D (2004) and M.S (2000) in Computer Engineering from Purdue University under the direction of Robert Givan, and his B.S (1997) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine. Did you know November 29th is Giving Tuesday?! There's not better way to spend it than with your two favorite non-profits! While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 with the goal of sharing important announcements and showcasing women in our community who are doing great things! create Calagator::Event 1250471068 CAT BarCamp Roll back

description nil BarCamps are free unconferences where the people who show up on the day of the conference decide what the conference is about. It has been shown time and time again to produce some of the best material available. The spontaneity of the entire event stands in stark contrast to the more planned conferences you may have been to. Essentially the entire conference is a hallway track, and many people feel it’s the best quality of BarCamps! The CAT at PSU is an ops training organization that has secured the venue and is organizing the event. We expect many job-hungry students skilled in development, computer science, operations, and everything else to be in attendance at this event and we want to enable as many connections as possible. Although registration is not required please RSVP at http://goo.gl/VlNKcU so that our organizers can plan accordingly.

create Calagator::Event 1250471062 November PMI Agile Roundtable - Effective Conflict Engagement with Jean Richardson Roll back

description nil Agile teams are all about high bandwidth cross-functional communication. But, we can get really jumpy about conflict. Creative conflict is where the good stuff is in product development and innovation. In her travels Jean has had the opportunity to observe a large number of teams work together—and attempt to work together. It’s clear that conversations change, the way the team moves together changes, and quality of work changes as the teams consciousness is raised. Many agile practices serve to support the goal of consciousness raising. Through observation, research, and experimentation, Jean has developed a working definition of team consciousness which will be a useful tool for you as you lead agile projects. Come learn about how effective conflict engagement deepens consciousness and what we mean when we talk about consciousness and software development. Jean’s style is dialogic, so expect to interact! About Jean Richardson Jean Richardson is principal consultant and founder of Azure Gate Consulting. Through more than 25 years of experience in software development she consulted in project management, writing, training, public speaking, and business analysis, and the last five years as an Agile coach helping leaders transform organizations. As a businessperson, she has learned that basic human issues are at the root of most business problems and most customer/vendor, employer/employee, or client/consultant disputes. Jean believes that if we ignore this fact we dehumanize ourselves and imperil our society. As a consultant, her client list boasts a wide range of businesses including ADP, Cambia Health Systems, Chrome Systems, Dealertrack, Intel, Daimler/Chrysler, Kaiser Permanente, Mentor Graphics, Oregon State Department of Human Services, Portland General Electric, The Regence Group, US Bank, and UTi. Jean’s background includes thirteen years’ experience as a court-based mediator, and she brings a strong orientation to her practice as healing work. She has taught at Oregon Graduate Institute, Portland State University, and at Marylhurst University where she taught MBA students. She teaches “Collaboration for Cross Functional Teams,” “Facilitative Leadership,” and “Effective Conflict Engagement” for private clients. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and professional development events.

create Calagator::Event 1250471061 Strata: Portraits of Humanity features Roman lead coffin and Maya rain ceremony Roll back

description nil See the detailed examination of a Roman coffin burial in England and witness a real Maya rain ceremony in the October 2016 edition of Strata: Portraits of Humanity, available online and on TV: (1) Metal detectorists discover a lead coffin in a field near Ilchester in Somerset, England. The local police call in the archaeologists. They take the coffin back to the South West Heritage Trust Laboratory, where they open and excavate the coffin and discover a young woman’s skeleton. (2) Paul Hixon participated as a student in an ethnobotany field school in the Yucatan, Mexico, at the village and ancient Maya site of Yaxunah. His film covers the Ch’a Chaak ceremony, which appeals to the Maya god Chaak to bring rain for the recently planted corn. Unlike any other show available anywhere, Strata is a fresh monthly showcase for unique, captivating and diverse stories about our cultural heritage from an archaeological perspective. We have a video promo for the show at https://youtu.be/xYSS2kUCsFE. Check it out! You can see this monthly half-hour show on our nonprofit streaming-media Web site, The Archaeology Channel as well as on cable TV in cities across the US and even in Serbia. Strata program details can be found at http://www.archaeologychannel.org/video-guide/strata-portraits-of-humanity. The growing list of cable TV stations carrying the show is available at. They include placement in the local on-demand menu of Comcast Cable in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California. This and other programs are available on TAC for your use and enjoyment. We urge you to support this public service by participating in our Membership and Underwriting programs. Only with your help can we continue and enhance our nonprofit public-education and visitor-supported programming. We also welcome new content partners as we reach out to the world community.

create Calagator::Event 1250471060 Emotional Intelligence in Design Roll back

description nil Data and good intentions are no longer enough in a world where the lines are increasingly blurred between online and offline experiences. People need products that support the broad spectrum of human experience. By practicing awareness we can create designs that help people do what they need to do, even when life is hard.
Our Presenter, Beth Dean
Beth is an illustrator and designer in San Francisco. She currently works at Facebook on transparency in advertising and dabbles in LGBTQ policy advocacy. When she’s not drawing or at a computer she can be found on a mountain peak. She’s led design and product for analytics and news startups, and worked with big brands like Hotwire, Progressive Insurance and American Greetings. In addition to her own books, her comics have been featured in SPIN, various anthologies, and galleries around the country. She’s spoken around the world about emotional intelligence in design, and queer identity in comics, at places like: San Diego Comic-Con, Stumptown Comics Fest, Alternative Press Expo, From the Front, Industry, and more. She’s been interviewed on NPR’s Marketplace, and recently served as a White House LGBTQ Tech Innovation Fellow. Follow Beth on Twitter and at her personal site.
