Startup accounting to keep you out of trouble – Colab Coworking Starting up a venture can be filled with big questions we have trouble answering well. This is especially true when it comes to your finances and accounting. This event will bring local experts who can help you get a clear perspective accounting choices and structures. We plan to go over some very basic concepts as groundwork that can set a solid foundation. Things like; • Basic accounting terms (asset, liability, revenue, Cost of goods sold, Operating Expenses, Gross profit, net profit, fixed expense, variable expense) • Basic accounting principles (measurement, matching, recognition, etc.) • Balance sheet & Income statements (can’t fly without knowing what the instruments are saying) • Cash-flow planning & budgeting. • Profitability vs. solvency. The first doesn’t always mean the second. • Capital requirements (equip, raw material, inventory, etc.) • Cash-to-cash cycle We also plan to do some hands-on exercises in Excel. So bring your laptops and get ready to get your fingers dirty in some exciting accounting. Ok, maybe that's a stretch but, it learning your way around these core principles and more and make a night and day difference in your Startup. That! is fun! So come out an join us! SEC Accounting Update – Oregon Zoo, Skyline Banquet Room Please join us on Thursday, January 15, for our annual SEC and FASB Accounting Update. During this session, you can learn about implementation issues surrounding the revenue recognition standard, and what the current hot topics and comment letter trends are at the SEC. An update from the AICPA/SEC conference held in early December will also be discussed. This session features Paul Munter, a partner in KPMG’s Department of Professional Practice. Paul is involved in the development of KPMG’s positions in response to proposals from the IASB, IFRIC, FASB, SEC, and other standard setters as well as the development of the firm’s guidance and publications on both IFRS and U.S. GAAP including comparison of IFRS to U.S. GAAP, business combinations, share-based payment, and revenue recognition. Paul served as the Academic Fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission where he worked on many of the Commission’s Sarbanes-Oxley initiatives and rule-making activities. He was honored by the Texas Society of CPAs as its first “Outstanding Discussion Leader.” He has also been honored by the Florida Institute of CPAs as its Outstanding Educator and he was honored by Beta Alpha Psi as the National Business Information Professional of the Year. Paul will be joined by Dennis White, an audit senior manager in KPMG’s Portland office serving both public and private companies.
