SAOpdx: Software-Cluster Roundtable with PDC (Session 4)
Roll back
description |
Please join us at software Industry Roundtable discussion! As a leader in the software industry, your perspective on Portlandâs strengths and challenges, specifically for this industry, are of critical interest to the city of Portland and its partners as we begin the implementation of the cityâs newly-adopted Economic Development Strategy.
The Strategy, which was approved by City Council in July 2009, emphasizes job creation and business competitiveness as the path to a sustainable economy, and identifies four industry clusters where the Portland Development Commission (PDC) will concentrate time, talent and resources to meet the Strategyâs goal of 10,000 net new jobs in the city of Portland in the next five years.
We are in the process of gathering intelligence on Portlandâs software sector and trying to identify opportunities for growing the cluster. The PDC and the Software Association of Oregon (SAO) are collaborating on a series of software industry round tables to help guide the development of this important industry cluster. Your participation in one of these discussions would be invaluable in advancing the understanding of industry needs. |

How to Lie Like a Geek
speaker: Michael Schwern
Geeks have a special relationship with The Truth. Nothing is more important than correcting a falsehood, no matter how small, and nothing is more odious than not telling The Truth. Unfortunately, in speaking The Whole Truth and Nothing But The Truth, the meaning is often mangled and the end result is the opposite, a lie.
Weâll examine some ways geeks lie while telling The Truth, to themselves and to others, and hopefully achieve better communications, easier to understand interfaces and maybe some personal enlightenment.
Some examples include: Lies by omission, lies by precision, lies by irrelevancy, lies by design, lies with statistics and that most
dangerous of words âshouldâ as in âthe user should have realizedâ.
There will be cake.

Galois Tech Seminar

description |
The next Galois Tech Talk will be delivered by Amit Goel. Come kick off 2010 with us!
Title: Ground Interpolation for Combined Theories
Abstract: We give a method for modular generation of ground interpolants in modern SMT solvers supporting multiple theories. Our method uses a novel algorithm to modify the proof tree obtained from an unsatifiability run of the solver into a proof tree without occurrences of troublesome âuncolorableâ literals. An interpolant can then be readily generated using existing procedures. The principal advantage of our method is that it places few restrictions (none for convex theories) on the search strategy of the solver. Consequently, it is straightforward to implement and enables more efficient interpolating SMT solvers. In the presence of non-convex theories our method is incomplete, but still more general than previous methods.

At its core, BPM is a management discipline. While the vendor landscape is dominated by fancy methodologies and flashy technologies, it's the people inside an organization which really make or break process management. This discussion will introduce the set of specialized process roles found on the Org Charts of companies most successful in implementing and sustaining BPM.
Denis Lee is an independent Business Architect and Business Process Management Consultant. He serves on the board of both ABPMP International and ABPMP Portland.

Saturday Academy inspires young people to explore their world through hands-on learning with community experts and professionals. Our goal is to reinforce the joy of learning, assist young people in developing intellectually and help them prepare for rewarding careers. We strive to make our experiences available to all students who seek them and to affirmatively reach out to those who might not otherwise participate. We value all learning and offer experiences in many disciplines, but emphasize the sciences, especially engineering, technology, and health sciences, because of the rapid rate of change in these fields and their essential role in modern life. We accomplish this by offering classes, camps, and internships for 2nd-12th grade students in topics like creative writing, nanotechnology, marine biology, art, engineering, and much more. |

CHIFOO 2010 Program Series: Scott Berkun, "Confessions of a Public Speaker"
Roll back
description |
5pm - CHIFOOd - Join us for dinner before the talk across the street from the Art Institute at Deschutes Brewery
6:30pm - Networking starts at the Art Institute
7:00pm - Presentation Starts
<b>Scott Berkun, "Confessions of a Public Speaker"</b>
If you ever wonder why your wonderful ideas rarely get accepted or are compromised beyond recognition in meeting after meeting, it might not be your creative design talents that are the problem. It could be your ability to frame, shape, and pitch your ideas effectively to others. This fun, brutally honest talk, loosely based on the OâReilly book <i>Confessions of a Public Speaker</i>, will give you everything you need to know to present, pitch, and sell your ideas so your world domination plans can begin.
In addition to the CHIFOO event, Scott Berkun will be making the following public appearances:
January 6, 9am - The AM Northwest television show on KATU Channel 2
He will also be in the Primetime show, which airs at 7pm on Channel 2.2 (without cable), Channel 302 if you have Comcast cable, or 464 on Verizon FIOS.
(First Thursday!) January 7, 7pm. Burnside Powellâs City of Books - Book Signing for âConfessions of a Public Speaker.â This is a free event.
<b>About Scott Berkun:</b>
Scott Berkun is the bestselling author of <i>Making Things Happen</i> and <i>The Myths of Innovation.</i> His work as a writer and public speaker has appeared in the Washington Post, New York Times, Wired Magazine, Fast Company, Forbes Magazine, and other media. He has taught creative thinking at the University of Washington and has been a regular commentator on CNBC, MSNBC, and National Public Radio. His many popular essays and entertaining lectures can be found for free on his blog at <a href="http://www.scottberkun.com">www.scottberkun.com</a>. |
