The Launch Loop can launch thousands of tons per day to high orbit for dollars per kilogram. It stores momentum and energy in a long (5600km) and narrow (5 cm) hypervelocity (14km/s) iron rotor. The Launch Loop is electrically powered and deployed from the ground, protected from space debris by the upper atmosphere, and can be built with existing engineering materials for a few gigadollars. Near term spinoffs will include power storage and transmission, permitting global peak usage leveling.

Server sky is a proposal to build large dispersed arrays of 7 gram paper-thin solar-powered computer satellites and launch them into 6400km earth orbit. Arrays act as large parallel computers, as well as sparse phased array antennas, transmitting thousands of communication beams simultaneously to ground receivers and other arrays in space.

Server-sat arrays use unlimited space solar power, and operate outside the biosphere. The environmental impact of power generation and heat disposal is tiny. Other surprising biological effects will need study. Earth can return to what it is good at – green and growing things – while space can be filled with gray and computing things.

Ariel Waldman is the founder of Spacehack.org, a directory of ways to participate in space exploration, and the global instigator of Science Hack Day, an event that brings together scientists, technologists, designers and people with good ideas to see what they can create in one weekend. She is also a fellow at Institute For The Future.

The Portland State Aerospace Society (PSAS), a student aerospace group at Portland State University with decades of experience in high-powered amateur rocketry, is hosting a Yuri’s Night Party, in honor of the international space holiday.

Fifty-five years ago, Yuri Gagarin was the first person to travel into space when his spacecraft completed one full orbit about the Earth on April 12, 1961. In honor of his great accomplishment, parties are held worldwide every year to celebrate humanity’s progress in space.

As part of this international celebration, PSAS is hosting a “space race” with challenges and games, technology displays from local rocketry and space groups, engineering labs open to visitors, and food and beverages provided. We will also be screening the film First Orbit, a reconstruction of what Yuri would have seen on his journey.

The event will be held on April 12 from 6:30-9:30 in the Engineering Building of PSU (1930 SW 4th Ave Portland, OR 97201, at the intersection of SW 4th and College). All ages are welcome; there is a recommended $10 donation per person at the door.

Eric Lyness is the NASA software and operations lead at Goddard Space Flight Center for the Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer on the ExoMars 2020 rover and Victoria Da-Poian is an Aerospace Engineer. They will present their talk, Machine Learning to Find Life on Mars and Beyond.

In 2021 the European ExoMars rover will land on Mars with the Mars Organic Molecular Analyzer (MOMA) laboratory to analyze soil samples searching for past or present life. NASA is developing machine learning algorithms to help the scientists more quickly analyze the data when it arrives from Mars. In this talk, we will present the current work using MOMA mass spectrometer data acquired during ground testing. Using this data we are aiding the scientists by matching new spectra with the most similar spectra from past experiments. We will present the nuances of mass spectra, our limitations with respect to data, and our approach to the problem. We hope to elicit feedback from the attendees.

We'll be showing off all of our open source a aerospace projects, including:

• The engineering unit of OreSat0, Oregon's first satellite.
• OreSat0.5, our next CubeSat going to space in July!
• Liquid fuel rocket engines and our rocket engine test stand
• Amateur rockets
• Satellite ground stations

We'll have snacks and a lot of very enthusiastic students. Come on down and nerd out with us around aerospace!

We are the Portland State Aerospace Society (PSAS), an interdisciplinary, student-led group at Portland State University, that built Oregon’s first and second satellite, both which are in orbit. PSAS works closely with students, non-profit organizations, companies, and schools both in and outside of Oregon to also promote STEAM education, one of which is our Pacific Northwest Aerospace Expo (PNWAE).

The PNWAE is a yearly event held by PSAS at Portland State University since 2019. What was once a small, intimate gathering of local aerospace industry professionals and enthusiasts has become better than ever with remarks from Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley in previous years. We've also had esteemed guest speakers from NASA, John Hopkins APL and other instructions join us for remarkable talks.

Although we are a hybrid event, this year we are having in-person booths, to which other universities, colleges, and science organizations such as Oregon State University, OES Aerospace, etc. are coming to table and participate.
