Portland Linux/Unix Group General Monthly Meeting: OpenTelemetry: A Primer with Jason Plumb
Roll back
| description |

Summary:
OpenTelemetry is a collection of open standards and industry-tested components that facilitates observation of software systems. Let's dissect this vague jargon and discuss what that actually means for Linux practitioners and how it can be used to understand software interactions and performance.
Bio:
Jason Plumb (he/him) is a software engineer, hacker generalist, experimenter, and artist from Portland, Oregon. He's a dork who first installed Slackware about 29 years ago, and hi has used a Linux desktop for all of this century. He is a maintainer of OpenTelemetry Android and an approver in several OpenTelemetry Java projects. When away from a desk, Jason helps install free payphones, builds synthesizers, obsesses over cult films, and rides steel-frame bicycles. |

This is an [Umbraco](https://github.com/umbraco/umbraco-cms) community event for technologists and business folks exploring how openness is a growth strategy.
We'll be joined by Mats Persson, the CEO of Umbraco, one of the world’s most trusted open-source platforms for content management, for a conversation about how openness isn’t just a technical choice but a strategy for innovation and growth.
There will be some great discussions about how open and extensible platforms give a competitive edge, how collaborative communities drive innovation, and how designing systems for adaptation is a way of future-proofing in the current economic landscape where so much is changing so fast.
There will also be some fun, themed wine pairings at this event, curated by the folks at [Pairings Portland](https://www.pairingsportland.com/). |

Join us for the October edition of ProductTank PDX!
We’re excited to welcome two incredible speakers, Sarah Crispin (Product Management, Strategy & Operations Consultant) and Justin Wolske (Chief Product Officer @ Yellowbrick), for an evening exploring the problem with problems, and how to leverage frameworks to move fast. As always, we’ll also have plenty of time to meet other product folks over drinks and tasty snacks.
📅 Wednesday, October 29, 2025
🕕 6:00 – 8:00pm

### Lighting the Frameworks on Fire
We learn a lot about best practices and frameworks, but it’s rare that product managers find themselves with the space and time to use them as intended. This is a story about learning the rules of the game you’re actually playing so that you can adjust your approach and cobble tools together to move fast, play hard, and maybe even score. Spoiler: success in this endeavor requires an A+ team and, if we’re being honest, luck.
About Sarah: Sarah found her way to product management after teaching middle school, coaching collegiate track & field, and working as a management consultant. In her most recent full-time role, Sarah served as a Global Director of Product at ASICS, where she worked to pivot a legacy fitness app. Originally from Maine, Sarah moved to Portland after almost 20 years in Boston. She loves dogs, running in the woods, learning about big ideas, and sports documentaries (recommendations welcome).
***
### The Problem with Problems: Rethinking Urgency
A discussion centered around reframing problems as jobs to be done, and how that helps you build better personas and psychographics. The talk is catered first toward early-stage founders with product responsibilities (others can find something useful, too).
About Justin: Film producer by trade, he has worked in EdTech since 1999. Currently, he's the Chief Product Officer @ Yellowbrick and Principal @ Airy Disc Learning. His areas of focus are around digital learning products (with a specialization in using narrative-based pedagogies to drive executive-function learning), media production, lean/agile product development, and early/mid-stage entrepreneurship strategy.
***
🎉 Don’t miss it!
Come connect with fellow product managers, designers, engineers, and enthusiasts over drinks and snacks. See you there! |

You've got an idea for a startup. Here's how to know if it's worth pursuing.

| description |

Doors open at 5:15pm. We start at 5:30pm
About this workshop
The foundation of a successful startup is a good idea, but most founders struggle to characterize the strength of their startup idea. As a result, many founders invest their time, money and effort only to build something nobody cares about. If only founders could get a specific, actionable signal sooner.
To overcome this challenge, Nascent methodology enables founders to evaluate data from discovery interviews and quantify a startup idea in dollars ($). Ultimately, founders are able to decide within seconds whether to stop the project or continue iterating.
This workshop is ideal for founders of startups with no customers (i.e., idea-stage startups). You'll walk through a case study of a founder who applied Nascent methodology to their startup idea. If you find the methodology compelling, then you can join our January cohort and apply it to your own startup idea.
In this workshop, we'll use a case study to teach you to:
- Identify People in Pain — potential customers who are actively struggling with a problem
- Quantify the Pain in Dollars ($) — to assess how much value you could create by solving the problem
- Avoid wasting time on ideas that are unlikely to be successful
- Make decisions with minimal data (i.e., despite having few or no customers)

