DorkbotPDX Workshop -- Surface Mount Soldering
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Learn how to work with surface mount technologies. This workshop is suitable for newcomers to SMT as well as more experienced hobbyists who are looking for a reliable method for building projects using SMT. We will cover the basics of surface mount parts and the tools necessary to work efficiently with them, including a temperature controlled hot plate reflow system which you can build. And we will offer a hands on build session where you will go through all the steps in populating a PCB with parts and doing the reflow soldering process to end up with a working project.
No tools or prior experience is necessary although, if possible, you can bring a soldering iron, some type of magnifier (reading glasses, visor, etc) and a good pair of fine point tweezers. We will have some tools available to use during the workshop.
WHERE: ADX, 417 SE 11th Avenue, Portland, OR
WHEN: Sunday, January 29th, 2012, 1-5pm
Kits will be $8.00 each. Build a 2AA to 3.3V or 5V converter.
Jim Larson and Scott Dixon have a lot of experience teaching this course and are looking forward to doing so again.
Please RSVP by emailing Jim Larson: [email protected]
Class limit of 12.

Triage-a-thon 2011
Love Puppet? Hate the backlog of tickets? Want to help us out? The Puppet community has grown really fast and a lot of you have logged tickets and issues. We’ve tried to give those tickets as much love as we could but some slip through the cracks and sometimes we get overwhelmed. We’ve recognised this and want to try to get a handle on the backlog of tickets. But we need your help to do this.
What we’re going to do is hold a Triage-a-thon hosted locally in our offices and virtually on IRC and the Web. We’re going to review all the open tickets in the Puppet project with a view to:
Update and confirm that issues are still relevant
Ensure tickets are in the right status and all the right information is present to help us resolve it
Close any invalid or no longer relevant tickets
We’ll assign blocks of tickets to every participant, have documentation explaining what you need to do and provide people on the ground to help you make decisions and answer questions.
We’ll also provide pizza, snacks (and beer!) and a venue locally in our Portland, OR offices. Virtually we’ll provide an IRC channel, IM and rewards (t-shirts, patches, stickers, badges, and books) for people who triage tickets and get involved. |

PDMA Learning and Networking Event: CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS â WHY DO WE GET IT WRONG?
Roll back
| description |

While the need to understand the customerâs requirements is widely acknowledged, too many development efforts suffer from problems with the requirements. A common mistake includes capturing what the customer asks for at a high level, without really understanding the customer need and use model for the product. Many product failures can be attributed to not having a full understanding of what creates value for the customer. Fully understanding what customers value will make the product development process more productive and increase the likelihood of customer success and satisfaction.
The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its January Learning and Networking Event. At this event, experienced professionals will discuss their experiences with understanding customer requirements, how to best understand their underlying need, what approaches work best for collaborating with the customer in creating requirements, and common mistakes to avoid.
*A special thanks to the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event.*

Pitch Club
Roll back
| description |
nil |

Want to practice your startup pitch in front of people who've done it before? Crave the harsh criticism of your peers? Need the validation of seeing what works and what doesn't in other pitches?
Bring your 3 minute pitch. Put your name in a hat and if it gets picked, you're on. Leave your Powerpoint at home - just pitch. Then, answer questions and listen to painfully honest feedback from a panel of so-called experts.
The first rule of Pitch Club is you have to be ready to pitch. No teams, no moral support, no looky-loos.
More rules as we think of them.
FAQ:
Q: Who are these so-called experts and what are they going to do to me? A: Your pitch will be evaluated by tech entrepreneurs who have pitched and gotten funded. They are your superiors.
Q: What about NDAs? Someone's going to steal my idea! A: There are no NDAs - use your best judgment about what to talk about and what not to. Also, remember the first rule of fight club - don't talk about fight club. We're all on the honor system here.
Q: My pitch is more than 3 minutes - can I have more time? A: No.
Q: Will it be catered? A: Hell no. You know what's in the lobster bisque.
Q: Can anyone critique a pitch? A: No, only the panel. |

Come do strange things with computers amongst others whilst drinking fine Portland beer. Look for the row of geeks with computers in the back of the main room.
All programming languages welcome. Come work on your own projects, work on others participants' projects, get advice, have fun, etc.
You're encouraged to bring a computer, but can team up with others that brought one too.
Afterwards, the group descends on the 12th and Hawthorne foodcart pod for additional nourishment.
Also, many people meet up at the pub during the same time as the hackathon to play boardgames they bring which you're welcomed to play. |

