update Calagator::Event 1250463717 AgilePDX Westside (morning) - Agile Portfolio Management – From Vision to Backlog Roll back

description Agile Portfolio Management – From Vision to Backlog The enterprise is going to invest in a new product or service: it’s on the strategic plan, senior management is energized and the funding has been promised… But what happens next? How do you get from vision to value? How do you drill down from a high level mission statement or market opportunity to the right user stories and how do you manage resource allocation with competing projects? The goal of this session is to explore this critical transition and it’s implication for portfolio management. We are pleased to welcome three panelists to help us answer these questions. Panel Members: Jamie Swails, Manager Network Data Operations, Portland General Electric Pat Pesetti, Sr. Director Engineering, Tripwire Adam Light, Management Consultant, SoTech Advisors Meeting will start at 7:45 AM until 8:55 Agile Portfolio Management – From Vision to Backlog The enterprise is going to invest in a new product or service: it’s on the strategic plan, senior management is energized and the funding has been promised… But what happens next? create Calagator::Event 1250463783 Galois Tech Talk: Inferring Phylogenies Using Evolutionary Algorithms Roll back

description nil Presented by Erlend Hamberg. An important problem in genetics is phylogenetic inference: Coming up with good hypotheses for the evolutionary relationship between species – usually represented as a “family tree”. As the amount of molecular data (e.g. DNA sequences) quickly grows, efficient algorithms become increasingly important to analyze this data. A maximum-likelihood approach with models for nucleotide evolution allows us to use all the sequence data, but is a computationally expensive approach. The number of possible trees also grows rapidly as we include more species. It is therefore necessary to use heuristic search methods to find good hypotheses for the “true” tree. Evolutionary algorithms (EA) is a class of such search/optimization algorithms that has been shown to perform well in other areas where the search space is large and irregular. I will explain my approach and my findings from using an evolutionary algorithm for inferring phylogenies from molecular data.

update Calagator::Event 1250463553 CHIFOO Presents: Experiential Make-overs: Transforming “Killing time” into “Making Memories” Roll back

description Life is precious. Why waste it? Every moment counts! Experiential venues from theme parks to museums, schools, shopping centers and even hospitals are re-designing their experiences by transforming everyday activities into making memories for a lifetime. How much of our lives are robbed by killing time for the next teller, the doctor, tires being changed, waiting for a table or that 4 minute thrill ride? Christopher Stapleton discusses how his applied research firm, Simiosys, conducts Experiential Make-overs to assess, design and test novel entertainment alternatives that give venues that extra kick. His collaboration with academic, commercial and civic institutions has challenged him to quantify and qualify the elusive “Wow factor,” in appealing to mainstream audiences. He will share his approach and tools that can apply to human factor design. About the Speaker Christopher Stapleton (@MixingRealities) is a Creative Venture Catalyst for Simiosys.com, Real World Laboratory. He has been consulting, designing, prototyping and delivering innovative experiences for organizations such as Disney, Universal, Nickelodeon, Sanrio & Paramount Parks leveraging experiential research collaborations with Canon Inc., Technical University of Munich and University of Central Florida funded by agencies such as NASA, NSF and the Departments of Education and Defense. He is the Founding Director of the Media Convergence Lab at the Institute for Simulation and Training, Founding President of the Rural Heritage Center and a founding faculty member of the University of Central Florida Digital Media Program. He has served as chair on the conference committees for ACM/Siggraph, IEEE/ISMAR and IEEE/VR. Mr. Stapleton received his start working on Broadway and designing for film, TV and computer graphics in New York City where he earned his Master of Fine Arts in design for theater and film at the New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. create Calagator::Event 1250463780 PDXCloud Roll back

description nil One of the top challenges of developing web-based services is building the continuous deployment process. Engineering teams spend over 30% of their developer resources building processes like “Deploy my app to Heroku from Github when I say 'deploy' in HipChat”. Most of this time is spent gluing together numerous services (e.g. Github, AWS, Hipchat) and technologies (e.g. Chef, Salt Stack) to work in a cohesive workflow. Maciej Skierkowski, co-founder and CEO of Factor, will show how you can automate your continuous integration and deployment processes in just a couple minutes. If you're thinking about moving to cloud-based development and deployment, or if you're just getting started with it, you'll find a lot of useful material here. If you're a cloud veteran, please come and contribute your experience to the discussion. WHEN: Wednesday, March 13th. Doors at 6:30pm, presentation starts at 7pm. There will be lots of pizza and beer so come hungry and thirsty. RSVP on Plancast: http://plancast.com/p/h2k0 OR Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/PDXCloud/events/107970162/ Contact Christine @ [email protected] for more information

description nil We're throwing a big hackathon to showcase a bunch of new Esri tools! Come be some of the first to check out new and improved documentation, user interface and new SDKs and APIs for Esri's core technology. New to Esri? Basically, you can do anything add any kind of geo-functionality any product or app you're working on. From maps and data, geocoding and routing, demographic data and more, you'll be able to check out and test work from Esri R&D Center Portland and Esri HQ in Redlands! There will be plenty of free food and drink, and networking kickoff the night before. Teams will have Friday night until 6pm Sunday to build apps using Esri technology. We'll have sample code on Github and a ton of example projects. There will also be plenty of Esri devs on site to help out. ##Who should attend? Feel free to participate if you're a designer or developer, college student, professional, high school student or someone just interested in geo. Keep in mind that this is a developer hackathon, so you should arrive with at least some knowledge of HTML/CSS so that you can contribute to a team. If you don't know HTML/CSS but are a skilled graphic designer, we need you too! Think of it as a playground for trying new things out. ##What kind of prizes will there be? Prizes will be announced soon, but suffice it to say they will likely be interesting objects that fly through the air. Also, free conference tickets and Esri software credits for runner ups.

description The Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics meeting flashrd+nsh: OpenBSD imaging and easy configuration for network appliances and virtual environments Installation, upgrade and configuration are important, practical functions. OpenBSD's reputation for advanced networking functionality is second only to its reputation for having a tight knit development community which considers these functions first and foremost a convenience for developers. In this session, we'll discuss the use and application of the flashrd and nsh tools for creating networking system images catered to deployment by IT staff, consultants and OEMs. We'll also discuss OpenBSD networking features and applications that can be instrumented by nsh, and discuss any general OpenBSD features and history, as desired by you, the participants. Chris Cappuccio is a systems and network architect, with 16 years of experience starting as a Unix system administrator, followed up with extensive IP, DSL, wireless and SS7 network deployment and operation. Chris owns and operates Yellowknife, a wireless network provider covering thousands of square miles of unserved and underserved areas with high performance Internet access. He has been a part-time contributor to networking and driver services in the OpenBSD operating system for 14 years. Many will head to the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne after the meeting.
