Roll back

We are slowly emerging from the worst financial crisis since the great depression. Providers of business capital, from Wall Street and commercial banks, to venture capital firms and strategic acquirers, are beginning to re-deploy funds that have remained relatively idle for the last 18 months. Are investors looking at their opportunities differently, or is it back to business as usual?
What will you learn?
- Are investors investing?
- Are lenders lending?
- What has changed?
- How do I approach a banker, a venture capitalist, a strategic partner?
- What should I expect to find?
- Who can help me?
Panelists:
- Clive Cook, Principal, CCSA, Inc. - As CXO, Clive has raised over $100 million in capital over the past 10 years. Clive has raised funds for early stage ventures as well as growth capital from private equity sources.
- Mike McConnell, Chief Financial Officer, Digimarc Corporation - Since 1979, Michael has served as a Chief Financial Officer, Vice President and/or treasurer at several private and public companies.
- Steve Buhaly, Chief Financial Officer, TriQuint Semiconductor - Mr. Buhaly has more than 20 years experience in finance and operations. In 2007 Steve joined TriQuint Semiconductor as Chief Financial Officer.

*Note* - this meeting is once again on the third Wednesday instead of the fourth, due to a conflict with Macworld.
We are going to try again to cover Xcode 4, with the assumption that there will be a stable preview or release available by January.
Please note that unless Xcode 4 has been publicly released by meeting time, you will need to be covered under the Apple NDA in order to attend this meeting. It's pretty easy to do; just join either the iPhone or Mac Developer Program. You can join for free, and it's a good thing to do anyway if you're doing this kind of work.
We will head out afterwards for beer and discussion. |

Fridays from 4pm-6pm+
Portland bloggers meet up at the Green Dragon to help each other with their blogs. Good times are had by all. |

The website says...
"Beer and Blog is about bloggers helping bloggers over beers. It is a meet up that takes place every Friday from 4pm until at least 6pm at the Green Dragon in Portland, OR. It started as a means to swap information among peers in the Portland tech scene. Now it has grown into a weekly happy hour for Portland area bloggers. Sometimes we work. Sometimes we discuss. Sometimes we go on a field trip. But we mostly play and celebrate the transition from the work week to the week end. It’s the kind of place that is fun to network in, kindle ideas into side projects, and announce a release."
... but it really has very little to do with blogging.

City Hall Meeting: Software Industry Summit
Roll back
| description |
Mayor Adams, the Software Association of Oregon and the Portland Development Commission cordially invites you to participate in the development of a key software cluster strategy for the Oregon/SW Washington region. By attending this informative meeting you will play an instrumental part in the process with other top business community leaders.
More:
The deal is: you show up, you get to help direct the resources dedicated to software industry development from the Portland Development Commission, the Mayorâs office and the Software Association of Oregon. Thatâs pretty much it. The people who go to this meeting are the folks who will be directing the future of the PDCâs âPortland Software Mandateâ, which is part of that whole industry âclusterâ initiative that targets active outware, advanced manufacturing, clean tech and software. More broadly, this is part of the 5-year plan to guide Portlandâs economic growth.
Anyway, you really should attend this meeting next Thursday. If you canât attend, see if you can get someone you know or a friend to attend on your behalf. Weâd want to pack city hall.
Thatâs right â weâre meeting in the City Council Chambers. Itâll be great. Please attend! It starts at 4:30pm and goes to 6:30pm. And, if you show up we can lead you over to a sweet afterparty. Seriously. Itâs gonna be awesome.
The initiatives being discussed are:
* Creating a Knowledge Network to support local user groups â group convened by Warren Harrison of PSU
* Developing a business mentorship network â group convened by SAOâs Matt Nees
* Enhancing a financing network â group convened by Gerald Baugh of the PDC |

Mayor Adams, the Software Association of Oregon and the Portland Development Commission cordially invites you to participate in the development of a key software cluster strategy for the Oregon/SW Washington region. By attending this informative meeting you will play an instrumental part in the process with other top business community leaders.
More:
The deal is: you show up, you get to help direct the resources dedicated to software industry development from the Portland Development Commission, the Mayor’s office and the Software Association of Oregon. That’s pretty much it. The people who go to this meeting are the folks who will be directing the future of the PDC’s “Portland Software Mandate”, which is part of that whole industry “cluster” initiative that targets active outware, advanced manufacturing, clean tech and software. More broadly, this is part of the 5-year plan to guide Portland’s economic growth.
Anyway, you really should attend this meeting next Thursday. If you can’t attend, see if you can get someone you know or a friend to attend on your behalf. We’d want to pack city hall.

