Bug Bounty Programs
Bug bounties have become increasingly popular as a staple of strong security programs, so much so that even traditionally conservative companies are beginning to use them. However, they are very difficult to implement correctly. In this talk I will discuss a brief history of bug bounties, the current landscape of bug bounty efficiency (including statistics from the programs of small, medium and large companies) and how to optimize a program for success.
Speaker: Dylan Saccomanni
Dylan Saccomanni is a software security engineer with six years of experience in penetration testing and vulnerability research. He has found and disclosed security vulnerabilities in large companies like GoDaddy and Microsoft, and before working at Simple he ran a security consultancy catering to Series A tech startups.
Cost:
ISACA Members: $20.00
Guests and Non-Members: $25.00
We expect this event to sell out. Attendance will be limited to the first 60 registrations. Do not delay, and register today!

Don't be a target - create a do-it-yourself plan instead...
If you use technology in your day to day operations (and who doesn't), join us on the morning of Wednesday, April 6th for its first of four events on mitigating the risks of business impacts through cybersecurity. Network with peers, learn from subject matter experts and walk away with the foundation for an incident response framework for yourself and your organization.
Our four-part series will include:
-alignment to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework
-guidance from Cybersecurity subject matter experts - representing both private and public sectors
-individual support for customizing an incident response framework for you/your organization
-connectivity to peers in a safe environment for building a scalable plan that will positively impact your entire organization
This event is the kickoff to a four-part series hosted by the Tech Leadership Community around the topic of Cybersecurity. Each event will provide building blocks to help guide a do-it-yourself incident response framework for your team and entire organization. Whether you attend one event by yourself, bring your peers to the entire series, or any other combination, the subject matter experts selected for each event will provide individual guidance on the final framework for you/your company.
Our first event will focus on scalable incident response with guidance from the following leads:
Subject Matter Experts:
Jerry Holcombe, Online Business Systems
Dennis Tomlin, Multnomah County
Incident Response Team:
David Neufeld, Online Business Systems
Lance Kidd, High Strategy Consulting, LLC
Thank you to our sponsor, Neudesic!

ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
<em>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

## Automation for Mobile Devices with Calabash by Shannon Atkinson
Using Calabash for automation for both iOS and Android applications can be frustrating and difficult. This talk will focus around using a Cucumber/Ruby/Calabash to formulate a single GIT repo for testing both iOS and Android apps with the same test cases.
## Embracing --api by Mitch Lloyd
It's hard to beat the productivity of Rails in the hands of an experienced developer. But what happens when user expectations drag your server-rendered application into the tortured hellscape of client-side JavaScript?
JavaScript creeps into your once beautiful code base: a typeahead search field, a client-side validation, an AJAX-powered star rating widget. This pathogen has no unit tests and causes the number of bugs and Selenium tests to grow.
In this talk I'll explore why companies that resist client-side rendering still ship 350KB of gzipped JavaScript to their users. With examples I'll argue that there is a better way: separating your API from your client code. This approach that I once reserved for "highly interactive" applications, I now consider "a matter of course". For the majority of applications it leads to faster development, simpler architecture, and more flexible approaches for building and deploying UI.
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.

<p>Simple's Data Engineering team has spent the past year and a half building data pipelines to enable the customer service, marketing, finance, and leadership teams to make data-driven decisions.</p> <p>We'll walk through why the data team chose certain open source tools, including Kafka, RabbitMQ, Postgres, Celery, and Elasticsearch. We'll also discuss the advantages to using Amazon Redshift for data warehousing and some of the lessons learned operating it in production.</p> <p>Finally, we'll touch on the team's choices for the languages used in the data engineering stack, including Scala, Java, Clojure, and Python.</p> |

The Cheron Mayhall Lecture Series presents Gabriella Coleman
"How Anonymous (Narrowly) Evaded the Cyberterrorism Rhetorical Machine"
Anonymous—the masked activists who have contributed to hundreds of political operations around the world since 2008—were perfectly positioned to earn the title of cyberterrorists. In this talk Gabriella Coleman considers the various factors that allowed them to narrowly escape this designation.
Thursday, March 3
7 p.m.
Marsh Hall 216
Gabriella Coleman is a cultural anthropologist who holds the Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy at McGill University in Canada. She researches, writes, and teaches on computer hackers and digital activism. She is the author of Coding Freedom: The Ethics and Aesthetics of Hacking as well as Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy: The Many Faces of Anonymous, winner of the 2015 Diana Forsythe Prize by The American Anthropological Association's Committee on the Anthropology of Science, Technology and Computing. More information at http://gabriellacoleman.org
The Cheron Mayhall Lecture series features thought-provoking speakers who are invited to present iconoclastic yet feasible ideas on hot-button contemporary topics. Each speaker is encouraged to lay out detailed, evidence-driven arguments that will push the audience to think critically about 'received ideas' and what we collectively consider common sense. The lecture is followed by a robust question-and-answer session where students, staff, faculty, and community members can challenge the ideas presented in order to push the conversation to the next level. Formerly called the "In Your Face Lecture Series," previous speakers include: Will Potter, Theresa Williamson, Christian Parenti, Heather Rogers, and many more.
Co-sponsors: The School of Social Sciences, The McCall Center for Policy Innovation, the Department of Politics and Government, The Anthropology/Sociology Club

AgilePDX Dntn Pub Lunch: Agile Compatible Metrics
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
It can be a struggle to find useful metrics for evaluating the efficiency of agile teams.
Traditional metrics can give an incomplete or misleading view of how well a team is actually delivering.
Story points can also be misleading, as it's easy to inflate story sizes to game the metric.
So what's a worthwhile metric to use for judging how well a team is doing, and most importantly,
how well the team is improving? What have you found that works well?
Come join us discuss what's valuable and what to avoid.
Usual time, usual place. We'll be in the back at Ringlers from 12p to 1p. We start on
time and end on time. RSVP's to [email protected] are welcome but not required. |

Learn about Advanced Data Visualization - Data Management PDX March Chapter Meeting
Roll back
| description |
After a review of our previous meeting about the basics of Data Visualization (Dec. 2012) we will explore some of the more complex issues of expressing complex business behavior in graphic form. You do not need to have attended the basics presentation to get value from this advanced presentation.
Included in this session are the five basic chart types, along with topics of normalization and the importance of context. We will then look at more advanced concepts for the expression of metrics (such as cartograms, step functions, metrics which go negative, non-linear scales, and lineage charts). We will discuss the importance of understanding volatility in a metric, and the expression of uncertainty and ambiguity.
Rankings can be misleading; we will show how. Tree maps are useful, but heat maps can be dangerous. We may look at using scatter diagrams to evaluate the correlation of market indexes. If we have time, we will look at the expression of non-metric ideas, including VENN diagrams.
