Calm Technology at Hand Eye Supply's Curiosity Club

Come to Hand Eye Supply's FORTNIGHTLY FORUM FOR THE FEARLESSLY CURIOUS!
This upcoming talk will feature Amber Case presenting on Calm Technology.
Description: We cannot interact with our everyday life in the same way we interact with a desktop computer. Technology shouldn’t require all of our attention, just some of it, and only when necessary. How can our devices take advantage of location, proximity and haptics to help improve our lives instead of get in the way? This presentation covers the history of calm technology, wearable computing, and how designers can make apps “ambient” while respecting privacy and security. We’ll look at ambient notifications, compressing information into other senses, and designing for the least amount of cognitive overhead.
---
About Amber Case: Case is an entrepreneur and researcher helping Fortune 500 companies design, build, and think through their roadmap for connected devices. She is the former co-founder and CEO of Geoloqi, a location-based software company acquired by Esri in 2012. She spoke about the future of the interface for SXSW 2012’s keynote address, and her TED talk, “We are all cyborgs now”, has been viewed over a million times. Named one of National Geographic's Emerging Explorers, she’s been listed among Inc Magazine's 30 under 30 and featured among Fast Company’s Most Influential Women in Technology.
Case is the author of An Illustrated Dictionary of Cyborg Anthropology and Designing Calm Technology from O’Reilly Books (Fall 2015). She is a passionate advocate of privacy and the future of data ownership, and is interested in furthering the ideas of Calm Technology, wearable computing, and the future of the interface. Her current work as Managing Director of Existence at Healthways involves predictive analysis and wellness. Amber lives and works in Portland, Oregon; you can follow her on Twitter @caseorganic and learn more at caseorganic.com. |

We're going to have two talks this month. First Russell Mull will present:
Logic Programming from the Inside Out
Description: Learn about the guts of miniKanren and core.logic, obtaining a deeper understanding of the fundamental truths of logic programming. (And also some neat functional programming tricks)
Then I'll lead a workshop on:
Single Page Apps with ClojureScript, Figwheel, Reagent, etc.
Description: We'll do a quick high-level workshop to introduce using ClojureScript with Reagent to create a very simple web app. I'll show a work flow using Figwheel and we'll discuss some architectural decisions as time allows.
If you've been meaning to look into ClojureScript this is a great way to start and if you're experienced come and share your thoughts and help others.
Bring your laptop with leinengen installed or team up with others at the meeting. |

10 Billion a Day, 100 Milliseconds Per - Joint meetup with Erlang & Elixer Group
Roll back
| description |

→ |
This is a Joint meetup with the Portland Erlang and Elixir User Group.
Brian Troutwine of Adroll will be joining us tonight. Adroll uses Erlang to power their high-speed, never-stop online advertising services. That's right, 10 billion transactions a day.
Brian's talk will provide motivation for the extensive instrumentation of complex computer systems and make the argument that such systems are essential. This talk will provide practical starting points in Erlang projects and maintain a perspective on the human organization around the computer system. Brian will focus on getting started with instrumentation in a systematic way and follow up with the challenge of interpreting and acting on metrics emitted from a production system in a way which does not overwhelm operators’ ability to effectively control or prioritize faults in the system. He’ll use historical examples and case studies from my work to keep the talk anchored in the practical.
Talk objectives:
Brian hopes to convince the audience of two things:
* that monitoring and instrumentation is an essential component of any long-lived system and
* that it's not so hard to get started, after all.
He’ll keep a clear-eyed view of what works and is difficult in practice so that the audience can make a reasoned decision after the talk. |

Elixir Games PDX - "JVMergy independence is a matter of national security"
Roll back
| description |
Can you build a data processing pipeline that might one day help save humanity? For this next meetup we'll be looking at one of Elixir's features that sets it distinctly apart from its older Erlang sibling.... the Pipeline Operator.
In the previous two Elixir Games PDX meetups we've looked at how to solve some simple problems in a functional programming style, and we've also taken a look at Elixir's concurrency and parallelism paradigm. We'll be partially combining some of those principles and practices to mine some critical data.
For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike.
Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns.
If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them.
Food and drinks will be provided. There will also be small desk fodder prizes for the winning team.
Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go.
http://elixir-lang.org/install.html
If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches.
Special thanks to my friend Russell Mull and Puppet Labs, ‘the leader in IT automation’, for hosting us. |

