CouchDB intro – OpenSourcery Join us November 5th at 6 PM for Chris Anderson's introduction to the CouchDB framework. Chris is a Portland-based entrepreneur at Grabb.it and the co-author of an upcoming O'Reilly book on CouchDB. Apache CouchDB is a distributed, fault-tolerant and schema-free document-oriented database accessible via a RESTful HTTP/JSON API. Among other features, it provides robust, incremental replication with bi-directional conflict detection and resolution, and is queryable and indexable using a table-oriented view engine with JavaScript acting as the default view definition language. CouchDB is written in Erlang, but can be easily accessed from any environment that provides means to make HTTP requests. There are a multitude of third-party client libraries that make this even easier for a variety of programming languages and environments. This event is free to the public. In order to accommodate the appropriate number of attendees, please rsvp to: [email protected]. The event takes place at OpenSourcery: 711 SE Ankeny (on Ankeny and SE 7th, one block south of Burnside). We encourage biking and public transportation. |

Portland JavaScript Admirers' Monthly Meeting – Jive Software This month Max Ogden will be on hand to talk about Couchappspora < http://github.com/maxogden/couchappspora >, the social communication revolution that he has started. Couchappspora is inspired by Diaspora < http://www.joindiaspora.com/ > but is built as a couchapp using CouchDB < http://couchdb.apache.org/ >. In addition, Jesse Hallett will present an end-to-end tutorial on how to set up JSTestDriver < http://code.google.com/p/js-test-driver/ > to automate the process of running QUnit tests < http://docs.jquery.com/Qunit > using QUnitTestRunnerPlugin < http://github.com/jivesoftware/QUnitTestRunnerPlugin >. We have had talks on testing before, including a great talk from Duncan Beevers on simulating time with Bobble < http://github.com/duncanbeevers/bobble >. In this talk Jesse will focus on automation and asynchronous tests, including more discussion on when simulated time or asynchronicity is the better choice and when to mix and match. There will be pizza provided by Jive Software. Feel free to join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs if you too are a JavaScript admirer. Couchbase Meetup – Vintage Plaza, Tuscany A and B Room PLEASE RSVP AT http://couchbase-meetup-pdx-erec.eventbrite.com/ In conjunction with JSConf, Couchbase will be in Portland for this one-time meetup! Our own J. Chris Anderson and Dustin Sallings will be hosting an afternoon event. In this live coding tutorial, they will take you from never having downloaded CouchDB or Couchbase, all the way through to a running jQuery-based real time chat app. We will also have some lightning talks by some of our community members. Thanks to JSConf and Update Portland for helping us put this together. Couchbase is the name of the new NoSQL database company and product family created through the merger of CouchOne and Membase. Couchbase products, which are built on Apache CouchDB, Membase, and memcached open source software, represent the most comprehensive family of data management solutions for building scalable web and mobile applications, with indexing, flexible querying and ease of use that developers love; and elastic clustering, robust storage management and consistently high performance relied on by system administrators and operators. Couchbase is a privately held company funded by Accel Partners, Mayfield Fund, North Bridge Venture Partners and Redpoint Ventures. www.couchbase.com |

Portland Erlang / Elixir Social Hour – Lucky Labrador Brew Pub It's summertime in Portland! Rather than work our brains too hard in the heat, let's just get together, socialize, chat and show off anything we happen to be working on. Meetup with us at the Lucky Lab on SE Hawethorne. Look for the Erlang laptop stickers! We'll get back to having speakers in September. Stay tuned for news about Erlang at OSCON. |