AgilePDX - Agile Tune Up
Roll back
| description |

→ |
It's time for your yearly Agile tune-up! Has your Agile team made its new year's resolutions yet? If not, this month's AgilePDX meeting will help. It's all about helping you understand what you can do to improve the state of your Agile practice.
James Shore will kick things off with a description of Agile Fluency. He'll describe multiple levels of proficiency and help you figure out where your team is today. Then, he'll provide specific techniques and practices to focus on as you work to reach the next level.
Next, we'll turn it over to you! You'll break into groups focused on the issues that matter most to your teams. You'll have the opportunity to learn from each other's experiences and to discuss how you can improve your team. Experienced Agile practitioners will be on hand to answer questions and help you figure out which improvements will make the most difference for you.
This event is free and is at Puppet Labs. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland).
The program starts at 7:00 pm.
After the program you're invited to join us for a no-host gathering at a nearby brewpub for further discussion of agile fluency

Galois Tech Talk (3/3 next week!): On deadlock verification in micro-architectural models of communication fabrics.
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Presented by Julien Schmaltz.
Communication fabrics constitute an important challenge for the design and verification of multicore architectures. To enable their formal analysis, micro-architectural models have been proposed as an efficient abstraction capturing the high-level structure of designs. Micro-architectural models also include a representation of the protocols using the communication fabrics. This combination of different aspects in a single model is crucial for deadlock verification. Deadlocks emerge or are prevented in this combination: a system with a deadlock-free communication network combined with a deadlock-free protocol may have deadlocks or a system with a network with deadlocks combined with a deadlock-free protocol may be deadlock-free. This combination also makes the verification problem more complicated. We will present an algorithm for efficient deadlock verification in micro-architectural models. We will discuss the limitations of this approach and point to future research direction. An important future application of our methodology is the verification of cache coherency at the level of micro-architectures. |

Part Ignite (if you haven’t been, you should), part Pint (if you remember back that far), part MindShare (if you want to meet new people), Spark is a monthly meet up for technologists, designers, developers, product managers, agency wonks, project managers, producers, database geeks, and other nerds of all flavors.
Each month we’ll host a speaker, demonstration, experiment, lecture, or learning exercise for a short time at the beginning of the evening. Then we’ll turn the music up, the lights down, and rock the night away at the Jack London Bar. Let's mix. Let's mingle. Let's share ideas.
The inaugural event is this Thursday, Jan 5 @Jack London Bar. Basement of the Rialto. 529 Southwest 4th Avenue. Starts at 5:30. Ends whenever you get tired.
The bar will be open at 4 for happy hour specials.
Looking forward to building a community!

Galois Tech Talk (2 of 3 next week!): Model-based Code Generation and Debugging of Concurrent Programs
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Presented by Borzoo Bonakdarpour.
Design and implementation of distributed systems often involve many subtleties due to their complex structure, non-determinism, and low atomicity as well as occurrence of unanticipated physical events such as faults. Thus, constructing correct distributed systems has always been a challenge and often subject to serious errors. We propose a method for generating distributed implementations from high-level component-based models that only employ simple synchronization primitives. The method is a sequence of three transformations preserving observational equivalence: (1) A transformation from a global state to a partial state model, (2) a transformation which replaces multi-party strong synchronization primitives in atomic components by point-to-point send/receive primitives based on asynchronous message passing, and (3) a final transformation to concrete distributed implementation based on platform and architecture. We study the properties of different transformations, in particular, performance criteria such as degree of parallelism and overhead for coordination.
The second part of the talk will focus on an automated technique for optimal instrumentation of multi-threaded programs for debugging and testing of concurrent data structures. We define a notion of observability that enables debuggers to trace back and locate errors through data-flow instrumentation. Observability in a concurrent program enables a debugger to extract the value of a set of desired variables through instrumenting another (possibly smaller) set of variables. We formulate an optimization problem that aims at minimizing the size of the latter set. Our experimental results on popular concurrent data structures (e.g., linked lists and red-black trees) show significant performance improvement in optimally-instrumented programs using our method as compared to ad-hoc over-instrumented programs. |

PRESENTATION
by
Keith Lofstrom
Since 2005, Randall Munroe's xkcd.com, "A webcomic of romance,
sarcasm, math, and language" has covered many topics dear to FOSS
advocates and has been discussed on the PLUG list many times.
The #1000 comic is expected to appear Friday January 6 just after
midnight eastern time, making Thursday January 5 "xkcd1k eve".
Join us for a celebration of XKCD1K eve at the PLUG general
meeting. We can display and discuss/explain some of the
Free/Libre/Open source cartoons, the various weblogs and forums
that have sprung up around them, draw our own cartoons (Keith
will bring art paper and pens), perhaps discuss the technology
of web comics.
Homework: bring your own list of favorite xkcd cartoons, and
we will display them at the meeting. Bring your artistic and
"right brained" friends. Bring your black porkpie hat. If
you are Richard Stallman, bring your katana sword.
Afterwards, at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub at 1945 nw Quimby, we
can welcome comic #1000, just after 9pm Pacific Time. Or not,
Randall is a trickster and may give us strip #1025, avoiding
the definition the size of a "kilo" ( http://xkcd.com/394/ ) .