Cory Doctorow at Powells Books
Roll back
| description |

new book from Cory Doctorow: Enshittification
Enshittification: it's not just you — the internet sucks now. Here's why, and here's how we can disenshittify it. We're living through the Enshittocene, the Great Enshittening, a time in which the services that matter to us, that we rely on, are turning into giant piles of shit. It's frustrating. Demoralizing. Even terrifying. Enshittification (MCD) identifies the problem and proposes a solution. When Cory Doctorow coined the term enshittification, he was not just finding a funner way to say "things are getting worse." He was making a specific diagnosis about the state of the digital world and how it is affecting all of our lives (and not for the better). The once-glorious internet was colonized by platforms that made all-but-magical promises to their users — and, at least initially, seemed to deliver on them. But once users were locked in, the platforms turned on them to make their business customers happy. Then the platforms turned to abusing their business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. In the end, the platforms die. Doctorow's argument clearly resonated. Once named, it became obvious that enshittification is everywhere, so much so that the American Dialect Society named it its 2023 Word of the Year, and was cited as an inspiration for the 2025 season of Black Mirror. Here, now, in Enshittification the book, Doctorow moves the conversation beyond the overwhelming sense of our inevitably enshittified fate. He shows us the specific decisions that led us here, who made them, and — most important — how they can be undone.

An Upstart Collective Lunch and Learn event (free to all Portland entrepreneurs and founders, just bring your own lunch)
The Stoic Startup: Building Unbreakable Companies from the Inside Out
What if the secret to startup resilience isn't found in market analysis or funding rounds, but in ancient philosophy?
Most entrepreneurs obsess over the externals: What product to build? Which market to enter? How much can we charge? Where's the funding? They architect business models and competitive strategies, yet overlook the most critical design decision of all—what kind of company they're actually creating.

Legendary Lunch Networking #1: Retrain The Funk Out Of Portland
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Overview
Legendary Lunch #1: Reclaim Portland. Retrain Portland.
If you’re unemployed, underemployed, or just ready to stop waiting for Portland to come back—join us.
AI isn’t a career killer. Fear is.
Let’s rebuild community, confidence, and creativity—one lunch at a time.
Why This Matters
Portland’s energy used to be legendary—builders, dreamers, tinkerers meeting over sandwiches and big ideas. Somewhere along the way, that spark faded. Now, in what I call the Great Portland Downturn, we have a chance to get it back.
This isn’t another networking event. It’s a revival—a working lunch for people who want to build, adapt, and reconnect. Whether you’re looking for a job, plotting a pivot, or trying to make sense of AI’s impact on your work, this is for you.
What to Expect
Real talks, no fluff. Fast, practical sessions on AI, the future of work, and what’s actually next.
Unconference format. From 1:30–3:30 PM, you lead the conversations—lightning talks, birds-of-a-feather groups, soapboxes.
Actual community. No recruiters or empty pitches. Just people helping people get unstuck and move forward.
Sample Sessions
Using AI to scale your job search – find better opportunities, faster
How to prepare before layoffs hit – use adrenaline and AI to stay ahead
Why liberal arts are the hidden power skill of the AI age
English as the new programming language – communicate, think in systems, and get results without coding
Agentic and code-swarming workflows – what’s emerging at Nedspace right now
Staying sane while job-hunting with AI – practical mental health tools
AND MORE COMING EACH DAY.....
Want to speak or host a group? Great. Submit your idea—you’ll get a 30-minute slot.
(And yes, no commercial talks unless they clearly add value to the community.)
Who We Are
My name is Surj Patel, and along with my ally Shaan Kirpalani, we’re determined to make Portland network like it used to—and care like it used to. With help from Faris Mubarak and Nedspace, we’re hosting this series as part of our mission to retrain, reconnect, and reignite the city’s creative core.
The Spirit
You don’t need to learn Python or become a Stanford-trained prompt whisperer. You need discipline, common sense, and systems thinking.
AI doesn’t make you someone else—it amplifies who you already are.
Let’s make sure it amplifies the best parts of us.
This is where Portland’s comeback begins. Greatness isn’t given—it’s built. Together.
Hosted by NEOU at Nedspace, downtown Portland’s entrepreneurial hub.
Free admission with BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) or paid tickets include a catered meal.
FREE. FOCUSED. FUN. FAST FORWARD.
(We welcome more collaborations , reach out by signing up) |

