Women + Tech Third Annual Summer Soirée
Roll back
| description |
**Please RSVP on Eventbrite**
Join us for our third annual summer soiree in partnership with Women Who Code, Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, PyLadies PDX, Girls Inc. hosted by Cambia!
Portland often prides itself on being inclusive, and the tech scene is no exception. We think of ourselves as being the welcoming tech city and congratulate ourselves for our diversity pledges. We read stories and articles on our feeds depicting the inequities — and sometimes monstrosities — our neighbors to the south, in Silicon Valley, face. We feel thankful those thingsdon’t happen here. Unfortunately, those things *do* happen here, often in the shadows, but those involved don’t know whom to tell or where to go.
At this year’s summer soiree, our theme is dedicated to openly discussing how we can change the Portland tech culture to be more inclusive, moving away from the bro-culture, and discussing how this community and our allies can work together to make the Portland tech scene a more welcoming place for all. Our conversation starter is “Which label is the least helpful in tech? (e.g. bro-grammer, lady-boss, man-splainer, etc...).”
Event Agenda:
5:30pm - Doors open
6:15pm - Introductions
6:30pm - Panel begins
7:30pm - Networking
The summer soiree is a mixture of networking and speaking segments, and we will be joined by a diverse group of panelists who will share their stories and insights, leaving us with ideas and next steps to strive for the change we desire:
• Moderator: Terra Soma, Senior Organizational Development and Change Consultant at Legacy Health
• Lori DeLone, CIO Health Plans at Cambia
• Ryan Carson, CEO Treehouse
• Deena Pierott, Founder iUrbanTeen and Black Women in Tech Advisory Board member
• Katharine Nester, Chief Product and Technology Office Ruby Receptionists
During the event, we’ll have an Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.

<p>JavaScript is the language of the browser. Every website you’ve ever used is built with JavaScript, with interaction powered by the popular jQuery library. Even Stanford’s intro to Computer Science course now uses JavaScript as its teaching language. Learn how to use JavaScript and jQuery and build a simple web app in this workshop. Together we’ll learn key jQuery concepts like manipulating the DOM and using event listeners to update our app in real time. See an example before you come: this web app was made by an attendee at one of last events!</p> <p>Before you come:<br>Experience with HTML/CSS is ideal.<br>Be sure to bring a laptop. How to Develop a High Impact Startup
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Before investing your life savings, asking friends and family for investment or leaving an existing job, there are things every entrepreneur should know about the road ahead. At The Bridge we work with new entrepreneurs every day. This 4-hour workshop reflects what we have learned about the risks and rewards of entrepreneurship and offers practical guidance on how to start a high impact business.
At The Bridge we focus on scalable and high impact businesses as opposed to “Main Street” small businesses. There is often, but not always, a strong element of technological innovation in these businesses. This might involve software development, engineering or even food science. Scalable businesses generally have more significant investment requirements and nationally, if not globally directed strategies.
In this entrepreneurial workshop participants will learn about:
Financing Options – We will outline known and conventional funding sources for Entrepreneurs as well as discuss bootstrapping a startup without any outside funding
The Stages of a startup and what to expect at each stage
IDEA > CONCEPT > COMMIT > VALIDATION > SCALE > ESTABLISHING
Business Model Canvas – This useful framework is a foundational tool for early stage founders to effectively map out all the areas required to make a business successful
This workshop is put on in cooperation with WorkSource and The Bridge. There is a fee of $495 per attendee, but based on eligibility Worksource is offering full scholarships to qualified individuals.
Please contact Doreen Englemann at WorkSource WA for details at [email protected] or 360-735-4960.

PDXWIT Purpose:
<br>PDXWIT Westside Happy Hour is a satellite event series launched in mid-2017 to serve the tech community in/near the West Hills, SW Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, and Tualatin. It will become quarterly beginning with the December 2017 gathering.
<br>PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
<br>Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. |

Join Andrew Ferlitsch and Ernest Bonat, Ph.D., from the Portland Data Science Group for an introduction into Machine Learning fundamentals. Mostly focused on the concepts, this workshop will be intermixed with some Python programming examples. We will cover Artificial Neural Network (ANN) using scikit-learn Machine Learning framework. All skill levels welcome; you just need to bring a Windows or Mac laptop. Follow the Python Laptop Setup document for Data Science projects development.

Make Less Mistakes with Design Sprint
Roll back
| description |

Building startups involves taking a lot of risks. It requires one to walk on a road less traveled and hence success or failure is always a probabilistic event. No one can be really sure to predict the future but what entrepreneurs can do best is to mitigate the risk.
Follow best practices, things that have worked for others in the past and apply it to your idea (Of course with customization)
Design Sprint is one such practice. Incepted at Google Ventures, DS involves a series of steps that help inculcate design thinking into any idea. It helps to evolve the company vision to looking at any product from engineering stand point to user experience stand point. A design Sprint can be applied to any product at 3 stages
- While building a new product from scratch
- While upgrading to a new version of an existing product
- While adding new features to an existing product The session will be a quick starter on Design Sprints. Given limited time, we will be touch mostly on understanding of the concept, how it can be applied to any product and the best practices.
Rather than a monologue, I will be putting some exercises to create more engagement. Post session, we can do few one on one meetings and take Q&A.
Session leader Ayush Jain is a serial entrepreneur and founder of Mindbowser and 4wardtech- 2 technology consulting companies working in areas of product development, research and building successful startups. Ayush also is the chapter director of StartupGrind Pune and editor of online magazines- theiotmagazine.com and chatbotsjournal.com
In all these works, Ayush is primarily involved as the strategy and user experience guy. He has been running Design Sprints since last 2 years for startups and is a self taught Design guy. A skill he learnt because he believe it is the biggest differentiation and competitive advantage for products. He has been involved in creation of apps such has White and Yellow pages and Smiling Mind, both hitting 1M+ downloads mark.
