We are very lucky to have Surya Buchwald (also known as Momo the Monster) teaching a Quartz Composer workshop.

Quartz Composer (QC) is a free, powerful easy-to-use visual programming language for the Apple Macintosh. This workshop will take you from starting the program for the first time to building your own Interactive scene controlled with a gamepad. You’ll learn how to teach yourself QC, and meet others with whom you can collaborate and troubleshoot. No programming experience necessary.

Immediately following the QC workshop, from 3-6pm, we will have a meeting of the NorthWest AudioVisualists, a new group of artists, musicians, animators, and video jockeys, which will include live performances using QC. See http://nwav.org for more information.

Required:

Macintosh computer running 10.5 (Leopard). Anything from a G4 iBook to a Mac Pro tower will work.

Gamepad (Mac-compatible). We recommend the Logitech Dual Action (either Apple Only or USB), which looks like a Playstation controller and can be purchased for $20 (from GameStop, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Best Buy, etc.). You can use any USB controller or joystick, but this one will be the easiest with which to follow along.

XCode - This can be installed from your System DVD that came with your computer - it used to be called ‘Developer Tools’. It will install the components needed to develop software on your machine, including our Quartz Composer program. After installing, do a system update.

Before the iPad launched, we convened a panel of experts to help examine what the iPad would mean for businesses, entrepreneurs and developers. The panel was a hit and the conversation continued into the evening.

By popular demand, we're bringing James Keller, one of the panelists, back to talk about what we got right and what we got wrong when it comes to the iPad. Accompanying James will be Darin Richardson from Refresh Media.

Together, they will focus on the most compelling and interesting aspect of the iPad: the way we interact with the device.

We'll examine how the iPad's user interface design works, what we've learned from Apple's own applications, and how other applications are taking advantage of the form factor.

James Keller is a digital communications strategist and user experience evangelist at Small Society, a small agency based in Portland with a passion for the iPhone™ platform, dedicated to helping organizations bring great ideas to life. Before joining the Small Society team, James was at Wieden+Kennedy helping the Portland office align client business goals and brand experiences with emerging technologies.

Leveraging her extensive knowledge of interaction design, business analysis, campaign analytics, and integrated marketing communications, she has led multiple teams in creating efficient and effective online strategies for top brands such as Coca-Cola, NIKE, Procter & Gamble, Levi’s, LAIKA Studio, Zipcar, and the MTV Networks.

Darin Richardson, Refresh Media

Darin Richardson is a partner in Refresh Media, a small studio that focuses marrying beautiful interface design with smart technology. He concentrates on information architecture, interaction design, and front-end coding to make his clients' projects shine. Before Refresh, Darin earned his chops at software and design firms in California.

Darin is obsessive about the details, refrains from talking endlessly about CSS 3 properties (unless you ask), and always enjoys a good hike in the Cascades armed with his trusty Nikon D90.

Make sure to install Xcode 6 Beta beforehand and read through the introduction of The Swift Programming Language so you're ready to start hacking right away.

Come take an in-depth look at the world of iBeacon. Find out what they are, how they work and what other types of Bluetooth Low Energy beacons exist and how they differ from the iBeacon standard.

We'll also talk about security and privacy concerns for businesses and consumers of iBeacon; different use-cases for iBeacon in retail and business; what hardware options are available; and give a high-level overview of iOS and Android facilities for communicating with these devices.

Steven Osborn

Steven Osborn is a start-up entrepreneur, software hacker, and hardware enthusiast. In 2009 he co-founded a mobile messaging company called Urban Airship (urbanairship.com) that powers thousands of mobile applications on iPhone and Android for companies like Starbucks, Redbox, and ESPN. In his spare time, he enjoys participating in triathlons, baking bread, traveling, and spending time with his family. Steven lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife, Jenny, and son, Theo. He is also an accomplished Guitar Hero rock star and Army veteran.

David Crow

David Crow is a mobile engineer at Urban Airship involved in early stage ibeacon r&d. He consistently spends time outside of work on quantified self projects, floating in sensory deprivation tanks, and enjoying spicy bloody marys (always gin).

With ARC and Swift, memory management isn't nearly as difficult as it used to be, but I think every app developer has bumped up against problems with memory management at some point in their career, whether that shows up as crashes or poor performance or just plain weirdness at run-time. This month I'll go over a few tips 'n' tricks I've collected over the years about how to find and fix problems which stem from the mismanagement of memory using the tools built-in to Xcode and Instruments.

We'll have people there with a mix of experience levels and knowledge about all kinds of different technologies and aspects of our field. So, whether you want to be there to help answer questions and share your experience, or reap the benefits of other's experience the goal is to create a space to just make some progress on something, whether it's your project or someone else's!

As usual there will be plenty of opportunity for just networking and catching up time if you don't have a specific project or anything, please do come, we'd love to just talk shop with you too.

Join us as Mattt (@mattt) shows us how to take advantage of Codable in our own projects, and shares interesting tidbits about the feature's history, underlying implementation, and how its performance stacks up against the alternatives.

PDX #macadmins meetup group! We're an eclectic, friendly group consisting of members in and around the greater Portland, OR area. Our members work in various positions/industries/sectors administering and supporting the Apple ecosystem and related technology.

In this session, we'll explore Apple Logic Pro X's capabilities for orchestration using samples, software instruments, and a range of sonic filters by experimenting with orchestrating an AI-composed piece, and then participating in a Q&A or maybe a little group mixing and mastering practice.

On September 13, people will join distributed protests at Apple stores across the country to demand Apple cancel its plans to install photo and message scanning spyware on its devices.

Background: On August 5, 2021 Apple announced plans to include new surveillance features in an upcoming iOS update that will scan all photos uploaded to iCloud Photos and all iMessage images sent or received by child accounts. This sort of monitoring is a shocking departure from Apple’s former commitment to privacy and security for its users. Because these scans happen on the devices themselves, they would bypass end-to-end encryption and establish a new precedent for law enforcement to access information on personal devices. Apple is the only major tech company to take this incredibly dangerous step—but once they do, others may be forced to follow.

There is still time to stop this—we need to show massive opposition and demand Apple reverse course and NOT push this update. Join us to protest Apple and stop the spy-phone!
