Portland's Transportation Future: Business Stepping Up To The Challenge
Roll back

On January 30, BBPDX members and the general public can attend our first policy event of 2018 with regional leaders like Multnomah County Commissioner Jessica Vega Pederson, Portland Bureau of Transportation's Director Leah Treat, former Washington Secretary of Transportation Lynn Peterson, and ZGF Architects’ Nolan Lienhart. During the panel moderated by Oregon Humanities’ director Adam Davis, we’ll explore why it’s critical for businesses to engage in our region’s transportation challenges and how BBPDX members can make a difference.
Over the past year, we’ve traveled with delegations of Portlanders to Los Angeles and Denver to learn about how diverse stakeholder groups collaborated to secure voter support for multi-billion dollar investments in regional transit and congestion relief. We learned about inspiring partnerships like the one from the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce that invited in regional environmentalists to work in the Chamber office on a shared vision.
Additionally, at both the state and local levels, agencies are considering various approaches to address our clogged roadways including congestion pricing. Our member Luke Kanies wrote about this approach last year in the Portland Tribune.
Big challenges call for bold visions and solutions oriented collaborations. We look forward to seeing you on January 30 and exploring how we can work together to create a more efficient and equitable transportation system for Portland. |

Join your fellow Portland Lovers of data for a morning of data education and networking at our usual 3rd Thursday (February 15th) chapter meeting at the Standard Insurance classrooms in downtown Portland. Mark Wheeler from PSU will talk about Business Applications of Blockchain Technology.
Attendance is free for DAMA Members and Employees of <a href="https://damapdx.wordpress.com/about-damapdx/corporate-members/%22">Corporate Members</a>. <br> Students $5 with ID; $15 others. <br>You can walk in; we appreciate your <a href="https://damapdx.wordpress.com/2018/01/05/february-2018-business-applications-of-blockchain-technology/">registering</a> so we order enough refreshments.
<h3>Overview - Business Applications of Blockchain Technology </h3>
Presented by Mark Wheeler, Portland State University
Blockchain technology is being talked about as one of the next big innovations to take hold across multiple industries. Businesses who focus on transactions, contracts, and assets management are just a few of the initial sectors of the economy which will be disrupted. As the underlying technology begins to take hold, time-consuming and labor-intensive functions will be replaced by automated and “always on” smart processes. Centralized models of trust and authenticity will be replaced by decentralized services and crowd-based consensus algorithms.
There will not be one blockchain but millions, each built on an application-specific architectures. Any store of information that requires exchange or validation across indirectly related entities will reside on a blockchain. Blockchains are safe, secure, and immutable — but all blockchains are not created equal. We will explore the subject by examining several current generations of blockchain implementations.
<u>Topics during this session include:</u>
<ul>
<li>
Architecture, Protocols, Algorithms
</li>
<li>
Distributed Ledgers, Smart Contracts
</li>
<li>
Trust / Consensus Systems
</li>
<li>
Decentralization, Virtual Computing Environment
</li>
</ul>
<h3>Speaker</h3>

Starting up a venture can be filled with big questions we have trouble answering well. This is especially true when it comes to your finances and accounting.
This event will bring local experts who can help you get a clear perspective accounting choices and structures.
We plan to go over some very basic concepts as groundwork that can set a solid foundation. Things like;
• Basic accounting terms (asset, liability, revenue, Cost of goods sold, Operating Expenses, Gross profit, net profit, fixed expense, variable expense) • Basic accounting principles (measurement, matching, recognition, etc.)
• Balance sheet & Income statements (can’t fly without knowing what the instruments are saying)
• Cash-flow planning & budgeting.
• Profitability vs. solvency. The first doesn’t always mean the second.
• Capital requirements (equip, raw material, inventory, etc.)
• Cash-to-cash cycle
We also plan to do some hands-on exercises in Excel. So bring your laptops and get ready to get your fingers dirty in some exciting accounting. Ok, maybe that's a stretch but, it learning your way around these core principles and more and make a night and day difference in your Startup. That! is fun!
So come out an join us! You won't regret a minute of it!
This event is free to Bridge Members. $10 for all others. We will serve light refreshments and snacks. |

The words we use matter, and we at PDXWIT have decided to be more intentional about our use of language to ensure everyone feels included and safe. Join us on this journey at Viewpoint where we dedicate the event to Inclusive Language. Our topic of conversation will start with the question “how can language be more inclusive in your work environment?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase women in our community.
Introduction to Viewpoint, including what they do and what job opportunities are available.
Pamela Cournoyer, Executive Leadership Coach at Powerful & True, Leadership Mastery will talk to us about getting along at work to create an inclusive culture.
Paige Berry, Software Engineer at New Relic will tell us the The Practice of Positivity: how to be open-minded, thoughtful and caring.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table Topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and those hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends

How, and When, to do TDD and BDD Together
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
For a long time, folks (Rob included) misinterpreted Behavior Driven Development (BDD) as “Test-Driven Development done right,” as Acceptance Test Driven Development (ATDD) with better tools, or as an umbrella term embracing both TDD and ATDD. So, how is BDD really done, and where does TDD fit in, if at all? It turns out that the real problem may lie in trying to pin down rigorous definitions for these terms, and trying to determine when to do which style of testing. Rob coaches teams to be prepared to use the BDD cycle and the TDD cycle when appropriate, and to be willing to move fluidly between these two intertwined cycles on a daily basis. Rob has witnessed significantly improved levels of communication, alignment, quality, and enthusiasm on teams -- and just in mere days, when BDD is embraced as the central activity of the whole team.
You’ll help explore why, when, and how to use both TDD and BDD together to build the most valuable and maintainable software possible.
Rob Myers is principle instructor and coach at Agile for All. He has over 30 years of professional experience with software development teams, and has been training and coaching organizations in Agile engineering practices since 1998. His courses blend fun, practical hands-on labs, "Training From the Back of the Room” learning techniques, and relevant first-person stories from both successful and not-so-successful Agile implementations. His clients have included many start-ups as well as Fortune 100 multinationals. Rob is currently working on his first technical book, Essential Test-Driven Development. |

Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar led by an Engineering Leader at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 20. Never fear: we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this workshop!
Agenda:
5:00 PM: Doors open
5:15 PM: Introduction
5:30 PM: Workshop begins
6:30 PM: Workshop ends

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

Clojure Lightning Talks
Roll back

This month we'll have member provided lighting talks. We have two scheduled so far and room for more. Get in touch if you want to do one also.
First we have John Skilbeck talking about converting a traditional Clojure project meant to be run on a server or on docker into a AWS Lambda runtime, while leaving the original project's source code intact. He'll provide a brief background on AWS Lambda and how that works, and then a walkthrough of the project.
---
Then we'll have JR Heard's talk: An Introduction to Specter
Specter is a library that allows you to elegantly and performantly manipulate Clojure/Script data structures. In this sure-to-be-compelling lightning talk, we'll learn why Specter exists, how to use it, and how to write our own Specter "navigators". |
