DESCRIPTION:

Food scraps comprise almost one-fifth of the amount of material our region sends to landfills every year – enough to fill 5000 long-haul trucks. These food scraps can provide compost, energy and other benefits to communities, but what are the most desirable environmental and economic approaches to dealing with this resource? What impact do food scraps have on the climate, water supplies, energy, and food security?

David Allaway, senior policy analyst with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, will share insights for different ways of dealing with food scraps while reducing what we throw away.

This event is part of Metro’s Let’s Talk Trash series designed to engage you in discussions that help shape how our region manages its waste in the future.

Building Simulation Optimization for Climatic Passive Heating and Cooling Design: Advanced Materials, Workflows, and Tools

Jeremiah Crossett, Senior Analyst, Phase Change Energy Solutions Inc. and Founder of NRGSIM Inc. and Eric Youngson, President and Founder of Succession Ecological Services (SES)

Modern low energy buildings require innovative strategies that maintain occupant comfort while reducing energy consumption through the use of passive systems and sophisticated materials. Historically, building design has focused on active systems that increase complexity, drive costs higher, and result in environmental degradation. This presentation focuses on early load reduction that allows for smaller, more efficient mechanical systems through the optimization of building envelope design. Through the use of Pareto front analysis, designs are able to achieve optimal combinations of window, insulation, and phase change material (PCM) to achieve a desired balance between energy performance and cost objectives for various climate zones.

New tools developed in part by the presenters will be demonstrated using the jE+ EA cloud optimization Energy Plus shell, the "Eppy" Python scripting package, and a custom version of Energy Plus with enhanced PCM features. In addition, a brief demonstration of the NRGSIM web based energy modeling application will be provided.

Electricity advances developmental factors such as small business development, extended working hours, access to communications, enhanced education levels and rural development. In developing countries access to energy remains constrained by factors such as limited access to well adapted affordable technology, fragmented small markets, prohibitive taxes and limited financial resources. On Dec 14th , at the Copenhagen Climate conference the Obama Administration announced a $350 million dollar initiative dubbed “Climate REDI” to promote clean energy technologies in developing countries.

We begin the new year with our Clean energy SIG meeting. The agenda for the evening includes a presentation by Ms. Lacey Riddle, Focus Oregon Organizer for Focus The Nation who will present a project based on proven solar thermal techniques- The SunnySide Neighbourhood Project Overview.

Sunnyside Neighborhood Project Overview

Sunnyside Neighborhood Energy (SunNE) is conceived as a comprehensive solution to local thermal energy needs. SunNE is a project of Northwest Neighborhood Energy (N2E), a new non-profit incorporated in Oregon. SunNE will eventually be structured as a community-owned district energy (DE) utility powered by renewable sources that will serve Sunnyside Environmental School and the surrounding historic neighborhood and commercial areas. The project is modeled on existing mid-sized DE utilities in Sweden, Denmark and Canada, which use solar thermal storage and biofuel boilers to provide thermal energy for detached single-family homes, multi-family residential and small commercial buildings. Adapting these successful international examples for implementation in Oregon gives us a scalable, replicable model whose economic and environmental impact will be tremendous.

Planned system components include thermal solar collectors, mass thermal storage for heating and anticipated cooling, combining water to water and ground-coupled heat pump technology, waste heat recovery, PV arrays and biofuel boilers for boosting and back-up. A distribution system of hydronic insulated pipes will deliver hot and chilled water for space heating, cooling and domestic hot water to the school, several hundred nearby residences, and commercial buildings. SunNE will operate as a member-owned, unregulated franchise utility within the City of Portland.

If you haven't already signed up for the Hack tomorrow at PSU, we hope some details included here will entice you. To prepare our participants for a fun and productive day, below are details and resources for the Hack.

Goals: To generate ideas are innovative to solving environmental and sustainability, social equity issues through utilization of software and mobile apps. Don’t forget to have some fun.

Idea Generation: To start, you should ask the following questions: 1) What issues you and your team would like to tackle? (ie. carbon emissions reduction by buildings or vehicles, solar potential identifier, change of personal habits, e-waste tracking, etc.) 2) What do other similar applications exist on the market? Sometimes, building on existing apps can resolve a more refined product. 3) What is the marketability? Is it scalable?

The best project ideas are one that you are passionate about, and have some components of competition and linkage to social media.

Finding Data: While you are brainstorming ideas, you should also consider data availability as well. It is not the end of the world if you don’t have data sets or APIs to mock up a prototype. Simply build your own datasets, even if just a few that are enough for you to test out your product.

TiE Oregon: Energy Storage for the Smart Grid

Energy storage is increasingly perceived as a necessary and vital component of any future smart grid, yet meaningful energy storage is still a scarce and missing component.

Why is energy storage so important? - Energy storage helps solve the variability issues with renewable energy (solar and wind) generation, and as such will help balance the grid - Distributed energy storage located near the point of use will provide localized power, thereby decreasing the need to build new power plants and additional transmission lines. - Energy storage has been proclaimed by some as a "killer app" by utilizing batteries in parked electric vehicle (EV) fleets to feed stored energy back to the grid. Such Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) applications have promise to feed energy back to the grid for special purposes to benefit both the utility and the electric car owner. - Significant utility-scale storage capacity solves an even bigger issue, capturing and utilizing the massive amounts of electrical generating capacity that is otherwise typically unused.

The discussion will focus on: - Value chain elements of the energy storage industry - Who are local champions of energy storage - What are the interests of the investment community - What does the policy and regulatory framework look like - How do customers value energy storage - How is the smart grid expected to interact with energy storage
