Galois Tech Talk (1 of 3 next week!): Formalizing Haskell 98 in the K Semantic Framework
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Presented by David Lazar
Formal semantics is notoriously hard. The K semantic framework (http://k-framework.org/) is a system that makes the task of formally defining programming languages easy and practical. The primary goals of the K framework are modularity, expressivity, and executability. Adding a new language feature to a K definition does not require you to revisit and modify existing semantic rules. The K framework is able to concisely capture the semantics of non-determinism and concurrency. Each K definition automatically yields an interpreter for the language so that the definition can be tested for correctness. These features made it possible to develop a complete formal semantics of the C language in K.
The first half of the talk will be an overview of the K semantic framework. We'll discuss the merits of the framework using the K definition of a complex toy language as a guiding example. The second half of the talk will focus on a work-in-progress formalization of Haskell 98 in K. We'll look at the challenges of formalizing Haskell and the applications of this work. |

BYTE ME 2012 - A Showcase of Technological Art
Roll back
| description |
2012 is a year filled with anticipation... Will our planet come to a sudden end? Will the world economy crumble? Will Obama get re-elected? Who knows? Does anyone care? BYTE ME, 2012 can take your mind off of all these difficult questions and perhaps even answer some of them for you.
The event showcases installations and artwork by Portland artists Libbey White, Donald Delmar Davis, Jonas Nash, and Cameron Adamez that highlight the use of technology in different ways.
The centerpiece is the world premiere of the installation T,E.D. (Transformations, Emotional Deconstruction), created by Sean Hathaway, with music by Carlos Severe Marcelin. This large work features 80 customized Teddy Ruxpin dolls wired together, delivering real-time emotional content from the internet based on the Emotion Wheel developed by the psychologist Robert Plutchik. The work uses speech engines and lighting to deliver a seamless and continuous conversation between the animated dolls who have had their motherboards replaced by the custom board designed for this piece by the creator. Interactive real-time input can also be done by the audience through text messaging or an on-site TED software application. |

Designing Experience with Sound
The Haunted Garden is a sonic environment that participants control by their mere presence. It is a room that listens to the notes in your voice and uses them to compose music and change the color of the room. As the project progressed, further opportunities for control were implemented. An interactive kiosk gives users the ability to choose instruments and control sensitivity and reactivity parameters. The next step was to insert audio from other times and places by playing field recordings (e.g., baby yaks in Tibet, the 8-line in San Francisco), allowing the Haunted Garden to actively respond to the augmented sonic environments.
Simran will discuss the challenges of designing with sound, and how he developed âlistening agentsâ who react and comment on sound in the environment. He will relate experiencesâboth as software developer and sound artistâand explore sound as a medium. Topics will include what is sound sculpture, what challenges were uncovered in creating it, whether the experience worked according to plan, the challenges in developing applications for these sorts of interactions, the unforeseen consequences resulting from initial forays into these kinds of devices, and how an interface based on sound might change how we relate to sound and sonic devices.
About the Speaker
Simran Gleason is an artist and professional nerd. He started drawing the day after getting a masterâs degree in computer science (symbolic and heuristic computation) from Stanford and drifted through many media before arriving at his current focus: making algorithms that make music. Among his more successful installations is Haunted Garden, a room that listens to you, finds the notes in your conversation, and uses them to compose an ambient sound and lightscape. He also did the generative music and light algorithms for SWARM, a gaggle of open source someday-autonomous spherical robots. His work has been shown in galleries in San Francisco and Palo Alto, as well as installations at Maker Fair, Yuriâs Night, Coachella, and the special olympics of art: Burning Man. Keplerâs Orrery is his first iPhone app.

Description: Effective group learning is synonymous with effective group communication and high performance. Language Hunting is a group learning methodology developed to save endangered languages through the tools of accelerated learning. Willem Larsen, President of Language Hunters, will lead participants in an experiential understanding of how accelerated team learning works.
Bio: Willem has worked in community education for the past 15 years—at the Oregon Zoo, OMSI, Tryon Creek State Park, and the Eddy Foundation Land Trust. He was a founding partner of Cascadia Wild! and a founding member of TrackersNW. Through his work in environmental education and local natural history, Willem came to realize that endangered indigenous languages are storehouses of priceless ecological knowledge, and this led to the development of Language Hunting.
Willem has presented Language Hunting at many Agile gatherings such as AgilePDX, Agile 2011 in Salt Lake, Agile Games 2011 in Boston, as well as being hosted at Agilistry Studios and the SolutionsIQ Agile Training Center.
Willem believes that languages, traditions, and skills are treasures that communities hold as a whole—only by learning together can we create the rich lives we want for each other.

Own Collective Agency: a weekly civics meeting
Roll back
| description |
You've likely heard of Collective Agency: the place and the group-of-groups. Did you know it's a representative democracy? Want to know how that benefits you and your friends?
Come to the new weekly civics meeting: the first ever is January 4th. It's called "Own Collective Agency" because that's what the goal is. Responsibilities you can have, ways you can be here, actions you can do, long-term planning, things you can know (want to know the budget, not just numbers but the context of what they mean? we want to share that with you). By learning and doing, you'll support what happens here overall.
Coordinating Council members Alex, Fitz, and Emanuel will be there. Alex will start the meeting conversation by saying, "Sometimes people ask me, 'Do you own Collective Agency?' and I hate that question."
What is ownership? Fitz says about what we have here: "To do these things requires ownership." Ownership by who? What does it mean to own the equivalent of a very small city, which is a workplace? Ownership by citizens: by Coordinating Council Members, by Community Workgroup Organizers, by Volunteers ("I can be there for free? What's the catch?"), and Paid Members. We also have paid meetings, visitors, and associations and independent community organizers in Portland, all of whom sometimes become citizens.
Ownership not just by one person who hires employees and makes all the decisions, because that's the simplest way. But ownership (responsibility and autonomy, checks and balances) by each of us, within a structure called a Constitution, with a Bill of Rights called the Community Guidelines, with the workplace layout and signage, and with the website.
You might have heard that you can work here for free, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. What's the catch? It's that you can own part of this: you can be responsible for this place and group-of-groups staying and growing. |
