PLUG Advanced Topics: UnTopic
Roll back
| description |
After the Roots Closure and August Dog Days of Summer, it's time for the Portland Linux/Unix Group to beta test a new location and date: Free Geek on the third TUESDAY of the month as opposed to Wednesday.
Having watched two venues go bankrupt, we will try a new strategy: beverages (including the correct one) and Pizza will be served and a donation requested.
Topic: UnTopic/Roundtable and hopefully hacking on the new PLUG wiki
We have been APPROVED to use Free Geek and there is plenty of time before this event for you to catch the presentation at the Lucky Lab about how Facebook is being used at the Oregon Humane Society.

Portland MeeGo Network Monthly Meeting
Roll back

I thought it would be fun to start to organize a monthly (or so) Portland MeeGo Meetup. For those of you who don't already know me, I'm Intel's Community Manager for MeeGo. I'll be kicking off these meetings, but I would love to have some help in organizing the meetings and finding presenters, so let me know if you are interested.
For those of you who aren't familiar with MeeGo, it is an open source operating system for small form factor devices (netbook, handset, in-vehicle, tablet, connected TV, etc.) You can learn more at http://meego.com
I checked calagator.org and the third Monday of every month is looking fairly open, which would put our first meeting on October 18 (location TBD, but somewhere centrally located near downtown Portland).
Tentative agenda for the first meeting.
6pm - Introductions
6:15pm - MeeGo Overview & Demos
7:15pm - Discuss potential topics for next month
Join our Google Group to receive updates and learn more: http://groups.google.com/group/portland-meego-network |

Portland JavaScript Admirers' Monthly Meeting
Roll back
| description |
The monthly Meeting of Portland's first JavaScript and ECMAscript users' group. We will discuss topics ranging from client-side web frameworks, to functional and prototypal programming theory.
Topics will be announced on the mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs. If you would like to give a presentation, or have a suggestion for a topic, please send a message to [email protected].
Feel free to join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs if you too are a JavaScript admirer. Or visit our web site for more information at http://pdxjs.com/. |

This month Max Ogden will be on hand to talk about Couchappspora < http://github.com/maxogden/couchappspora >, the social communication revolution that he has started. Couchappspora is inspired by Diaspora < http://www.joindiaspora.com/ > but is built as a couchapp using CouchDB < http://couchdb.apache.org/ >.
In addition, Jesse Hallett will present an end-to-end tutorial on how to set up JSTestDriver < http://code.google.com/p/js-test-driver/ > to automate the process of running QUnit tests < http://docs.jquery.com/Qunit > using QUnitTestRunnerPlugin < http://github.com/jivesoftware/QUnitTestRunnerPlugin >. We have had talks on testing before, including a great talk from Duncan Beevers on simulating time with Bobble < http://github.com/duncanbeevers/bobble >. In this talk Jesse will focus on automation and asynchronous tests, including more discussion on when simulated time or asynchronicity is the better choice and when to mix and match.
There will be pizza provided by Jive Software.

Portland R User Group
Main talk:
"Getting Started with R"
M. Edward (Ed) Borasky
Lightning talk:
"R in the Wild: Qmedtrix"
Homer Strong
Social hour (following talks):
Le Hana Japanese Bar & Grill
3500 SW River Parkway
Talk descriptions:
"Getting Started with R" will cover:
Downloading and installing R from CRAN on Windows, Mac or Linux.
Linux includes openSUSE, Ubuntu and Fedora.
Running a few demos.
The structure of CRAN.
Where the documentation is on an installed system.
The RSeek search engine.
Mr. Borasky will also have .ISO files of his R-based openSUSE appliance, which is at http://borasky-research.net/about-smartznmeb/. If you bring blank DVDs, copies can be burned for you. At the moment it has R, GGobi, Mondrian, Rcmdr and a bunch of natural language processing / text mining software, both in R and otherwise, and will also have the Spatial and ReproducibleResearch task views by the meeting. It will run on a 32-bit PC but may not support everyone's WiFi hardware.
"R in the Wild: Qmedtrix" is the first of a (hopefully) recurring series of "R in the Wild" talks that explore how R is actually being used in various companies and organizations in the Portland area. Qmedtrix is "the health care reimbursement decision expert in the workers' compensation, group health and auto medical markets."
Speaker bios:
M. Edward (Ed) Borasky is a freelance developer / engineer specializing in applied mathematics / statistics, social media analytics research and Linux performance engineering / capacity planning. He has created Linux appliances for social media analytics research and algorithmic composition and synthesis of music. His hobby is collecting hobbies.
Homer Strong is a research & development engineer at Qmedtrix Systems Inc. He enjoys reading through the R base package and avocado milkshakes.

Portland Java User Group
Roll back
| description |
This month's topic: TBD
----------
PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, the Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=24 ).

This month's topic: Logging Last Resource (LLR) optimization of XA
Almost every transaction executed on a Java EE Application Server winds up distributed over multiple resources such as JMS destinations and JDBC datasources. Standard OTLP systems employ the XA-2PC protocol, a presumed-abort variant of the Two-Phase Commit protocol to make sure that either all resources commit successfully or all resources abort the transaction if at least one resource fails. As any distributed consensus protocol, XA-2PC is expensive. In this talk, we present Logging Last Resource (LLR) optimization of XA (actually, its Java EE "translation" in form of the JTA spec) in Oracle WebLogic Server. LLR's effectiveness has been validated in world record results achieved by the Oracle stack in the SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark and by high-profile customers in mission-critical applications.
----------
Speaker: Gera Shegalov
Gera has worked in the areas of workflow management, temporal databases, messaging, and recovery. He is currently with Oracle Database High Availability. In his prior role at Oracle, he was part of the Java Platform Group where he worked on the messaging infrastructure such as OC4J JMS, AQ JMS integration, WebLogic FileStore, and LLR. Prior to joining Oracle, Gera worked at the Max Planck Institute of Informatics in Saarbruecken, Germany and interned at Microsoft Research in Redmond, WA.

pdxdevops: Portland DevOps user group meeting
Roll back
| description |
pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. Website: http://pdxdevops.org/ && Twitter: @pdxdevops
Igal Koshevoy will present "Devops case study: Open Source Bridge", describing his work on creating and maintaining reliable, vendor-neutral infrastructure for a regional open source conference running many custom apps. He'll discuss architecture, provisioning, automation, development, deployment, monitoring, migrations and disaster recovery. He will also give a walkthrough the AutomateIt recipes that setup and manage the servers (available as open source at http://github.com/igal/osbp_automateit), with more of a focus on explaining how these are structured rather than on the tool, so you can more easily reuse the ideas with your favorite automation tool.
Other presentations, lightning talks and discussion topics will also be covered. |
