create Calagator::Event 1250464945 PDX Big Data Discussion Group Roll back

description nil "No talks. You may opt to take up to 60 seconds to complain about Big Data. One paper per month, no obligation to read it." We'll start by letting anyone who wants to take up to a minute to tell us what they've been doing with data lately. This month's paper is [Computational Methods for Dynamic Graphs](http://www2.research.att.com/~volinsky/papers/cpv.ps) by Cortes, Pregibon, and Volinsky. Read it or don't - the goal is just to have something to start conversations. "Did you read the paper?" will do nicely. Mention @PDXBigData on Twitter with the link to the full paper to suggest papers for future sessions.

description This workshop is a 10 hour movement intensive, presented over two consecutive days. You will learn to use the techniques and insights of theater and dance to discover new ways to find and expand your center. You do not need to be a performer; you only need to be committed to expanding your choice of creative movement through the discovery of your true core. Dates: October 5th & 6th, 2013 Time: 11am- 4pm each day Location: Lightbox Kulturhaus, 2027 NE MLK Blvd, Portland (enter through glass doors, behind Tiny's Coffee) Cost: $111 Spaces are limited so register soon! Instructor: Jacob Mooney This workshop is for actors, dancers, musicians, and anyone who wants to express themselves more fully and freely. We will draw from physical theater, butoh, clown, modern dance, and myth. We will cultivate presence, awareness and potency in both our performances and in our lives. Jacob is an actor, dancer, clown and stilt performer. He has studied with Lume Theater in Brazil, Smascherati clown theater in Italy, Yumiko Yoshioka of butoh dance company Ten Pen CHii. Jacob has also trained and performed with the International Theater Collective, Berlin- based Grotest Maru, and the Carpet Bag Brigade stilt theater company. create Calagator::Event 1250464933 ACM Tech Talk: Connecting Android to MySQL: An Interactive Tutorial Roll back

description nil In this talk, we will cover the basics of how to connect an Android device to a MySQL database. The technique used is adaptable to any database server (SQL Server, PostGRES, etc...) As you probably know, Android does not have a built in functionality to access remote databases, instead it uses SQLLite, a flat file system. However, using Java EE 7 and a simple PHP connectivity script, it is practically trivial to do the basic CRUD operations on a remotely hosted database. Bring a laptop with Java 7 and Android SDK with Eclipse installed, and get ready to code. Or just bring yourself, and a sheet will be passed to have the connection code EMAILED to you after the venue. About the speaker: Sean Walsh (aka Azadi) is the current vice chair of the Portland State Chapter of the ACM. Sean is currently finishing his Bachelor's of Computer Science with a Mathematics Minor at Portland State University, and has industry experience with deploying mobile apps for Android.

create Calagator::Event 1250464931 Mobile Portland: When Responsive Web Design Meets the Real World Roll back

description nil Why are so many responsive web designs crap? Over 90% of responsive web sites are bloated. These sites may look good on mobile devices, but few people will ever see them because they take to long to load. While the core tenets of responsive web design are easy to understand, doing it well is much more difficult. Slapping a few media queries on your existing site isn't enough. The solution is mobile first responsive web design. Mobile first and responsive web design aren't simply two great tastes that go great together. No they represent much more than that. Mobile first responsive web design is the responsible way to build responsive design. It is the best way to build something that is both responsive from a layout AND a performance perspective. Image of Boston Globe Responsive Design But if mobile first is the right way to do responsive design, then why are so few people doing it? In this session, we'll dig into why mobile first responsive design matters and the five techniques necessary to make it work. If your company is exploring responsive design of even if you're already building responsive designs, you won't want to miss this talk. About Jason Grigsby Jason GrigsbyJason and his Cloud Four co-founder Lyza Gardner wrote Head First Mobile Web which teaches web developers how to take their web skills and transfer them to mobile. He was a signatory to the Future Friendly manifesto which addresses sensible approaches to device diversity. Jason travel frequently giving talks and workshops helping individuals and organizations figure out how to best apply web technology to their multi-device efforts. Jason is also the founder of Mobile Portland. He normally avoids speaking at Mobile Portland meetings for this reason, but we've twisted his arm this month.

description nil Come join your fellow geo nerds for some map hacking, geographic learning, beer drinking, and conversation having! MaptimePDX is a brand new, map-focused hack and learn event, modeled after the hugely successful weekly San Francisco meetup, [MaptimeSF](http://www.meetup.com/Maptime-SF/). There will also be a table for folks to come and hack on and talk their own projects with others! This inaugural MaptimePDX event is being held in conjunction with [WhereCampPDX 6](http://calagator.org/events/1250464212), an unconference for all things geospatial. **Beginners especially welcome!** Bring a laptop if you can.