GAP Inc's Data Architect speaking in Portland May 19th at DAMA PDX
Roll back
| description |
How does GAP, Inc respond to the challenge of bringing together metadata across all their data systems? Gap's Data Architect, Alain Knechtli, will be coming to Portland May 19th to tell us about their common framework for reporting and management.
Fellow Lovers of Data, join me for this great opportunity for face-to-face education. For more information and to register, go to damapdx.org.
<h3>
Summary
</h3>
Many organizations are stuck with a plethora of disparate systems. This presentation will address GAP Inc.’s response to the challenge of bringing together metadata under a common framework for reporting and management. It will also include a forward looking strategy for incorporating new or narrowly technologies into the metadata framework.
• Agile Logical modeling?
• What’s left to model? Measuring the metadata backlog
• When is a model just barely good enough?
• Ubiquitous language - Dealing with synonyms, and dialects
• Managing technical debt when there are discrepancies across applications and domains
• Modeling services
• Modeling new technologies
• How do legacy systems implement the Enterprise Logical Model?
<h3>
SPEAKER BIO
</h3>
Alain Knechtli is a seasoned data architect with over 30 years of experience across many facets of information technology. In the data architecture and metadata sphere, a partial list of Alain's clients includes GE, Cisco, Netflix, and Gap Inc. Alain is currently playing a key role in Gap Inc.'s endeavor to expand the traditional modeling paradigm to include non-traditional sources and environments. His leadership has enabled the creation of a modeling framework that includes legacy and new applications in an agile environment. He has facilitated the evolution of data architecture from a 'bottleneck' to a 'facilitator' of rapid, incremental development.

NW Animation Fest presents a full week of events at the Hollywood Theatre: feature films, international short film marathons, an Oregon Animation Industry Showcase, and special topic screenings. Features include Oscar-nominated Song of the Sea, which follows the magical journey of an Irish seal-girl and her brother—and Until Sbornia Do Us Part, a vivacious, tango-driven, comic-fantasy about a romantic musician and a volcanic island that’s floating away from the mainland. The industry showcase offers a glimpse into Oregon’s powerhouse commercial studios, with TV clips, commercials, special effects, and music videos (think Portlandia & Grimm). Dig deeper into the world of indie animators with eight special topics: family friendly, strange/sexy, computer animation, abstract/psychedelic, films by women, Canadian Oscar winners, NW animators, and Oregon animation history. NW Animation Fest climaxes with a weekend-long marathon through the world’s best new short films, selected from 1400 international submissions. The festival includes after-parties, lobby installations, meeting the filmmakers, more. If you’re an animation-lover, this is the can’t-miss event for 2015. Hollywood Theatre May 4-10, tickets $8-15, festival passes $70. |

<h3>
Summary
</h3>
<h3>
SPEAKER BIO
</h3>

Counterpoint: Don't Write The Docs
Roll back

The WTD NA conference is coming in May, so it's a good time to start planning for post-conference Meetups. We'll meet again on Tuesday June 9, when Diana Potter, the Senior Director of Customer Success at Customer.io tells us when to say: "Don't Write The Docs".
When I started working as a Technical Writer, our local VP told me that to do my job well, I'd spend significant time testing and pushing for changes to our software. To me, that sounds like the essence of Diana's talk.
Diana manages Customer.io's support/docs team. As such, I expect that her talk will interest Documentarians, Support Engineers, and Knowledge Base Creators. Here is the abstract of her talk:
************
Writing user facing documentation gives you a unique perspective on software. How does something work? Will the software explode when I push this button? Okay, now how do you explain that explosion to a user, in a way that makes sense and captures their attention?
What do you do, though, when that unique perspective illustrates areas of confusion? Why document something that's confusing? Fix the confusion!
Write the docs that make sense for the *user* and advocate for product changes on behalf of the "user" too.
How do you decide when it makes sense to document, and when it makes sense to dig in your heels and push for an internal change to the product? How can you use documentation to push for change? Come learn what I've learned, the processes I've put in place, and learn the following chant: "does this doc make sense?" |

