The How & Why of Promoting Entrepreneurship Abroad - Richard Boly,
Ater Wynne

The idea of US diplomats promoting the growth of entrepreneurial ecosystems through US embassies may sound odd, but Richard Boly did just that at US Embassy, Rome. Now he is proposing that a dozen embassies do the same.

Many US diplomats today have had prior careers as entrepreneurs or VCs before joining the Foreign Service. Historically, half the US Ambassadors to the countries with the 50 biggest economies have been political appointees, people like Tom Stephenson from Sequoia Capital and Rock Schnabel of Trident Capital. Richard Boly will outline the success of the program in Italy and the strategy to scale that model.

Richard Boly is a career U.S. diplomat and Hoover Institution National Security Affairs Fellow. He recently served in U.S. Embassy, Rome, where he launched and ran a program to promote entrepreneurship in Italy. Other embassy assignments include the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Paraguay. In a prior life, he founded and ran a shrimp hatchery in coastal Ecuador. He is a graduate of Stanford University and the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at UCSD.

Join us for an interesting evening of discussion and networking with our speaker, other members, sponsors and charter members.

Event Sponsored by Ater Wynne & Reference Capital.

Vision Planning for the Community-Minded
Collective Agency Downtown

Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community.

Do you not yet have a vision statement written out, or would you like to tweak or revise? And do you say things like, "I'm hoping someone will want to contribute to my project: it is for the public good"? Then this workshop is for you.

Saturday, September 20th, 10am-12pm. Alex Linsker, Catherine Poole, and Russ Finkelstein will be the main facilitators and coaches of the workshop.

The main questions about your vision: Where are you coming from? What phrasing describes the reason why you’re doing this?

If related questions come up organically, we’ll explore. These questions are where groups like “Collective Agency” started.

Whether a website, open source project, discussion group, nonprofit startup, or something else, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). We’ll have fun and develop a vision planning community of our own.

In 2 hours we will meet-and-greet (go around and say what we’re working on and what we’d like to happen with it), have a brief overview, then invest most of the time in one-on-one coaching in 15 minute sessions.

Coaches will each bring a vision plan for something they’ve done.

This event is free of charge. Coaching/mentoring/skill-sharing will be available here in the future with both free and paid options.

Please RSVP. Plancast is best, so people can see you're coming. Email [email protected] or tweet @alexlinsker with any questions.

Reverse Pitch: Where the investors pitch you
WeWork Pioneer Place

We flip around the typical roles, asking some of Portland's leading funders to make the kind of elevator pitch they're typically on the other end of. Each investor will get five minutes and up to five slides to win over attendees. Following the last pitch the investors will have a panel discussion to help founders put their best foot forward.

We are excited to have special guest Arlan Hamilton participating, founder and managing partner of Backstage Capital. Her emergence on the venture capital stage has been chronicled in Fortune, Fast Company, Inc and Tech Crunch. Her firm has made over 80 investments in early stage companies in the last two years (including a handful of PDX firms).

Elevate Inclusion Summit 2018
Elevate Inclusion Summit 2018

Please join us at Elevate Capital’s first annual Elevate Inclusion conference, a gathering of entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds including women, minority entrepreneurs from underserved communities, and veterans as well as venture capitalists and investors.

The conference program will feature keynote presentations and panel discussions focused on inclusion, entrepreneurship, mentor capitalism, success stories and other topics. It will be a day of learning, sharing, inspiration, and new funding opportunities. Entrepreneurs will also be invited to present in front of potential investors.

Providing startup funding to the next group of break-out entrepreneurs is only part of what Elevate Capital believes that venture capitalists and other investors should do. Working to ensure inclusion while providing mentorship and funding to entrepreneurs from underserved communities is a vital part of building thriving business communities.

Indie.vc v 3.0 - Winter Tour 2019
Autodesk

Over the last few years, we’ve had the chance to host many events that expose founders to an alternative universe where companies they’ve been told can’t be built without massive amounts of VC funding are thriving with little, to no, outside investment. We often start these events by warning attendees that they won’t be able to unsee what they’re about to see. Many leave these events with a whole new perspective on not only what is possible, but why limiting exposure the traditional venture business model is beneficial for founders, employees and the cultures and values they’re hoping to embody with their businesses.

Rather than write another blog post or clever FAQ, we wanted to bring that same in-person experience to those considering investment from Indie.vc.

Over the next 2 months, we’ll be embarking on a tour of most major metros in the US (we tried picking towns that were a short-ish road trip away from just about anywhere). Our goal with these info sessions is to share our experiences and motives directly with the Indie-curious. They are open to founders interested in taking investment from Indie.vc and Angels/Funds interested in funding companies the way we do. We’re planning to have some founders we’ve backed, and founders who’ve built and scaled profitable businesses, join us for these events to answer questions and share their experiences embracing the values and tactics we preach.

Proudly hosted by PIE and PIE Shop in collaboration with Autodesk

Julie Harrelson, Managing Director of the Cascade Seed Fund

Julie has over 30 years of experience as an investor, founder, sales executive and consultant. She launched Cascade Seed Fund with Robert Pease in 2019 after being founder of the five predecessor Cascade Angels Funds.
