Refresh Portland June: Bram Pitoyo on Faster and More Secure Webfonts

TypeKit, FontSquirrel and Kernest are all great solutions to have webfonts in your sites, but wouldn’t you like to know what these services actually do in the underbellies, for once? And do you know that making fonts load faster often means also making it more secure?
Kill two glyphs with one stone by subseting, embedding and randomizing your own webfonts. See actual performance benchmarks (for once), and learn some hacks that would drive every would be type-pirate crazy (really). |

Season 2, episode 8
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

BE the difference: Big Brothers Big Sisters
Roll back
| description |

There are currently 2,400 children on the Big Brothers Big Sisters waitlist in the Portland and Vancouver metropolitan area. Many of the children come from foster care or single parent households and hope to one day meet a caring friend through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
In an effort to locate new volunteers, weâve launched the BE the difference campaign, a 100 day (June 17 - September 25) initiative that aims to bring 500 new friendships to children in the Portland and Vancouver metropolitan area.
When you become a Big Brother, Big Sister, or Big Couple, you bring hope to a child in need. And you do it simply by spending a few hours a week together doing the things you already like to do. You are a friend and mentor; not a parent. You are providing a life-changing friendship by simply spending time together.
As a volunteer, you are not alone. At Big Brothers Big Sisters you are professionally supported from day one. We will interview you to learn about your interests, concerns, time and geographic availability. After the match is made, professional case managers support the match and assist you with any issues that may arise. In addition, our activities department will provide fun outing and event opportunities for you and your Little Brother or Little Sister.
To help change the life of a child, contact the agency by visiting bbbsnorthwest.org or by calling Heath Berg at (503) 249-4859.

WhereCampPDX is a free unconference focusing on all things geographical. This informal meeting of minds welcomes all geo-locative enthusiasts, anyone who asks âwhere am Iâ or feels the need to âknow their placeâ.
An unconference is a conference planned by the participants, we all convene together, plan sessions, and have break-outs into sessions. This gives everybody an opportunity to bring to the table the things that interest them the most and lets us talk about new topics that are still new and exploratory. Part of what is important to hearing new voices and getting new ideas is lowering barriers to participation â this event is free and it is driven by the participants. |

This month's topic: TBD
----------
PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, the Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=24 ).

This month's topic: Rich Internet Clients: A moderated, but open discussion
on what is the "right technology" for an internet application.
Bring your opinions, experience and personal bias and join in a lively discussion on a highly pertinent topic.
Topical questions include but are not limited to:
Applications written using HTML, CSS and Java Script (DHTML) have some advantages but what requirements, if any, would sway a project towards -Flash, Applets or Java F/X?
Is there significant differences between consumer versus business based applications that would cause cause a particular technology to be used?
Are they days of Flash numbered or is the current trend towards pure DHTML doomed because of fragmentation in the browser market?
Moderator: Brian Mason

Season 2, episode 7
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Portland Functional Programming Study Group: "Reinventing Wheeler" and more
Roll back
| description |
PRESENTATIONS
1. "Reinventing Wheeler" by Matt Youell -- Wheeler is a lazy, imperative, declarative language with no functions and no objects. Some languages try to eliminate state. In Wheeler state is the primary abstraction. Wheeler is very early in development and is at a stage where feedback from the technical community would be greatly appreciated.
<i>ABOUT: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional languages, including Haskell, Erlang, OCaml, Scala, and others. The group meets regularly and provides presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. The meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month.
VENUE: We're at the Roots Organic Brewing events room this month, at the corner of Clay and SE 7th. The room's entrance is the glass double doors on Clay, there will be a "pdxfunc" sign on them. There's also an interior entrance in the bar, ask the bartender how to get to the events room or look for a "pdxfunc" sign on a pair of solid double doors.</i>