Product discovery is where great products are born - it's the systematic process of understanding what your market truly needs before you commit resources to building it. We'll explore research methodologies, customer interview techniques, and validation frameworks that reveal genuine insights. Companies with strong discovery programs see nearly 2x ROI. You'll gain practical skills for conducting meaningful customer conversations, interpreting feedback accurately, and translating insights into confident product decisions.
You'll also learn the art of product storytelling for your pitch deck, positioning, sales, marketing and stakeholder alignment.
ProductTheory.io workshop series at Kiln:
There’s one challenge all founders have in common, especially in 2025. It’s achieving product market fit.
This free workshop series at Kiln is based on ProductTheory’s celebrated Product-Market Fit Canvas: a framework for ensuring smart, data-driven product development and market strategy.
Open to both Kiln members and the broader entrepreneurial community. Non-members get a free day pass to Kiln with their participation.
Why This Series Matters: Dr. Ali Maaxa brings 20 years of experience from Big Tech innovation teams to zero-to-one product launches. Her frameworks have supported successful launches for AWS, Recreation.gov, and numerous startups navigating the path from concept to revenue. These sessions offer practical, field-tested approaches to the challenges every founder faces.

Dorkbot: Spooky October Edition
Roll back
| description |

Along with the variety of spooky DIY projects that are sure to show up this month, we're continuing our new series of quick talks in the midst of the usual free-flowing chaos. This month's talk is by Jonathan Moore:
*"Half again as much means twice the fun!"* -
Up until the 20 nm process node—the end of the planar-transistor era—the cost per transistor was halving on a regular cadence. Historically, we’ve used that bounty to boost CPU capabilities, but it also meant we could design CPUs that cost half as much. This talk explores that path: what’s happened with cheap CPUs/MCUs and what it might mean for hackers and open hardware.
People doing strange things with electricity!
DorkbotPDX is a relaxed, informal show-and-tell for electronic artists, circuit designers, microcontroller programmers, retro computing enthusiasts, video game designers, digital archaeologists, and mod synth gearheads in Portland, Oregon.
Bring your electronic wonders, monsters, and works-in-progress for others to see, or come see what others have been working on! Whether it's code or circuits, electronic creativity of all sorts is welcome here.
Table space with power will be available for project show-and-tell; we'll have a table for drinks and snacks, feel free to contribute to the communal cache/BYOB. The Free cart is back, take or leave some components (don’t leave TOO much, if you have big stuff, maybe check the Discord/mailing list to see if anyone is interested in taking it first!)

* Time: 06:00 PM to 09:00 PM US/Pacific
* Location: Lucky Labrador Beer Hall, 1945 NW Quimby St, Portland, Oregon 97209 US
Come enjoy a beverage and chat with other people who are interested in the

Look for a table with the plush Tux penguin. Hopefully it will be nice enough
to be outside. Otherwise, look for a table inside. |

That PLUG Clinic you like is coming back into style!
The PLUG Clinic returns again this month on October 19th, from 1pm-5pm, at Willamette University's space on the 2nd floor of the Ecotrust Building. If you need help with your Linux computer, or want to offer help, you are welcome!
Volunteer helpers are as desirable as helpees. Helping is fun and rewarding. If you've ever helped out at a PLUG Clinic before, come checkout the space!
Thank you Willamette University, for hosting us! |

The Willamette University space is on the second floor. You may enter the building through the Hot Lips Pizza, facing the parking lot adjacent to 10th Avenue. The stairway to the 2nd floor is gated, but that should be unlocked (if not, look for a PLUG notice with a Penguin and a phone number you can SMS to get let in). The elevator should work. The off-street parking adjacent to 10th Avenue is "open to the public on weekends", but probably safest to pick the slots marked Guest, if available.
Optionally, pizza is available on premises, other food options are available nearby. |