Diversity, technology, nonprofits and more (PDXTech4Good)
Roll back
| description |

<p>We'll be talking about issues of diversity, accountability and representation in nonprofit technology and technology in general. Presenters will cover topics like:</p>
<p>• Building diversity in tech teams, and why diversity is critical to success whether you're for-profit or nonprofit. <br></p>
<p>• Local and national projects by nonprofits to broaden the types of people who get involved in technology and programming as young people.</p>
<p>• Local and national efforts by nonprofits to address sexism and racism that often plays out within "tech culture." <br></p>
<p>• The state of the Portland tech community when it comes to inclusion and accountability, especially as it relates to sexism and racism.</p>
<p><b>PRESENTERS</b></p>
<p><b>Melissa Chavez</b> is a digital and physical space UX designer who organizes events for tech and nonprofit communities. Open Source Bridge, the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, PyDX, and Portland VegFest are some of the events she helps run. Reading YA novels helps keep her sane. Twitter: <a href="https://twitter.com/capnleela">@capnleela</a><b> <br></b></p>
<p><b>Jennifer Davidson</b> works at Intel as a User Experience Researcher and Software Interaction Designer. She recently completed her PhD in Computer Science at Oregon State University, where she researched human-computer interaction, specifically involving older adults in the design and development of open source software. She is Interim Board President of ChickTeck. She strongly believes that everyone should have a say in our technology revolution. Twitter: <a href="https://twitter.com/jewifer">@jewifer</a> <br></p>
<p><b>Robert Raleigh</b> is helping underserved youth build successful careers as technology professionals in the software/IT industries. Robert is a front-end web developer, and the executive director of Log Camp, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) providing technology-focused career-and-technical education for low-income youth, and youth from communities of color. Log Camp's Tech Works Youth Developer Academy and after-school enrichment programming have created a diverse youth talent pipeline. Log Camp works with corporate, nonprofit, government, and educational partners to increase diversity and equitable access to technology, coding, and computer science education for youth in the Portland metro region. Robert is an Alaskan Native (Tlingit), a first-generation college graduate, and a former foster-child. In the past, Robert has worked for the Corvallis Chamber of Commerce, Technology Association of Oregon, and Oregon Health Sciences University. Robert is an active member of the NAYA Family Center Community Leaders Council, and the Portland City Club. Twitter: <a href="https://twitter.com/RobertGRaleigh">@RobertGRaleigh</a> </p>
<p><b>Jennifer Cazares</b>, better known as "<b>Yenni</b>," identifies as a vessel for social change. As a non-binary Queer Latin@, Yenni began the journey in activism at the ripe age of 15 when after taking over the high school Key Club was able to enlist over 70 active volunteers in community events. Despite leaving high school on the suspicion of a queer identity and experiencing fear of coming out due to a Latin@ upbringing, Yenni made it to engineering school in Oregon where due to the lack of support for diversity Yenni was pushed out. Having dedicated the last decade to positive youth development in various arenas of the youth empowerment movement with organizations such as Altamed, Six Rivers Planned Parenthood, ChickTech, Northwest Youth Corps, and currently with LULAC Vancouver. Yenni looks forward to creating change through the power of education and technology. Lover of the outdoors and all things living. "Dropping knowledge and love everywhere I go." (Pronouns: Yenni) <br></p>

<p><b>WHAT YOU'LL GET OUT OF PDXTECH4GOOD EVENTS</b></p>
<p><b>Nonprofit staffers</b> will find a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for those not experienced with technology, and many chances to ask questions of tech-experienced nonprofits and experts.</p>
<p><b>Techies</b> will find opportunities to hear the real-world stories of nonprofit clients, and put their own expertise to social good — as well as the potential for lasting relationships (be they paid or volunteer) with leading organizations in our community.</p>
<p><b>Activists and community organizers</b> will see and be given the chance to present on successful uses of technology for social change. We'll explore how technology can help support activism and where activism can push it forward.</p> |
