Learn About the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) and Record Requests!
Roll back

*** Note: This meeting starts at 6:30 PM, later than our normal time. Doors will be monitored for access until 6:40 PM. If you arrive after that time, please post a note to the meeting page on Meetup, and we'll work to respond and let you in. ***
Reporters regularly bring us breaking news about government activities, including acts of malfeasance. They, of course, get tips from sources but also rely greatly on information found in public records requests. The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) was enacted in 1966 to make government more transparent so journalists and the general public could hold the government accountable for its actions.
Surprisingly, though, the news media accounts for less than 10% of all FOIA requests![1] The largest three categories of requestors are businesses, individuals, and law firms, but other groups, such as universities and non-profits, also file requests.
The basic purpose of the act is to ensure an informed citizenry, which is vital to the functioning of a democratic society. While FOIA only applies to federal records, each state has its own laws and processes related to public records, and Oregon is no exception.
Getting started in submitting public records requests can be intimidating. What exactly is a public record, and how does an individual request one? Are there fees involved? What options are available if a request is denied?
The people at Lucy Parsons Labs have filed many requests for records, uncovering corruption and other wrongdoing in the Chicago area, and are willing to share their experiences and expertise with us! At this meeting, LPL's Community Organizing Chair will speak to us via teleconference and share tools and tips for submitting requests so we can keep government agencies both transparent and accountable to the people.
Join us for a great presentation and discussion about FOIA and public records requests! We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking afterwards. We hope to see you there!
Schedule:
6:20 PM: Doors
6:30 PM: Introductions
6:35 PM: Presentation

Portland OWASP Chapter Meeting: Overcoming Your Greatest InfoSec Adversary: You!
Roll back

Tips on formulating complete sentences without acronyms, learning to pretend you aren't the smartest person in the room, choosing the right animations for your PowerPoint presentations, and more! Let's be honest, you probably didn't get into info-sec because of your love for public speaking, your mastery of written and verbal communication, or your highly-tuned social skills! Regardless, these things are key to your success or failure in info-sec. Dare to join me for a frank if somewhat tongue-in-cheek conversation regarding strategies for simplifying complex conversations, recognizing and overcoming common communication obstacles, translating leet-speak to business language and creating effective visual presentations.
Speaker:
Patterson Cake
Patterson has been in information technology for over 20 years, focusing on security for the past several years in offensive, defensive and leadership roles. He is the founder of Haven Information Security, an instructor for SANS, and the Principal Cybersecurity Engineer for PeaceHealth. |

Quantifying Emotion
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Translating human emotions into the language of neurons is one of the fundamental challenges in affective neuroscience and critical for understanding the neuronal basis of many mental illnesses. But we currently have no quantitative understanding of how emotions emerge from the activity of neural networks in the brain. Capturing the essence of emotions with computational methods might seem like an oxymoron given lay conceptions of emotions as irrational forces that inflexibly bias behavior away from rationality. However, it is increasingly clear that the neural circuits mediating emotion and decision making are highly intertwined. After decades of research suggesting the amygdala mainly contributes to emotion and simpler forms of associative learning, researchers are just beginning to explore the computational boundaries of amygdala function. The emerging perspective, which Dr. Costa will discuss, is that the computational goals of emotional circuits in the brain are much richer than simply identifying things as good or bad.
Dr. Vinny Costa is an assistant professor in Department of Behavioral Neuroscience and in the Division of Neuroscience of the with the Oregon National Primate Research Center. Dr. Costa's research is focused on using computational approaches from reinforcement learning and decision making to understand the function of the mesolimbic circuits in emotion, cognition, and disease. To do this he takes a multidisciplinary approach combining computational modeling of behavior, neurophysiology, neuroimaging, psychopharmacology, and chemogenetic methodologies in rhesus macaques and humans. |

BikeLoudPDX Mapping/Reporting Hack Night N
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Join grassroots bicycle advocates and open data / open government / open code folks to work on collaborative mapping and resolution of transportation safety issues. Everyone is welcome whether you have years of programming / tech experience or just a few pictures of dirty bike lanes and broken sidewalks. We'll look at pdxreporter, 823-safe data, and other public data (orcycle, nearlykilled.me, etc.) Look for some "activists" with computers or just shout "did anyone here report a pothole?" Joint meeting with Portland Perl Mongers. |

This highly interactive, instructor-led simulation is a high-impact, energetic way to accelerate understanding, involvement, and acceptance of DevOps and Agile, Lean, ITIL® best practice in your organization. It helps accelerate the adoption of DevOps across the enterprise, while successfully turning DevOps opponents into advocates. By helping to clearly communicate the DevOps case for change, it creates shared understanding and commitment towards Development and Operations working together as a high-performing team. This unique experiential learning approach causes breakthrough understanding and transforms learning into an engaging, fun, and memorable shared experience.

Thursdays are open house night here at CTRL-H. Jon and Melinda are available during this time to give guided tours, answer questions and show you all that the hackerspace has to offer.
We don't have an opening ceremony or any formal meeting. This is a time for you to eavesdrop on other peoples projects and get support on a project that you may need help with. Bring your laptop, projects, inventions, your technical toys and your broken microwave to CTRL-H and hack with friends. |

PDX Exploit Workshop
Roll back

Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?
PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!
We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.
This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.
p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you! |

Open Hack Night!
Roll back
| description |

Every Second Friday is Open Hack Night here at ^H. Come hangout with us at the most happening (and productive) place in town! Hackerspace activities encompass Hardware, Software, Crafting/Textiles, all the Realities (Real, Virtual and Augmented), Infosec, Audio/Video, Cryptocurrencies, Gaming, you name it - if it's technology then it's in scope. Our Hackerspace is a place where people with an interest in computing or technology can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. There is plenty of table space, bandwidth and 3D printers (for those looking to try that out). Bring your ideas, works in progress, or something to show off. We'll see you there! |
