update Calagator::Event 1250457982 SAOpdx: Software-Cluster Roundtable with PDC (Session 4) Roll back

description Please join us at software Industry Roundtable discussion! As a leader in the software industry, your perspective on Portland’s strengths and challenges, specifically for this industry, are of critical interest to the city of Portland and its partners as we begin the implementation of the city’s newly-adopted Economic Development Strategy. The Strategy, which was approved by City Council in July 2009, emphasizes job creation and business competitiveness as the path to a sustainable economy, and identifies four industry clusters where the Portland Development Commission (PDC) will concentrate time, talent and resources to meet the Strategy’s goal of 10,000 net new jobs in the city of Portland in the next five years. We are in the process of gathering intelligence on Portland’s software sector and trying to identify opportunities for growing the cluster. The PDC and the Software Association of Oregon (SAO) are collaborating on a series of software industry round tables to help guide the development of this important industry cluster. Your participation in one of these discussions would be invaluable in advancing the understanding of industry needs. Please join us at software Industry Roundtable discussion! create Calagator::Event 1250458114 PDX.pm How to Lie Like a Geek [Michael Schwern] Roll back

description nil How to Lie Like a Geek speaker: Michael Schwern Geeks have a special relationship with The Truth. Nothing is more important than correcting a falsehood, no matter how small, and nothing is more odious than not telling The Truth. Unfortunately, in speaking The Whole Truth and Nothing But The Truth, the meaning is often mangled and the end result is the opposite, a lie. We’ll examine some ways geeks lie while telling The Truth, to themselves and to others, and hopefully achieve better communications, easier to understand interfaces and maybe some personal enlightenment. Some examples include: Lies by omission, lies by precision, lies by irrelevancy, lies by design, lies with statistics and that most dangerous of words “should” as in “the user should have realized”. There will be cake. http://tinyurl.com/mermtx As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the LuckyLab

update Calagator::Event 1250458113 Galois Tech Seminar Roll back

description The next Galois Tech Talk will be delivered by Amit Goel. Come kick off 2010 with us! Title: Ground Interpolation for Combined Theories Abstract: We give a method for modular generation of ground interpolants in modern SMT solvers supporting multiple theories. Our method uses a novel algorithm to modify the proof tree obtained from an unsatifiability run of the solver into a proof tree without occurrences of troublesome “uncolorable” literals. An interpolant can then be readily generated using existing procedures. The principal advantage of our method is that it places few restrictions (none for convex theories) on the search strategy of the solver. Consequently, it is straightforward to implement and enables more efficient interpolating SMT solvers. In the presence of non-convex theories our method is incomplete, but still more general than previous methods. * Date: Tuesday, 10:30am, 05 Jan 2010 * Time: 10:30am – 11:30am * Location: Galois, Inc. 421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300 (3rd floor of the Commonwealth Building) Portland, OR 97204 Bio: Amit Goel is a member of Intel’s Strategic CAD Labs. Our goal is to reinforce the joy of learning, assist young people in developing intellectually and help them prepare for rewarding careers. We strive to make our experiences available to all students who seek them and to affirmatively reach out to those who might not otherwise participate. We value all learning and offer experiences in many disciplines, but emphasize the sciences, especially engineering, technology, and health sciences, because of the rapid rate of change in these fields and their essential role in modern life. We accomplish this by offering classes, camps, and internships for 2nd-12th grade students in topics like creative writing, nanotechnology, marine biology, art, engineering, and much more.
