Portland Java User Group virtual meetup
RSVP on Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/PDXJUG/events/278107253/
This month's topic is Automated Refactoring for Java.
Abstract:
This talk will focus on how engineering teams can leverage automated refactoring tools that originated at Netflix to greatly reduce the time and effort required when migrating to new versions of frameworks like Spring and JUnit and between language versions.
Does this scenario sound familiar?
Your organization has many Java-based microservices and applications that are critical for the day-to-day operation of your business. Over time, you find that your applications have a large number of dependencies on third-party technologies and libraries that have different release cadences. Invariably, your organization encounters pressures to upgrade those dependencies for any number of the following reasons: critical bug fixes, security updates, expiring support, "modernization", or technical enablement. Refactoring a single application to update its third-party dependencies can be a tricky and manual process. At the organization level, performing the same refactoring operation across all of your applications can result in weeks of effort.
This talk introduces OpenRewrite, an open-source ecosystem that specializes in mass, automated refactoring with a focus on Java source code, Maven build files, XML, YAML, and property files. We will discuss how the framework enables the creation of composable, prepackaged recipes that can be used to automate common framework migration and how these recipes can be integrated into both Maven and Gradle builds.
This talk will include some live demonstrations of Rewrite's tools to perform automated migrations on real-world, Spring applications and libraries.
Bio:
Tyler Van Gorder is a principal software engineer at Moderne Inc where he focuses on frameworks and tools for automated refactoring. He is a committer on the OpenRewrite project and has a passion for building tools that enable developers to do their jobs more effectively. Prior to joining Moderne, Tyler worked as a lead software engineer for a large, e-commerce company where he focused on company-wide libraries using Spring, Spring Boot, and Spring Cloud. In his spare time, you might find Tyler on a basketball court or hiking, with his wife, in the mountains around Portland.

PDXWIT Presents: How to Study for a Technical Interview
Roll back

***Registration through Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_FBl4eltmTNaV2mOZ62CQ_w is required to gain entry to this virtual event***
Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition, so some engineers from Amazon Web Services (AWS) got together to create this training tailored to technical job seekers. In tech, it is hard to know what to expect or how to prepare as each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this virtual seminar we will review some interviewing practices we’ve witnessed through our careers for technical interviews and present helpful tips to prepare. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
Morning preparation, attire, and mindset
Non-technical preparation
How to study for the coding interview
How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 50.
Agenda:
11:30 p.m. - Event begins
11:33 p.m.- Intros and announcements
11:40 p.m. - Session begins
1:00 p.m. - Event ends
Mission: We are building a better tech industry by creating access, dismantling barriers and fueling belonging.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Details
High technology is known for its lack of diversity and inclusion but change is on the way - and technology may be part of the solution!
Trey Boynton, Cisco's Director of Inclusion & Collaboration Strategy & Solutions, will share the approach and vision of Cisco’s Inclusion and Collaboration strategy. Specifically, she will share how digitization across the global enterprise helps deliver outcomes in service of a diverse workforce and inclusive culture. She will anchor her talk by showing two examples of Cisco's use of technology, namely the Multiplier Effect and our Social Justice Beliefs and Actions. In addition, she’ll highlight the thought leadership behind a few of the Inclusive Solutions that deliver on Cisco’s promise to drive inclusion at scale.
Speaker: Trey Boynton has spent her professional career working to create inclusive environments. For nearly 20 years, she worked in university settings driving equity and inclusion for students, faculty, and staff at the University of Michigan.
She shifted to the tech industry in 2017 when she joined Duo Security as their first head of diversity and inclusion. As the lead for overall diversity strategy, Trey envisioned a bold road ahead for Duo and implemented company-wide programs and initiatives that positively grew Duo’s magical culture and team. Duo achieved a milestone in August 2018 when it was acquired by Cisco as a cornerstone of their software-as-a-service (SAAS) cloud security business. In her new Cisco role as the Global Lead for Inclusion Strategy & Alignment, she manages a team dedicated to building and delivering on inclusion promises and aspirations at scale.
For Trey, inclusion work is deeply personal. She describes it as head and heart work centered on creating space so that employees and teams are valued, celebrated, and able to define their own success. In short, her ultimate goal is to reduce barriers to brilliance.
Originally from her beloved northern California, she studied at Spelman College, Georgetown University, and the University of Michigan. Her most important job is helping her two teen feminist daughters continue to be awesome and giving attention to their needy dog, Toby. In the two minutes of time, she has left to spare, she fancies herself an overly hopeful San Francisco 49ers fan, a budding Lego engineer, and an expert on all things Jane Austen.

