create Calagator::Event 1250458443 PDXBreakfast Tweetup Roll back

description nil J-P thinks spring break in a warm location with Big and Little C trumps PDXBreakfast. We know otherwise. We will be eating tasty breakfast reminiscent of my youth in NY, while J-P's clan eats fresh topical fruit. I mean, which would you choose? But wait, there's more. As a bialy expert (I grew up eating them from THE bialy source in NY and read Mimi Sheraton's "The Bialy Eaters"), I will be critiquing Kenny & Zuke's bialys for your entertainment. If that isn't enough of an incentive, then you clearly just have no idea what you are missing.

update Calagator::Event 1250458436 Development of Social Capital: Successful Careers and Innovative Products Though Professional Activities Roll back

description Jim Isaak, IEEE Computer Society President, will share his experiences and research on the benefits of professional involvement outside of work. Professional activities outside of work provide opportunities and benefits for engineers and their employers that are not fully appreciated for their positive impact on careers and contribution to their employer. Involvement in professional activities allows individuals to develop skills and expertise that enables them to leverage their technical skills. Helping organize meetings, with program planning or peer review, chairing committees or being elected to the Board of Directors provides opportunities to learn and develop a robust professional network. Volunteering develops problem solving, team work and leadership skills at a minimal cost. Innovation is enhanced by exposure to new and complementary technologies and professional relationships that would not otherwise occur. John Hagel, noted business writer and management consultant, summarizes the benefits of social capital and social networks: “… the focus of value creation is effective participation in knowledge flows, which are constantly being renewed. Finding ways to connect with people and institutions possessing new knowledge becomes increasingly important… The more your company or country can connect with relevant and diverse sources to create new knowledge, the more it will thrive. And if you don’t, others will.” After the presentation join us for a beer. Speaker: Jim Isaak is recently retired from Southern New Hampshire University. His research focused on how social capital is developed and influenced through interactions in professional activities, including professional societies, standards committees, and on-line communities. Jim is the 2010 IEEE Computer Society President. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Society for the Social Implications of Technology and has been a director of the IEEE. His industry experience includes Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Charles River Data Systems, Data General, Intel, Calma and IBM. He chaired the POSIX/UNIX standards committee for 15 years. He has a BS in Computer Studies and a MSEE in Computer Engineering from Stanford. He has a BS in Computer Studies and a MSEE in Computer Engineering from Stanford. description nil The Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council (SWWDC) is partnering with the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN) to bring a vital connection with the world of entrepreneurship to Southwest WA. We are leveraging the network and expertise of OEN to support innovation and growth. OEN entrepreneurs tell good stories. They have to if they want their business to succeed. They also need access to information, contacts and capital. The OEN PubTalk™ is a great starting place for entrepreneurs to find just that. OEN's PubTalk™, held the second Wednesday of every month (except July and December), is a unique mix of educational panel discussions delivered by successful entrepreneurs, investors or business experts combined with opportunities for entrepreneurs to gain expertise in delivering investment pitches. Entrepreneurs can present as a featured company at a monthly PubTalk or they can compete in OEN's Seed Oregon PubTalk™ competition. During the monthly PubTalk's™, OEN selects two emerging entrepreneurs to present their five-minute pitch on who they are, and what they do in front of a live audience of experienced entrepreneurs. Presenting Northwest business entrepreneurs receive feedback on their products, services, business model, marketing strategy, or other integral component of their business. The objective is to leverage the strength and experience of the community, providing an invaluable learning opportunity for young entrepreneurs.
