21st Century Skills: Transformative Storytelling
Roll back
| description |
If you want to tell more engaging and compelling stories, in the workplace and beyond, this class is for you.
We create stories everyday to make sense of our world. Stories shape our experiences and values. Stories breathe life into our shared reality. A great story, well presented, can move mountains. We can develop this innate ability to tell stories that move others.
We'll review storytelling as an innate act of self-expression, one that shapes our memories, interactions and group dynamics, communicates ideas and strategies, and builds shared values. Then we'll practice telling stories collaboratively and individually, using interactive and improvisational techniques. You get the opportunity to hone and improve a real-world story (or presentation) you bring to the workshop. This is a limited size class, and you will not be asked to "perform."
LIMITED DISCOUNT OFFER: Use promo code "Impro!" to purchase tickets at $20. Half off regular price!
Additional group and professional discounts available - contact Patricia via the website for details.

Hackathon @ SPLASH 2011
Roll back
| description |
Come spend a day learning about, and hacking on, big data and cloud computing technologies. This is a full-content participatory event, 9 hours of pure hacking fun! Bring yourself and your laptop, and, maybe, a friend or two. We'll provide food and beverages throughout the day. Come prepared with an idea, and get even more out of it: a chance for your team to be placed in the hall of fame as one the 3 best hacks of the day!
Register before September 23rd to take advantage of discounted fees. You don't need to register for the main SPLASH conference in order to participate in the Hackathon, but you may consider doing so for a chance to hear Ivan Sutherland (Turing Award winner), Brendan Eich (Mozilla) and much, much more!
Portland area developers groups: contact [email protected] for instructions on how your members can register with the same discount as ACM members.
Platforms and computing time for the Hackathon kindly provided by Amazon AWS.

Big Data Hackathon at SPLASH/OOPSLA with Amazon Web Services
Roll back
| description |

Hackathons are participatory event. You don't show up to watch or to hang out; you show up to lead or to join a team of other developers to imagine, create, and build something cool and useful in the course of a single day. This may sound impossibly ambitious. It is not. You can get a lot done when you can ignore your inbox and simply focus on the task at hand. The ability to tap in to high-level services certainly helps, as does the fact that everyone shows up expecting to work.

This is an office building; doors and elevators lock at 6pm. When you arrive, press the blue button by the door to talk to security. Tell them you're here for the Ruby meeting at Renewable Funding. They'll call one of us, and we'll bring you up to our office.
Basic kitchen facilities (refrigerator with icemaker, microwave, sink) are available. Feel free to bring your own beer/coffee/soft drinks. |

We create stories everyday to make sense of our world. Stories define and expand our experiences and values. Stories breathe life into the reality that we share. A great story, well told, can change the world. We can develop this innate ability to tell stories in ways that move others. Best for: Professionals wanting to practice telling more engaging and compelling stories.
We'll look at how storytelling colors our everyday lives: shaping interactions and group dynamics, communicating intentions and strategies, building shared values, and defining our paths forward. We'll practice telling stories collaboratively and individually. We'll use interactive techniques to expand your abilities and discover new possibilities, by analyzing and honing the real-world stories you bring to the workshop.
Tickets $40, limited to 20 participants
DISCOUNT: $10 off with promo code "Impro!"
Additional group and professional discounts available - contact Patricia via the website for details.

Portland Perl Mongers -- Shebangml: a markup language with bacon

speaker: Eric Wilhelm
Shebangml is a <a href="http://search.cpan.org/dist/Shebangml/lib/Shebangml/Syntax.pod">markup language</a> which saves programmers from gouging their eyes out on pointy angle brackets.
Most pointy ML data (SGML/XML/XHTML/HTML) can be translated to and from this human-readable, bacony syntax. This allows modern programmers to interface with legacy software such as WWW browsers and other relics like "Enterprise Java Software". But the true power of shebangml lies in the '#!' (hash-bang/shebang) and its programmable templating features.
Unlike most "don't make me write HTML" generators and markup replacements, hbml preserves the good parts of the quoting constructs and attributes+content nature of XML. This makes it not only a fine replacement for obsolete markup languages, but also an ideal foundation for new dialects and applications. The pluggable syntax and interpreter allow you to define static or dynamically loadable constructs, which allows your application to balance convenience features with security issues using clear separations.
This presentation will cover the Shebangml syntax, the basics of the parser/interpreter module, the extensions API, and two real-world applications (the FreeTUIT declarative GUI toolkit and the presentation generator Text::Slidez.)
As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab. |

Free Geek Town Hall Meeting
Roll back
| description |
Your local community technology center has recently changed the way it is governed and this is your chance to have a say in the future of Free Geek.
On Sunday October 2nd at 12pm, Free Geek will hold its first Town Hall Meeting at the Eagles Lodge on SE 50th and Hawthorne. During the meeting you will get the opportunity to hear reports on Free Geekâs progress from staff and the Board of Directors. You will be able to voice your ideas and brainstorm big-picture issues with other volunteers. You will have the chance to participate in workshops, discussions, and Q & A sessions that will help set the future direction of Free Geek.
You will also hear from candidates for the new position of Volunteer Representatives to the Free Geek Board â as part of the governance changes, Free Geek is committed to maintaining a Board with no less than 25% of its membership elected directly by volunteers to represent their interests. Anyone who has completed 30 or more volunteer hours in the last year will be able to vote. Voting opens at the Town Hall, and will remain open for two weeks in order to maximize the number of votes received. Paper ballots will be available at Free Geek; you may call the front desk at 503-232-9350 to request a ballot by mail. We will use the Schulze Method of voting, the most mathematically correct voting system in existence, to ensure the best and fairest representation. There will also be a free lunch provided, a chance to raise your issues directly with staff and members of the Board, and an after-event session in the Eagles bar for participants. We appreciate and look forward to your participation in this historic convening. See you there! |
