AgilePDX Westside (morning) - Mark Menger "The agile journey at PGE"
Roll back
| description |
Abstract:
Application Delivery at PGE currently uses both waterfall and iterative work management methodologies. PGEâs IT uses these to support six internal lines of business with their project and production support needs. PGE started the agile journey in 2009 in aid of a large scale multi-project initiative to roll-out network read meters for our customers. Over the subsequent three and half years, that experience was extended into where PGEâs IT delivery is today. Scaling to the enterprise required the synthesis of many different viewpoints, overcoming the deficiencies of agile training as applied in larger circumstances, and fabricating new processes and tools to enhance and manage the value of delivery. During this talk Mark will share highlights of what was valuable, what was a struggle, what he would do the same if starting over, and what he would do differently.
Bio:
Mark Menger is a passionate leader in the adoption of Scrum at Portland General Electric, believing strongly in the underpinning concepts of servant leadership and self-organization. He led four Scrum teams and the enterprise architecture function of PGEâs multi-million dollar Automated Metering Infrastructure initiative. As the supervisor of Application Delivery Services, he is currently scaling PGEâs adoption of Agile software delivery to 14 teams across six business client functions. This effort includes business client relationship development, and improvements in quality assurance and engineering practices. When heâs not rooting for the Timbers, the remainder of his attention is focused on Sailflow reports for the Columbia and Willamette rivers. |

CHIFOO Presents: Current Trends in Gesture and Body Tracking Interfaces
Roll back
| description |
Omek Interactive provides the most advanced tools for incorporating gesture recognition and full body tracking into your applications. We will talk about trends in gesture interface developmentâwhat are the challenges for developing gesture interfaces, and where is gesture being incorporated (TVs, games, digital signage, medical, museums, sports, home automation, etc.). Weâll discuss how to make your applications easier to use. Weâll talk about workflows to make developing applications more efficient in terms of time and cost. Weâll explain our gesture library and why having a set of predefined gestures allows you to develop rapidly and reduce your time to market. OMEK will demonstrate a system with gesture and body tracking.
About the Speaker
Jonathan joined Omek full time after serving as advisor to the company, and board director, over a span of more than three years. Jonathanâs experience as an entrepreneur includes the successful launch and sale of several companies in the fields of media, gaming, and technology. Prior to joining Omek, Jonathan served as CEO of Double Fusion, the leading independent in-game advertising firm. Prior to that, he helped establish the digital media and gaming practice at United Talent Agency. Portland Area Game Development Interest Group October Meeting + Roundtable

Hi all! It’s PAGDIG time again. This time at a brand new location.
While the Lucky Lab has served us well for many a meetup, we’ve been looking for a new venue for a while where we could hold roundtable discussions at a reasonable volume without a lot of bad acoustics, especially now that outdoor seating is not an option with fall weather. Finally that month is here, as Corwin has graciously arranged to get us meeting space at the p:ear Gallery at 338 NW 6th Avenue. It will be Tuesday, 10/30 at 7pm. We were unable to book our usual Thursday this month, but we will endeavor to do that next month.
To celebrate, pizza and beverages will be provided. Feel free to bring your own stuff too, or stuff to share if you are nice like that.
The roundtable discussion subject this month:
Marketing Your Creation and Yourself in the Modern Era, for Profit and Non-Profit
As the gatekeeping for the release of games has become decentralized in recent years, so have the channels in which we get the word out about what we make. Whether it’s for the purpose of marketing a product for profit or getting the word out about smaller indie projects (as in the case for Kickstarters, etc), the landscape for promotion seems paradoxically both more accessible and more puzzling than ever.
How do you market these channels while staying authentic?
What about channels like Greenlight that mix marketing and gatekeeping?
How important are trailers and videos?
Are the old channels like ads and publishers even relevant anymore or is word of mouth king?
What about bundles and offer aggregators?
Is the “story” of who is developing their game of interest to the consumer?
Let’s put our heads together and come up with some kind of road map, or at least have fun trying. |

What is BarCamp?
BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. You never quite know what to expect at BarCamp. When you arrive on Friday, there will be an agenda framework (times / rooms), but the content for the sessions will be decided by the participants. |

Glass Plate GAme
Roll back
| description |
The Glass Plate Game, inspired by Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game, is essentially a conversation in the trappings of a board game. The idea is to spark creative and interesting dialog as the players explore connections between ideas against a dynamic mosaic map. There are no winners or losers. There is no order of play. Conversation continues throughout, and anyone can make a move at any time. The end result is an artifact of the conversation. The "game board" makes it easy to follow the twists and turns of the conversation.
This time the game will be played with a theme: Arts.