We're meeting after the SAO day-long event,"Blurring the Lines between QA & Dev in an Agile Environment." Local Agilists will reflect on what we heard or said in presentations at the event, then we'll apply "personal kanban" to create table topic lists for the evening.
You don't have to have attended the SAO event to join us.
* If your business card says programmer, tester, project manager, product manager or coach (or would if you had one)
* If you use Agile methods, practices, principles or approaches
* If you seek opportunities to keep working for companies that prefer an Agile approach
* If you want to recruit team members who know how to work in an Agile environment
* If you're curious about any the above,
*Come on over.*
We welcome practitioners from all Agile-related frameworks--Scrum, XP, Adaptive, EVO, Lean, Kanban, Scrumban, Crystal, FDD, AUP, DSDM, etc. And people who want to learn about same. |

PDC Software Cluster Gathering [Rescheduled to 4/26]
Roll back
| description |
The PDC interview came up with 3 critical areas that impact software professionals:
1) Education
2) Political Engagement
3) Taxes & Fees
The goal of the meeting will be to break into small groups, read some of the written ideas from the online interview and brainstorm ways for the PDC to address these issues.
Each of the 3 groups will share with the larger group with the goal of reaching consensus around a few ideas for the PDC to pursue.
We'll then go out to the larger community with a second online interview to make sure that we're giving the PDC advice that reflects the entire region. |

Charles Mirho, an experienced Portland patent attorney, has volunteered to come speak to our group about IP on the web.
His presentation will focus on profiting from web innovation. This will be a talk about all of the ways a person can profit from innovation in web design, e-commerce, applications, etc. Patent protection is one aspect of it, but will not be the primary focus of this discussion.
Categorically, we will cover:
Web design – getting credit and keeping control
Applications – mitigating piracy
E-commerce – where the big money is... protection and funding
Bring your questions and, if you'd like, food or drink to share with the group. |

We Meet every 3rd Tuesday

Weâll start with a tech book swap. Most of us have a few tech manuals lying about that we never use, but that others would find useful. Many of us need a new tech book/s but have not yet picked one up, for one reason or another. Hereâs your chance to find unwanted books a good home, or to find a useful manual or three for yourself. Hereâs what happens: Those with unwanted books will bring them to the group and leave them in a common area. Then itâs just a matter of everyone helping themselves. You donât have to bring any manuals to leave with manuals, and vice versa. Books left over at the end will be taken to Powellâs Technical Books for their freebie bin, or possibly to Free Geek.

PDXRIA: Putting The Active Into Interactive
Roll back
| description |
Interactive is not a goal - it is a way of thinking and approaching problems. Though we have orders of magnitude more power at our fingertips, real interactivity is still illusive - but it need not be.
Interactive applications have been a multi-decade goal. Flex is yet another in a long history of frameworks for delivering interactive applications, but technology alone does not an interactive application make. You need to understand the problems, existing solutions and techniques for solving the problem, and the user of the application. Fast is never enough, because the complexity will grow until the app is not fast enough and pain limits what the user can do, underscoring the perception of your app - what the pain prevents me from doing vs. what the lack of pain enables me to do. Scaling is the name of the game - let's talk about bigger problems than you can imagine.
Speakers
Roy Hall has been writing interactive graphic applications for more than 30 years. Trained in civil engineering and architecture, he started writing 3D interactive apps for stadium roof design on E&S PSII's in the late 70's. He later wrote the rendering pipeline for Robert Abel and Associates (Tron - sucking Flynn into the computer and throwing him back out); was the system architect for Wavefront Technologies (Science and Technology Academy Award for that) - and which through many morphs is now the Maya animation software; was an Assistant Professor at Cornell's Program of Computer Graphics; wrote the 'Joey 3D toolkit' extensions for Microsoft MFC in the 90's; worked on the interaction model for Sketchup; and is now the CTO for Thetus Corporation. |

Frank Helle, CEO of Axian, Inc., will lead an interactive discussion about the art and science of negotiation. Attendees will learn how to leverage their instincts for more bargaining power when negotiating. Share with other CEOs your experiences, insights and frustrations from past transactions and gain strategies for more successful future outcomes.

OEN Webinar: Four Startup Risks for Venture Capital Companies, with Gerry Langeler
Roll back
| description |

The economy seems to be slowly recovering, and venture capitalists are slowly returning to fund new deals again. But what are they finding most interesting now? And what are the risks they are willing to take, versus those they aren't, in the aftermath of the recession and ten years of negative industry returns?
Gerry will take his historic "Four risks of venture capital startups" and bring it into focus for the coming years…
Speaker: Gerry Langeler, OVP Partners
Gerry Langeler joined OVP Venture Partners in 1992 and focuses on investments in the digital energy, software, imaging and digital biology sectors. His investments include Captivate Network, Carbonflow, Elekom, EnerG2, Foundstone, Max-Viz, Now Software, Portland Software, Preview Systems, Surplus Software, TView, Unify, Vascular Solutions, Viral Logic Systems Technology (VLST), and Webridge. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Carbonflow, Collaborative Software Initiative, EnerG2, GainSpan, Max-Viz, and Viral Logic Systems Technology (VLST) and is a Board Observer to DataSphere, Serus and Tigo Energy.
Prior to joining OVP, Gerry was co-founder of Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) in Portland, OR in 1981. There he served as President, and over eleven years helped lead Mentor through its IPO to over $400M in worldwide sales and over $1B in market capitalization. He began his technology career at Tektronix.
Gerry received his AB in Chemistry from Cornell University and his MBA from Harvard University. He is the author of The Vision Trap (Harvard Business Review, 3/92). He also authored a chapter in Venture Capital Best Practices (Aspatore Books, 2005). Gerry serves on the Advisory Board of Highway 12 Ventures in Boise, Idaho.
He is the father of two boys, and enjoys skiing (when his knees can stand it) and golf. |
