Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar led by an engineering leader at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 40. Never fear: we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this session!
Agenda:
5:00 p.m. - Doors open
5:15 p.m. - Introduction
5:30 p.m. - Session begins
6:30 p.m. - Session ends

Join us for happy hour at AltSource on September 17th.
In the tech industry, companies often tout all the “fun” benefits they offer to employees, but do those perks really matter to everyone? Yes, ping pong can be entertaining for a few minutes, and kombucha is great for your gut, but are these the types of benefits that make workspaces desirable for everyone? Let’s talk about it! This month’s theme will be: “Functional workspaces: from behavior to the needs of parents,” and to help get the networking flowing we will be using the conversation prompt: What’s something you need to make your workspace functional?
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 p.m. to share important announcements and showcase three members of our community.
A representative from our host company AltSource will share what they do and what job opportunities are available at the company
Kristy LaFollette, Healthy Workplace Advocate at Health Equity Partners, will give the following lightning talk: Beyond Beer and Corn Hole: Workplace Change for Families
Torri Wright, Founder and CEO at Wright Behavior, will talk about Decoding The Language of Behavior
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table Topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and those hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 pm - Doors open
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 pm - Event ends

AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Downtown Pub Lunch: Promoting honesty and public discourse within companies
Roll back

<p>As agile practitioners our role is to encourage individuals and organizations to practice the values of transparency and communication. In our journeys we may find that honesty, integrity and transparency are easier to do through conversations with individuals rather than open dialogue across organizational units. We need to find tools and techniques to live into these values and inspire leaders on how to manifest honesty and openness in every conversation not just the individual ones.</p> <p>Come together and discuss this topic with us at Ringlers Pub on Friday the 2nd of August. We want to know your experience. We want to learn from each other and build our community of practice. We want a chance to discover what we have not seen or gain a new perspective.</p> <p>You can find us in the back under the Crystal Ballroom, ask for the Agile PDX group and you will find us over yummy food and drinks.</p> <p>Events are made possible by the AgilePDX community and our sponsors, including platinum sponsor ProFocus Technology (<a href="https://www.profocustechnology.com/" class="linkified">https://www.profocustechnology.com/</a>). Learn more about our sponsors at <a href="https://agilepdx.org/sponsorship" class="linkified">https://agilepdx.org/sponsorship</a>.</p> <p>** Additional Information: **<br>Q: Is the space ADA accessible?<br>A: Yes, McMenamins Ringlers Pub is ADA accessible. Please note, doors are manual but the staff is available to assist should you require assistance.</p> <p>Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?<br>A: McMenamins Ringlers Pub restrooms are designated Men and Women. There are no unisex/family/gender neutral restrooms at this location.</p> <p>Q: Will there be food and drinks at this event?<br>A: Food & Drink (including alcohol) is available to purchase, and we have table service. Standard pub fare & pub prices. Menu link: <a href="https://d2660z551umiy9.cloudfront.net/files/menus/Crystal/RPmenu.pdf" class="linkified">https://d2660z551umiy9.cloudfront.net/files/menus/Crystal/RPmenu.pdf</a></p> <p>Q: What is the easiest way to get to the venue?<br>A: Parking downtown is limited, so we recommend public transportation or a ride-share option, or another personal transportation (bicycle, etc). For public transportation options, please visit <a href="https://trimet.org/" class="linkified">https://trimet.org/</a> to plan your trip to Ringlers at 1332 W Burnside Street in Downtown Portland.</p> <p>Q: How do I enter the building?<br>A: We are in the side room under the Crystal Ballroom. You can use the entrance on the corner of Burnside & 14th. Let yourself in, and find us at the large table.</p> |

PDX Web & Design: Killing The Angle Bracket
Roll back

<p>Sooner or later we all have to work with HTML, despite its verbosity. Those of us who claim to love HTML may just be victims of Stockholm Syndrome, both praising yet secretly loathing it.</p>
<p>Basho designer John Newman is making the trek from the swamps of Florida to show us the way. In the modern world of markup preprocessors, these alternative syntaxes allow you to write simpler, cleaner, more concise code in a shorter amount of time. Certain techniques can even allow your team members who may be less-tech-savvy to contribute content directly without forcing you to wire up a WYSIWYG style CMS.</p>
<p>This talk explores great alternatives to plain HTML and CSS, and covers how Basho put these tools together to facilitate a painless, team-oriented approach to building sites and web apps.</p>
<p>Vitamin T will be feeding us pizza and recruiting for several local positions; Webtrends will give us space; and Basho is providing John.</p> |

Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Intro to Small Basic: A Free Coding Class at The Tech Academy
Roll back
| description |
<p>We run a code school. We hear from a lot of people we talk to that they're not sure whether they're interested in a job in the tech field, because they don't know enough about it. Sometimes, they've even been told that "programming is hard to learn."</p> <p>At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.</p> <p>The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to Small Basic. Small Basic is a Microsoft language that gives users exposure to many of the fundamental skills used in more complex coding languages.</p> <p>This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.</p> <p>In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of these popular technologies - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.</p> <p>Please Note:<br>---Make sure to bring your laptop, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to actually write your own code. If you don't have a laptop, no worries, you will be able to use one of ours.<br>---An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we may have a few open seats for last minute attendees.</p> |

Windocks is a Seattle-area firm that supports the complete SQL Server product family, with database cloning using Windows VHDs and storage arrays. The session will focus on SQL Server containers and Kubernetes, and on how organizations are modernizing full stack dev/test, as well as how SSRS containers are applied for scalable support for AWS RDS and SQL Azure.
Presented by Ramesh Parameswaran, founder and CEO of Windocks.
**2nd Preso: Digital Ocean Cloud Controller**
docc is Digital Ocean's internal wrapper to simplify the Kubernetes experience for our engineers so they can focus on getting work done instead of the complexities of Kubernetes. It's also open source: https://github.com/digitalocean/digitalocean-cloud-controller-manager
