Mobile Portland: When Responsive Web Design Meets the Real World
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Why are so many responsive web designs crap?
Over 90% of responsive web sites are bloated. These sites may look good on mobile devices, but few people will ever see them because they take to long to load.
While the core tenets of responsive web design are easy to understand, doing it well is much more difficult. Slapping a few media queries on your existing site isn't enough.
The solution is mobile first responsive web design.
Mobile first and responsive web design aren't simply two great tastes that go great together. No they represent much more than that. Mobile first responsive web design is the responsible way to build responsive design. It is the best way to build something that is both responsive from a layout AND a performance perspective.
Image of Boston Globe Responsive Design
But if mobile first is the right way to do responsive design, then why are so few people doing it? In this session, we'll dig into why mobile first responsive design matters and the five techniques necessary to make it work.
If your company is exploring responsive design of even if you're already building responsive designs, you won't want to miss this talk.
About Jason Grigsby
Jason GrigsbyJason and his Cloud Four co-founder Lyza Gardner wrote Head First Mobile Web which teaches web developers how to take their web skills and transfer them to mobile. He was a signatory to the Future Friendly manifesto which addresses sensible approaches to device diversity.
Jason travel frequently giving talks and workshops helping individuals and organizations figure out how to best apply web technology to their multi-device efforts.
Jason is also the founder of Mobile Portland. He normally avoids speaking at Mobile Portland meetings for this reason, but we've twisted his arm this month. |

Come join your fellow geo nerds for some map hacking, geographic learning, beer drinking, and conversation having! MaptimePDX is a brand new, map-focused hack and learn event, modeled after the hugely successful weekly San Francisco meetup, [MaptimeSF](http://www.meetup.com/Maptime-SF/).
At our first hack day, we will be working through an exercise to edit and contribute to collaborative geographic datasets using GitHub and [geojson.io](http://geojson.io). There will also be a table for folks to come and hack on and talk their own projects with others!
This inaugural MaptimePDX event is being held in conjunction with [WhereCampPDX 6](http://calagator.org/events/1250464212), an unconference for all things geospatial.
**Beginners especially welcome!** Bring a laptop if you can. See you there! |

Portland JavaScript Admirers' Monthly Meeting
Roll back
| description |
The monthly meeting of Portland's first JavaScript and ECMAscript users' group. We host presentations and discussions on everything JavaScript-related - including JavaScript frameworks, node.js, CoffeeScript, and whatever else comes up.
This will be a lightning talk meeting! I encourage everyone to give a short presentation - five minutes or less - especially if you have not presented at pdxjs before. The talk can be on anything you want.
Pick a topic and make some slides, if you want to use slides. A five minute talk works well with ten or fewer slides, which gives you 30 seconds per slide. Add your name and a link to your slides (if any) to the <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsEHtxZZUtqidExwNnN4U3FCb0QzN3FLbkJEQWcySmc&usp=sharing">signup sheet</a>.
An addition, Kyle Drake will be presenting on <a href="http://coinpunk.org">Coinpunk</a>, the future of browser cryptography, why he thinks server-side encryption and password hashing is going away, and how to use HTML5/JS/Node to develop secure applications for Bitcoin, a technology Rickard Falkvinge called "the Napster of banking".
Feel free to join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs if you too are a JavaScript admirer.
If you're interested in making a presentation at this or at a future meet-up, please e-mail [email protected]. |

Please note, their event starts at 7pm instead of our usual 6:30, so grab a bite to eat and saunter over at 7pm. There are some great places to hang out for an hour at 11th and Division so hopefully it'll work out well.

Let's get together and build cool stuff.
Bring your computer and your Python projects and come hack with us from 6-9pm on fourth Tuesdays!
Never written Python before? No problem. There will be Pythonistas at the ready to mentor beginners. Anyone at any level of Python experience is welcome and invited to join us! |

Marshall will present:
* Effective vs ineffective practices in influencer relations
* Timing your outreach to thought leaders and press
* The future of influencer relations online - beyond pitches and PR
Agenda:
The presentation will be 15-to-20 minute, followed by Q&A and discussion, and refreshments.
What is hypePDX?
HypePDX is a monthly meetup for PDX tech marketing folks. The goal is to put the smartest marketing pros in the PDX tech scene into a room every month to learn, collaborate and have a bit of a good time.
The goal is to keep it focused on collaboration and education. We've all been to way too many "networking events."
Every month's meetup will feature a local marketing/startup pro who can share experiences, best practices, industry knowledge, etc.. |

Gimme Shelter!
Roll back
| description |
When:
Competition begins 6pm Friday, September 20th, and ends at 6pm, Sunday, September 22nd, followed by an awards ceremony and after party.
Challenge:
Design, source, and build the most comfortable, good looking, easy to build, and sustainable micro-home you possibly can in a single weekend, spending no more than the equivalent of a single month's rent.
Guidelines:
-For fairness, we recommend teams of no less than 3 and no more than 7 team members. You may have unlimited active supporters, and are encouraged to get as many people following and supporting your as team as possible, as this will help you instantly source materials, tools, and skills, and problem-solve in realtime.
-Teams may build onsite or off. They must have their completed houses at Green Anchors by the time the competion ends at 6pm, Sunday, September 22nd.
-The goal is to create an open-source micro home design that can be build for the equivalent of one month's rent. Therefore, meets can spend $0 using found materials, but teams cannot spend more than $500 on materials. You should keep a record of everything you buy, and everything you get for free.
-Every team must have someone filling the roles of photographer and blogger and social media expert. This can be the same person, or many people. The purpose of this rule is so the people supporting the teams can be kept up to date as the project progresses in realtime, with blog posts, Facebook posts, and tweets. This also helps to create a very well-documented record of how you built your house- so that other people can do the same. It's much easier to document a project while it's happening than to try to explain how you did it later.
-You may assemble materials and brainstorm designs before the event, but please don't start building! It won't be very much fun to watch if you already have a house built!
Scoring Criteria:
Cost
-Actual cost to build
-Cost to replicate with new materials
-Embodied energy cost/ sustainability of materials
Replicabilty
-Detail of documentation
-Ease of building
-Availability of materials
Style
-Flow
-Comfort
-Looks
Functionality
-How does it fair in the waterproof test (this should be funâ¦)
-How many human needs, besides shelter, does it meet?
-Does it have a kitchen?
-Electricity?
-Toilet?
-Shower?
Prizes:
Teams should compete for the fun of it. However, we will reach out to local businesses, particularly restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, for free perks like rounds of beers, coffee, and free meals. This is also an opportunity for crowdsourcing, and anyone is free to throw a non-monetary gift or perk into the prize pot.
Awards:
In addition to the grand prize, which will go to the team with the highest cumulative score, there will also be awards in each sub category with their own prizes, and a bunch of silly, made up awards to keep it fun.
Award Ceremony and After-Party
At 6pm on Sunday, there will be an after party. Entry to this event will be sliding scale, from $5 to $1,000,000, with 100% of the proceeds going build more tiny houses, following the winning design. |