The Zissou Society for Programming Language Exploration (aka pdxlang) is a general programming language discussion/exploration group. The weird, the offbeat, the little-known, the forgotten programming languages. These are the things we discuss and explore.
We've got two talks lined up this time, and we probably will have one more added. (If you want to talk, drop a note to the list or Matt.)
Featured languages of the evening include Nickle and REBOL.
There will likely be pizza and beer, if that helps you clear your calendar. |

November PDMA Learning and Networking Event -- EMERGING TRENDS IN PRODUCT MANAGEMENT AND MARKETING: WHICH ONES DESERVE YOUR ATTENTION?
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its November Learning and Networking Event on Emerging Trends in Product Management and Marketing. New ideas and different approaches emerge regularly in the disciplines of product discovery, development and delivery. Examples are design thinking, open innovation and product owners for Agile. As a group, weâll assemble a list of the major trends that weâre observing. Weâll review what the industry thought leaders are talking about and then try to put these trends into context; whether they are major inflection points redefining product management or passing fads that detract from the execution of product management fundamentals.
The source material for this event is based on the presentation voted the âBest Sessionâ at Mayâs ProductCamp Portland. The session will be interactive in nature. In addition to presenting research results, weâll draw on the insights and opinions of the audience during a Q&A session to add greater depth and different perspectives. Come prepared with several trends youâve heard about which youâd like to contribute to our conversation. Hopefully, youâll leave with at least a couple of topics youâll want to explore further.
A special thanks to the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event.

Software Defined Networking, OpenFlow, ARCCN, and the Skolkovo Innovation Centre
Roll back
| description |
Software Defined Networking (SDN) replaces dedicated network hardware with standards based software running on servers that implements the control plane of switches and routers. Dr. Turbyfill will discus ARCCN's work to provide an OpenFlow standard-based application development network platform taking much of the features and functionality that exist inside custom proprietary software and driving it into an open SDN space. OpenFlow is an API that links an Ethernet switch and a controller. OpenFlow implements layer 2 Ethernet switches as flows directed by a centralized controller(s).
ARCCN is a non-profit organization, located in the Skolkovo Innovation Center, Moscow. Skolkovo is Russiaâs answer to Silicon Valley. Its goal is "to concentrate international intellectual capital, thereby stimulating the development of break-through projects and technologies." Dr. Turbyfill will also discuss ARCCN's relationship with Skolkovo and how ARCCN is building collaborative relationships with international academic, research and commercial organizations to achieve its goals.

<b> Speaker Biography: </b>
<i>Dr. Turbyfill</i> holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Her first research project in the field of Computer Science was the Wisconsin Benchmark that pioneered benchmarks by which relational database systems are measured today. She has advanced her career with milestones consisting of the first commercial implementations of leading edge products such as: the first firewall appliance, SunScreen SPF-100 and SKIP, one of the first commercial Virtual Private Networks (VPN); the first managed security service and the first round trip email marketing service. While at Sun Microsystems, she worked with CISSP, a coalition of companies, on changing export controls on encryption. As VP of Engineering at StackSafe, she led the team that developed the StackSafe Test Center, which was named the 2008 ITIL Innovation of the Year. In 2009 Dr. Turbyfill was inducted into the Women in Technology International's (WITI) Hall of Fame for her longstanding commitment to create opportunities for women in technology careers.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) replaces dedicated network hardware with standards based software running on servers that implements the control plane of switches and routers. Dr. Turbyfill, Director of Engineering at The Applied Research Center for Computer Networks (ARCCN), a non-profit organization, located in the Skolkovo Innovation Center, Russiaâs answer to Silicon Valley, will discuss ARCCNâs SDN work and ARCCNâs relationship with Skolkovo.
The Skolkovo Innovation Centre goal is âto concentrate international intellectual capital, thereby stimulating the development of break-through projects and technologies.â
ARCCN is focused on creating enabling technologies for the next generation of computer technology. Its vision is to develop a world class Russian center specializing in SDN âto commoditize network hardware and provide a standard-based application development platform taking much of the features and functionality that exist inside custom proprietary software and driving it into an open SDN space.â OpenFlow is an example of SDN. "OpenFlow offers a standard-based Application Programming Interface or API that links an Ethernet switch and a controller. This offers a model in which layer 2 Ethernet switches are low-cost merchant silicon based devices where flows are directed by a centralized controller(s). ARCCN is building collaborative relationships with international academic, research and commercial organizations to achieve its goals.
A light dinner of pizza and beverage will be supplied.
