<p>Hack2Learn: Hackers, Assemble! (Part 2)</p> <p>Hack2Learn is a bi-monthly CTF (capture the flag) meetup hosted at PASCAL in Portland, OR. PASCAL is an organization of equal opportunity hackers, and we will be introducing you to all the various types of challenges that you might face at any level, and at any time in the fields of information security and technology as a whole, for fun or profit.<br>Hacker/Tech culture and community can sometimes be a bit (or a byte ^_^) off-putting, especially to those trying to figure out what exactly it is, what we are and what we do. During this meetup at PASCAL, we welcome n00bs with open arms! Never competed in a CTF challenge before? Never even heard of CTFs? Do you have a strong desire to learn & teach alongside peers? GOOD!! You will fit right in at Hack2Learn!</p> <p>For the next Hack2Learn workshop (yes, we are finally getting this event rolling again!), we will be taking a crack at Assembly-focused CTF (Capture The Flag) challenges: specifically, the PICOCTF2018<br>Assembly 0-2. MrDe4d will be walking everyone through these challenges, step by step (pun!) so that everyone in attendance will gain theoretical as well as applicable knowledge.<br>Being able to gain control of system memory is a powerful skill, and is a gateway to understanding memory structure, how data is accessed and processed, how the OS, CPU and programs interface with one another and ultimately how to pwn. A lot of people find Assembly intimidating..and while it may seem daunting and complicated at first glance but, as with any programming language, a grasp of logic as well as dedication to learning are all that are required. In addition to walking you through every step in each challenge, a relatively quick<br>intro to Assembly will be given, hopefully demystifying it a bit for everyone. MrDe4d will cover basic syntax, instructions and conditions. As we dive deeper into each aspect of the challenges, we will continue to reiterate what has been covered with Assembly- we expect questions to be frequent and recurring. It is absolutely OK to ask the same thing more than once; PASCAL Hack2Learn is a friendly learning environment!<br>H2L has two major goals: for everyone to capture the flags, and to learn to reverse engineer. This is not a workshop focused on learning a tool, rather it is designed to get attendees thinking logically, critically & to get everyone accustomed to being uncomfortable and not knowing the answer.<br>In order to participate, attendees will need a computer running either Linux (distro of choice though for this workshop Debian flavors are recommended) or Windows with a VM for Linux, & an install of Cutter 1.7.2 (a Radare2 GUI).</p> <p>Note: Running Linux is not absolutely necessary when using Cutter. Both Windows and Mac are suitable and Cutter will run fine. Cutter still definitely has a learning curve to it.. fortunately, there is an excellent tutorial/intro on Megabeets.net!</p> <p>Questions? <p>PASCAL Hackerspace is happy to announce a new bimonthly workshop! One of the core goals of our organization is to provide educational opportunities to people in the information security and technical communities of Portland, and with AlgoBytes we get to do exactly that!</p> <p>AlgoBytes is an informal workshop series to learn a bit more about the formal foundations of the field of computer science and about core data structures/algorithms frequently used for interviews, whether you've never explored them before or need a refresher.</p> <p>Each 90 minute session we will focus on a different topic, although we may repeat them if there are requests to revisit material. Currently there will be 20-30 minutes of presentation, a walk through of a problem, followed by breaking into small groups to practice. Attending sequential events is probably helpful if the material is new to you, but not required.</p> <p>First Session's Theme: Analysis Foundations</p> <p>What is an algorithm, besides a scary word?<br>I'm a practical person, why do I care?<br>What is a data structure?<br>What is complexity analysis?<br>What is Big O? Big Theta? Description
csv,conf,v4 is a community driven data conference. Its an event thats not literally about CSV file format, but rather about what CSV represents in regards to our wider community ideals (data interoperability, hackability, simplicity, etc.).
Keeping with previous csv conferences, we have put together a heavily curated program that maintains an unconference feel. This will include quick, rapid fire, 20-minute presentations hand selected by the program committee. Talks will be about a range of data-related topics from a diverse range of speakers. Our focus this year is connecting key areas of open science, data journalism, and open government with the wider data software/tools community.
Propose a Talk (due Feb 9, 2019)
Registration Fees. We are a non-profit, community-run conference. Ticket sales pay for catering/venue costs and travel support for speakers/attendees. While csv,conf prides itself on hosting all that are interested, we appreciate registrants choosing the highest teir you or your institution can afford. Honor system. Note: All fees are charged in US dollars.

