TiE Clean Energy SIG – Perkins Coie (PDX) We begin the new year with our Clean energy SIG meeting. The agenda for the evening includes a presentation by Ms. Lacey Riddle, Focus Oregon Organizer for Focus The Nation who will present a project based on proven solar thermal techniques- The SunnySide Neighbourhood Project Overview. Sunnyside Neighborhood Project Overview Sunnyside Neighborhood Energy (SunNE) is conceived as a comprehensive solution to local thermal energy needs. SunNE is a project of Northwest Neighborhood Energy (N2E), a new non-profit incorporated in Oregon. SunNE will eventually be structured as a community-owned district energy (DE) utility powered by renewable sources that will serve Sunnyside Environmental School and the surrounding historic neighborhood and commercial areas. The project is modeled on existing mid-sized DE utilities in Sweden, Denmark and Canada, which use solar thermal storage and biofuel boilers to provide thermal energy for detached single-family homes, multi-family residential and small commercial buildings. Adapting these successful international examples for implementation in Oregon gives us a scalable, replicable model whose economic and environmental impact will be tremendous. Planned system components include thermal solar collectors, mass thermal storage for heating and anticipated cooling, combining water to water and ground-coupled heat pump technology, waste heat recovery, PV arrays and biofuel boilers for boosting and back-up. A distribution system of hydronic insulated pipes will deliver hot and chilled water for space heating, cooling and domestic hot water to the school, several hundred nearby residences, and commercial buildings. SunNE will operate as a member-owned, unregulated franchise utility within the City of Portland. |

TiE Oregon: Energy Solutions for the Developing World – Intel Ronler Acres RA1 Auditorium Bringing cost effective energy to the Billions living in primitive conditions Over 1.6 billion people, upwards of 30% of the global population, are without access to electricity. Electricity advances developmental factors such as small business development, extended working hours, access to communications, enhanced education levels and rural development. Energy can improve life of millions. In developing countries access to energy remains constrained by factors such as limited access to well adapted affordable technology, fragmented small markets, prohibitive taxes and limited financial resources. On Dec 14th , at the Copenhagen Climate conference the Obama Administration announced a $350 million dollar initiative dubbed “Climate REDI” to promote clean energy technologies in developing countries. Join us on March 17th for a discussion with our expert panel, on what kind of innovations in products, finance, supply and service can ensure reliable & affordable energy to the billions of poor across the world. Our 2 presenters Michael(Kipp) Baratoff, Principal, Equilibrium Capital & Patrick Maloney, Program Director, Lemelson Foundation have been fully immersed in this space, having been engaged with social entrepreneurs over the course of their careers. Lemelson Foundation awarded an energy grant to Selco India for it’s Incubation Center and Innovation Department to develop new products and new business models to solve key problems for energy consumers. The SELCO Solar Light Private Limited (SELCO India) is already an important provider of solar systems and cook stoves in southern India, with products that allow rural families to increase their household income while reducing the environmental and health risks of higher-cost kerosene lamps and inefficient stoves. Our event organizer, TiE Oregon Clean Energy SIG chair, Ravi Sinha, is the Chairman of Choice Solar India Pvt Ltd., company engaged in creative distribution of energy solutions to India's marginalized residents. Bill Campbell, our moderator for the evening is also a Principal at Equlibrium as well as a TiE Oregon Charter Member and Board Member. They will bring an insight into problems, economics, delivery & growth of energy solutions. This event is also a continuation of our theme “Serving the 6 Billion” on which we launched TiE Oregon in 2007. The keynote (watch the video on our website) speaker at the launch was C.K Prahalad, Paul & Ruth McCracken Distinguished University Professor of Corporate Strategy at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, a globally recognized business consultant, who gave a stirring speech about the Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid. It centers on the proposition that the world's poor can be the engine of the next round of global trade and prosperity and can be a source of innovation. |

TiE Oregon: Energy Storage for the Smart Grid – Stoel Rives LLP Energy storage is increasingly perceived as a necessary and vital component of any future smart grid, yet meaningful energy storage is still a scarce and missing component. Why is energy storage so important? - Energy storage helps solve the variability issues with renewable energy (solar and wind) generation, and as such will help balance the grid - Distributed energy storage located near the point of use will provide localized power, thereby decreasing the need to build new power plants and additional transmission lines. - Energy storage has been proclaimed by some as a "killer app" by utilizing batteries in parked electric vehicle (EV) fleets to feed stored energy back to the grid. Such Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) applications have promise to feed energy back to the grid for special purposes to benefit both the utility and the electric car owner. - Significant utility-scale storage capacity solves an even bigger issue, capturing and utilizing the massive amounts of electrical generating capacity that is otherwise typically unused. The discussion will focus on: - Value chain elements of the energy storage industry - Who are local champions of energy storage - What are the interests of the investment community - What does the policy and regulatory framework look like - How do customers value energy storage - How is the smart grid expected to interact with energy storage Join our panel on April 21st, to understand the technologies, trade-offs, market segments, future potential of energy storage. Our 3 panelists are: - Dylan Steeg, Director Intel Capital, Intel's global venture capital organization. Dylan is responsible for several cleantech and semiconductor sectors, including photovoltaics, smart grid/demand response, datacenter energy efficiency, and semiconductor manufacturing
The panel will be moderated by John Thornton, Founder, Clean Future, a consulting firm providing business and technical expertise at the convergence of energy, mobility, sustainability and the Smart Grid. |