PDXWIT Presents: June Virtual Happy Hour: Intersectionality
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Zoom hhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUrc-ysrTosE9bkJOuhJWBxv6Lept2DUrN8 is required to gain entry to this virtual event***
Join us during Pride Month for a special edition Virtual Happy Hour hosted by PixelSpoke.
The event will explore intersectionality, a concept and term first explored by Kimberlé Crenshaw. Intersectionality acknowledges that while some populations share similar experiences of discrimination, harassment, sexism, inequality and oppression on the basis of their sex, race and gender, not all are equally impacted or have equal access to resources, power and privilege.
We will have lightning speakers exploring this theme. As always, we’ll have our Recruiter Roll Call and Virtual Job Seekers Lounge.
And for those of you looking to connect on camera, we will come together face-to-face (or screen-to-screen) after the presentations for a little dose of community.
We will have ASL interpretation and live closed captioning throughout. Contact [email protected] if you have other accessibility needs.
Hope to see you there!
Agenda:
12:00 p.m. - Zoom Webinar Open/Virtual Networking
12:03 p.m. - Introductions + Announcements
12:10 p.m. - Lightning Talks
12:20 p.m. - Recruiter Roll Call
12:40 p.m. - Virtual Job Seekers Section via Slack/Face-to-Face Networking
1:00 p.m. - Event ends
Purpose:
We are building a better tech industry by creating access, dismantling barriers and fueling belonging.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Facilitated by Crystal Sincoff and Hazel Valdez, this panel discussion with Denise McCarty from Autodesk, Jennifer Bantelman from Zapproved, and others will share their connections to the queer community in the past, present and future.
We will have ASL interpretation and live closed captioning throughout.

Driving Impact with Diversity-Based Opportunity Funds
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
We know that investors often look for patterns, referrals and pedigree to make the investment process efficient, safely fitting into established norms.
The unintended consequence is that brilliant founders without the right connections are often passed over. This expresses itself in many ways but often we see that LGBTQIA+, Black, Latinx, and Native American founders are largely left out of the VC ecosystem.
Today, companies are creating specific, application based, Opportunity Funds - their goals being inviting more underrepresented founders into the global ecosystem. This looks like a diverse Investment Committee that includes members from both inside and outside of the investment institution, the goal being to review at early stage investments alongside growth investments.
The result? Underestimated founders have access to direct capital.
Join StartOut Founders, Morrison & Foerster, and Bank of America/Merrill Lynch as we discuss how investors set up these kinds of funds, what current programs look like, how to maintain these funds, and how to bring investors and entrepreneurs into this ecosystem.
Moderator:
Alexa Hall, Startup Program Manager - Google Cloud

Private Surveillance
Roll back
| description |
At the last several meetings, we looked at how municipalities use surveillance technologies and how the public can have input into the acquisition and use process related to these systems.
But what about private entities? How are they using technology to surveil us? And what happens when private organizations fund surveillance tech or enter into contracts with city governments to provide surveillance services?
This month, local Portland tech journalist Kate Kaye will join us to talk about the ways companies and other private entities are surveilling the public and what that means for our privacy and government policies for tech and data use. Kate is the creator of the the City Surveillance Watch podcast, a three-part scripted series delving into the dichotomy of smart city tech and its surveillance implications. She also is one of the only journalists anywhere to track closely the saga of Portland’s city mobility tracking project with Sidewalk Labs sibling Replica and the city’s groundbreaking facial recognition ban, which outlaws private use of facial recognition.
We'll discuss ownership and sharing of the data collected and how we might get back control of what information is collected and how it's used.

PDXWIT Presents: Celebrating PRIDE!

***Registration through Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUrc-ysrTosE9bkJOuhJWBxv6Lept2DUrN8 is required to gain entry to this virtual event***
It’s PRIDE month! The usual PRIDE parade where folks line the streets and wear our glittered rainbow outfits is not happening for the 2nd year in a row, but that doesn’t mean the celebration has to be put on hold. How are you celebrating PRIDE this month?
Join us as we meet with Queer leaders in tech spaces, creating connections to talk about what they’re doing to celebrate and connect with the community at-large. From driveway dinners to virtual happy hours, the community is built by us, and the pandemic can’t stop our spirit!
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our mission are welcome. |
