Inspiration 2 - The Force Behind Innovation
This is the second event in our Inspiration series based on the concept that inspiration is the bedrock of all entrepreneurial endeavors. Entrepreneurship requires several elements - inspiration, innovation and sound business strategy. Hard work is essential, but for most successful endeavors inspiration is the key. What is the source of that inspiration? How do you find that spark that drives creativity? Meet two serial entrepreneurs who have been there and done that and now serve as mentors in the community.
Srivats Sampath is the founder and CEO of McAfee.com where he pioneered the concept of subscription-based, SaaS services. Prior to moving to the Bay Area, he lived in Portland, serving in Executive-level positions at companies such as Intel and Central Point Software.
Vish Mishra, a 'Mentor Capitalist' with Clearstone Ventures, is a serial entrepreneur with several successful ventures. He was a Co-founder of Excelan (sold to Novell), founder of Telera and CEO of four other start-ups. He is also the President of TiE Sillicon Valley.
Listen to the inspiring stories of these two innovative thinkers, network with other entrepreneurs, charter members and technology leaders at a reception sponsored by Tonkon Torp.
The event will be moderated by Nitin Khanna CEO, MergerTech
Fee - Online: Members $15, Guests $25, Full-time Students $10 +$5 at the door. |

Pitch Club
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
**Please note new start time of 6pm - Show up by 6 so we can get this shit kicked off. Hard stop at 8pm; networkers/heavy drinkers/people who don't want to go home can take it to the bar after that.**
Want to practice your startup pitch in front of people who've done it before? Crave the harsh criticism of your peers? Need the validation of seeing what works and what doesn't in other pitches?
Bring your 3 minute pitch. Put your name in a hat and if it gets picked, you're on. Powerpoints discouraged - just pitch. Then, answer questions and listen to painfully honest feedback from a panel of so-called experts.
The first rule of Pitch Club is you HAVE TO PITCH.
The second rule of Pitch Club is you HAVE TO PITCH. It doesn't have to be your startup - pitch your blog, your ideas for turning cat feces into gold, or your plan for world domination.
More rules as we think of them.
FAQ:
Q: Who are these so-called experts and what are they going to do to me?
A: Your pitch will be evaluated by tech entrepreneurs and people who pitch for a living. They are your superiors.
Q: What about NDAs? Someone's going to steal my idea!
A: There are no NDAs - use your best judgment about what to talk about and what not to. Also, remember the first rule of fight club - don't talk about fight club. We're all on the honor system here.
Q: My pitch is more than 3 minutes - can I have more time?
A: No.
Q: Will it be catered?
A: Hell no. You know what's in the lobster bisque.
Q: Can anyone critique a pitch?
A: No, only the panel. |

Sizing and Prioritizing Stories â a Visual Approach to Cost/Benefit Analysis [Rose City SPIN talk]
Roll back
| description |
This is a free talk sponsored by the Rose City SPIN.
Networking starts at 5:00 PM
Talk starts at 6:00 PM

Abstract

Between three different sessions at the Agile Open Northwest 2008, the author and another software professional developed a cost/benefit charting scheme that:

enables development teams and customers to prioritize features,

identifies features that should be a. quashed, b. pursued, or c. further decomposed, and

allows stakeholders to monitor and manage priorities during a project.

This quick collaboration produced a diagramming technique that can be used in Agile shops and in shops using more traditional methods. The chart is a basic Cartesian plane with Cost (Points) on the x-axis, Value on the y-axis, and something other than dots at the intersections. We call this technique Analyze This as it focuses analysis where it is needed.

Speaker Bio

A quality evangelist at McAfee, Ian is a veteran software developer, quality assurance engineer, and manager with experience in the manufacturing, financial services, construction estimating, and security domains. For more than 30 years he has worked to improve productivity and software quality through rigorous development methods and now through the pragmatic application of Agile methods.
Ian serves on the Software Association of Oregonâs board and Program Committee. He co-founded and serves on SAOâs QA Forum committee and the Central Oregon chapter board. He also serves on the boards of Agile Open Northwest and Agile PDX. He is a member and supporter of the Agile Alliance and has served PNSQC in various capacities (think: free pizza). Earlier he contributed to American Society for Qualityâs certification program for software quality engineers and was among the first to earn ASQâs CSQE.

The Software Summit in December was a milestone event to chart the course of a strategic plan aimed at helping the Software Cluster thrive. At that event, we announced the formation of three networks in response to industry feedback. On Wednesday April 6, 2011, you are invited to attend a reception where we will launch another significant new initiative that will drive economic development within the Software cluster: the Portland 100. Please join me and many of your industry peers as Nitin Khanna, CEO of MergerTech and former CEO and founder of Saber, rolls out the program. The program will also include a recap of the PDX11 Unconference and Hackathon at Portland State University April 1-2 and a brief update on progress of our various networks.

Failures, Conjectures & Closure: a Very Special UpdatePDX Evening
Roll back

Please RSVP on the Meetup site if you plan to attend.
Please join us on Monday April 4th for a very special UpdatePDX session at PIE, with guest speakers from down the block, up the coast & around the world. This evening will try to take a step back to talk about the recent changes in the data & distributed systems worlds. The program is as follows.
Guests:
Sarah Novotny, Blue Gecko
Alex Payne, BankSimple
Bradford Stephens, Drawn to Scale
Tim Anglade, Cloudant
Act 1: Failing
Our guests share their shame, as they tell the tale an IT failure they were personally involved in.
Act 2: Making Sense
Tim Anglade recaps the state, level & tenor of the database discussion, drawing from the fourty interviews he conducted with vendors, deployers & cool dudes for the NOSQL Tapes. He'll cover the disjointed but slowly converging technical efforts, the confusing marketing talk, the ill-advised attempts and emerging lessons from NOSQL & beyond.
Act 3: Building
Our guests put on the ascott, dust off their snifters, grab a leather chair and join Tim for a fireside chat about what it means to use & build complex data systems today. From the pitfalls to avoid, to the rules you can live by, all drawn from their current experiences building & maintaining large data systems.

Roll back

Abstract:
The Free Software Movement campaigns for computer users' freedom to cooperate and control their own computing. The Free Software Movement developed the GNU operating system, typically used with the Linux kernel, specifically to make these freedoms possible.
The Portland State University Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Computer Science Department are proud to welcome Richard Stallman to PSU for this general-interest talk. Mr. Stallman is the father of the free software movement and the concept of 'copyleft', the original author of GNU Emacs, the GNU Compiler Collection, and many of the utilities used in the GNU/Linux operating system.
This event is free and open to the general public. Mr. Stallman will be available for a brief Q&A session following the talk.

CIvicApps Hackathon - Mobile Apps Education
Roll back

There are a number of people and companies in Portland who are building textbook applications, teaching tools and other mobile resources, and there is even more of an interest. In August 2010, Mobile Portland's Mobile in Education event drew almost 100 people http://mobileportland.com/recaps/mobile-education-recap.
In partnership with the City of Portland, Webvisions and the Mayor's Office, we're honored to announce a hackathon dedicated exclusively to making mobile applications for education. There will be time in the morning for ideas and presentations from educators involved with the city, and brainstorming sessions and hacking in the afternoon.
Mobile developers, graphic and UX designers, educators and students are very welcome. Teams will have a chance to present their projects at 8Pm and will be judged by members of the City of Portland, Education District and local tech leaders. The three top projects will be automatically entered into the Webvisionary Awards in the Mobile Category.
CivicApps will be kindly sponsoring lunch, and we are looking for sponsors for breakfast and dinner. Please contact @caseorganic if you're interested in sponsoring. Come change the future of education! |
