As luck would have it, her husband Kevin Rose is speaking at WebVisions, this week. Anyway, he’ll be at the book signing to hang out, as well.

update Calagator::Event 1250464105 PSU Tech Talk: Text Lacks Empathy Roll back

description Have you ever written a nice friendly email and gotten a reply that seems like they read a whole different email? In Open Source communities we write to each other all the time, but we’re not really writing, we’re speaking with our fingers. Text is our primary way to communicate, but text has problems. Speaking conveys subtle emotional cues that as social animals we rely on; text strips them out. A thoughtful correspondent can put those emotions back, but we’re often not thoughtful. This talk is about the special problems of textual communication: mitigating them; ensuring that what you mean to say is what is understood; interpreting messages that seem totally out of whack; and increasing empathic bandwidth. About the speaker ---------------------- Nóirín Plunkett is a jack of all trades, and a master of several. By day, she works for Eucalyptus Systems, as a geekEnglish translator, and general force multiplier. She's passionate about community, communication, and collaboration. Her open source work epitomizes the saying “if you want something done, ask a busy person”: Nóirín cut her teeth on the httpd documentation project at Apache, but soon started running conferences for the Apache Software Foundation . She was involved in setting up the Community Development project, is Org Admin for the Google Summer of Code (with more than 40 students!), and continues to contribute to projects as diverse as Infrastructure and Incubator. Nóirín was the first woman on the board of the Apache Software Foundation, and continues to sit on the board of the Open Cloud Initiative. She's also an advisor to The Ada Initiative, supporting women in open technology and culture. When she’s not online, Nóirín often found on the dance floor or down at the pub, although she’s also a keen harpist & singer, and an excellent sous chef! update Calagator::Event 1250463635 OEN Workshop in Hillsboro: Lean Startup - The One Page Business Model Roll back

description A startup is an organization that is searching for a business model that works. It's critical to understand that a startup's business model is a set of assumptions - and those assumptions need to be tested, earlier rather than later! And earlier means before you develop the product or service! (But even if you've already started developing the product is still the right time to validate the business model!) A 1 page business model canvas is an excellent way to capture the assumptions underlying your business model, so you can methodically test those assumptions. In this workshop, you'll learn about the lean startup approach, and be introduced to the 1 Page Lean Business Model Canvas, and discuss how you can use the canvas to test each assumption in the model. Then you'll work through a “hands on” exercise where you complete and present to the group a portion of your 1 page lean canvas. All participants will receive printed copies of the Lean Canvas to use, and will also be provided with a PowerPoint version of the canvas so they can continue to create canvases on a computer. Who should attend: Anyone who is starting a business and has not yet developed and tested the business model for that business. This material and process is relevant for any startup - not just tech startups. Presenter: Steve Morris Steve Morris is the Executive Director of OTBC and the Managing Director of OregonStartups.com. He is a veteran of three start-ups, and has more than 25 years of management experience in the software, service, and semiconductor test industries at companies such as Hewlett Packard, Integrated Measurement Systems, Cadence Design Systems, Mentor Graphics, Credence Corporation and Teseda Corporation. He holds a B.A. in mathematics from Reed College and a Masters of Science degree from Carnegie-Mellon University Graduate School of Industrial Administration (now The Tepper School of Business). When: Wednesday, July 17, 2013 Time: 9:00am - Noon Where: Hillsboro Chamber of Commmerce, 5193 NE Elam Young Parkway, Suite A, Hillsboro, OR 97124 OEN & HCC Member: $32 Non-Member $70 A startup is an organization that is searching for a business model that works. create Calagator::Event 1250464274 Startup Your Startup: The Dog Ate My Startup Roll back

description nil Come hear tales of brilliant & young startup founders and get some great Q&A going. High School Musical my ass, how about High School Startup? Or Junior High Startup? Reserve your spot today for The Dog Ate My Startup next Wednesday evening at NedSpace 5th Avenue, third floor, doors open at 5pm, event starts at 5:30pm Seating is limited. Colby Aley is a 16 year old web developer, High School student and entrepreneur. He enjoys working with early stage startups, going from nothing to launched product. After starting his first (failed) company not knowing how to code, Colby decided never again to do so without more solid programming skills. His influencers include Sam Soffes of Nothing Magical and Maciej Ceglowski of Pinboard. Jackson Gariety attended Grant High School 2009 to 2012, he started doing freelance web design in early 2009. His first clients were local businesses and slowly grew his abilities and network to pay for better design and development tools. In 2012 he started working with Brian Hendrickson to build a social web platform called HashTraffic which has been developed and is currently being sold. He also teaches a class on app development. Andrew Oesterreich is a 12 year old 7th grade entrepreneur who attends Wood Middle School in Wilsonville. He started out by doing odd jobs for his neighbors then moved on to giving younger students drum lessons. Last fall, he ventured in on a duct-tape wallet business with 2 friends. It wasn't long til half of the school had a shiny new duct tape wallet. He loves shark tank and is always looking for new businesses to create. The emcee for The Dog Ate My Startup and open QA event is the always funny, the sometimes sober, and the ever flatulent John Friess, founder and CEO of Journey Gym. Doors open at 5:00pm for networking Event starts at 5:30pm and goes until 6:30pm or 6:45pm, it's up to John, let's hope he's lucid.