A hiring manager at any given tech company in Portland receives hundreds of applications for an open position in Sales, Marketing, Operations, or Administration. More than half of the received applications are discarded immediately, or soon after, due to simple (and preventable!) mistakes that applicants routinely make. During this presentation we’ll cover the 9 most common mistakes applicants make on their cover letters, resumes, email responses, phone screens, and in-person interviews that disqualify them from the applicant pool. A successful job application means successfully marketing and selling yourself to the company—and in this presentation marketer Carly J. Cais shows you how to jump through each job application hoop successfully. Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

<p>This week we dove head first into conditionals. This should feel like a natural progression from the logical operators we had been using before. We are going to try a new format this week where we will do a short recap followed by group collaboration where we will be doing select problems from the problem set. We will use these to drive our discussion of the weeks topics.</p> <p>This means you do not have to kill yourself to complete the problem sets prior although I encourage you to do so. If you get stumped please feel free to suggest it as one of the problems you would like to go over during our session.</p> <p>A lot of times there is parking right in front of the building. If this is not the case I recommend trying 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Ave. There are usually spots down that way. Parking isn't free until after 7pm so don't forget to pay! There is also a lot right next door if you don't want to mess with street parking.</p> <p>As always feel free to message me or post on Slack if you have any questions. In January, IDEO.org and +Acumen will once again be offering their highly regarded free 9-week online course, Design Kit: Course for Human-Centered Design. As we've done often in the past, Portland Community Design Thinkers will be hosting a special meetup on Jan. 16 to help facilitate the creation of teams for all members who wish to join the course.
Created by IDEO.org for those who are relatively new to design thinking, +Acumen's free Design Kit: Course for Human-Centered Design is probably one of the best and most immersive resources anywhere for getting up to speed on the nuts and bolts of HCD. This meetup is specifically for those interested in learning more about the course and helping to form working teams. Please note PCDT is *not* managing this course -- you'll be on your own for that. But we're keen to give anyone interested a leg up in getting off to the best possible start with a group of other eager local participants, and participants are welcome to use our own Slack channel for course communication and organizing, as many groups have previously done.

In brief, it's a nine-week online FREE curriculum that will introduce participants to the concepts of human-centered design and how this approach can be used to create innovative, effective, and sustainable solutions.
During those nine weeks, you'll work online (and off) with a group of 2-6 people, learning the HCD process by applying it to one of three pre-crafted real world design challenges. (You'll also have a choice to craft your own challenge.) Each week you will explore the fundamental concepts through readings, case studies, and short videos. Then you'll meet in-person with your design team to get your hands dirty practicing the relevant human-centered design methods.

One thing that became abundantly clear in 2018 is that our relationships with our phones, and digital technologies in general, began to seem less like a partnership and more like an indentured servitude.
The zeitgeist last year was saturated with terms like “digital attention crisis,” “distraction addiction,” “mindful tech,” ethical technology,” and “time well spent.” When, in August, Facebook and Instagram introduced a new dashboard to tell us how long we’ve spent inside their apps, they were responding to a groundswell of concern that these apps are hijacking our attention in ways that are not aligned with users’ best interests but, rather, mainly with the interests of advertisers. “Engagement,” the chief currency of Silicon Valley since the first personalized ad appeared, has become inextricably linked with the hidden design practices that prioritize user time on platform above all other considerations. As a result, we’ve all begun to feel the pinch of “the cost of free.”
In 2018 some of us started pushing back. People like former Google Design Ethicist Tristan Harris and groups like the Center for Humane Technology sought to make our digital tools more human-centered, more accountable and maybe a little less less powerful -- and their views flipped from fringe to the mainstream in what has been called a “techlash.”
On January 29, we’ll gather for a hands-on look at how design is at the heart of this issue: the bottomless newsfeeds, the limited menu choices, the proliferating Autoplay function, notifications set to “ON” by default, and all the intermittent variable rewards that turn our phones into slot machines with dopamine payouts.
We’ll examine our own relationships to our devices and the apps we can’t stop looking at. And we’ll explore what a truly human-centered digital ecosystem could look like.
PCDT organizer Patrick Sharbaugh will be joined by Dr. Dan Rubin, a Portland clinical psychologist who specializes in mindfulness-based psychotherapy and is an adjunct professor of psychology of Maitripa College, where he teaches courses on the intersection of psychology and Buddhism. Dan and Patrick are both active members of the Community for Humane Technology, the outreach arm of the Center for Humane Technology whose aim is to align technology to humanity's best interests.
