Building Refactoring Tools for Functional Languages
Details:
* Presenter: Prof. Simon Thompson
* Date: Thursday, March 25, 2010
* Time: 10:30am
Abstract: Refactoring is the process of changing the design of a program without changing what it does. Typical refactorings, such as function extraction and generalisation, are intended to make a program more amenable to extension, more comprehensible and so on. Refactorings differ from other sorts of program transformation in being applied to source code (rather than within the bowels of a compiler), and in having an effect across a code base. Because of this, there is a need to give (semi-)automated support to the process. This talk will reflect on our experience of building tools to refactor functional programs written in Haskell (HaRe?) and Erlang (Wrangler). In doing this we will address system design, the pragmatics of system take-up, as well as contrasting the style of refactoring and tooling for Haskell and Erlang.
Bio: Simon Thompson is a Professor of Logic and Computation at the University of Kent. |

Visualization and Diversity Information
Details:
* Presenter: Prof. Ron Metoyer
* Date: Wednesday, March 24, 2010
* Time: 10:30am
Abstract: The term âdiversityââ is used in many ways in many domains. People are concerned about the diversity of their work force, stock portfolios, student body, and forest insects, just to name a few. In this talk, I will discuss a work-in-progress visualization technique specifically designed to communicate diversity information. I will present the design concerns, resulting visualizations, and a study design for evaluating the method. I will conclude with a discussion of a case-study application to moth species data.
Bio: Ronald Metoyer is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University. He earned a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology where he worked in the Graphics, Visualization and Usability Center with a focus on modeling and visualizing the motion of pedestrians in urban and architectural scenes. Dr. Metoyer currently co-directs the NVIDIA Graphics and Imaging Technologies Lab (GAIT) with his colleagues at OSU. His past research efforts have involved the investigation of techniques for manipulating motion capture data and for facilitating the creation of 3D content by end users with the goal of empowering domain experts to create compelling and interactive content for their domain specific needs. In 2002, he received an NSF CAREER Award for his work in âUnderstanding the Complexities of Animated Contentâ. Dr. Metoyerâs most recent research interests fall under the domain of information visualization.

TITLE: Scientific Data Visualization in a GPU World
Details:
* Presenter: Prof. Mike Bailey
* Date: Wednesday, March 24, 2010
* Time: 11:00am
Abstract: One of the fun aspects of scientific data visualization is that there are no rules — anything that adds insight to the data display is fair game. Add that to the fun of custom-programming the GPU, and you’ve really got something!
This talk will discuss some of the uses of custom GPU programming to create better and more interactive visualization displays. We will look at techniques in the realm of scalar visualization, vector visualization, volume visualization, and terrain mapping.

<strong>Applying the Concept of Wicked Problems and 7 Principles for Dealing with Them presented by Bill Gilmore</strong>
Networking @ 6:00 PM; Seminar 7:00-8:00 PM
This is a free seminar open to the public. Hosted by the Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN).
<h3>Abstract</h3>
Many of you may have heard about "wicked problems". For example, in many cases one can define the problem, then pursue a solution; but with wicked problems, one can't define the problem well until they finally have the solution. Wicked problems have several other interesting characteristics as well. An approach of "taming wicked problems" contradicts the wisdom of trying to make the nature and complexity of the solution fit the nature and
complexity of the problem.
The concept of wicked problems can be used as a paradigm for understanding many real world situations, including many in software development, managing teams and leading projects, organizational change, strategic planning, and more. In this presentation, you'll hear about 7 principles that can be applied for dealing with wicked problems. We'll look at several examples of problems, some more wicked than others, and how to analyze and deal with them. We'll also look at several seminal ideas in software engineering and see how the principles were used. Finally, we'll gather some problems from the audience and practice characterizing the problems and applying the principles for planning how to cope with them.
<h3>Speaker Bio</h3>
Bill Gilmore has worked in software engineering for over 20 years in various development, management, process and consulting roles. He worked in two small companies, then worked at the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon. He moved to Oregon in 1993 to head up the Software Process Improvement program at Tektronix. Most recently he worked at Intel for 10 years with several product teams and business groups on software product quality, product life cycles and several areas of software engineering. He led CMM and product life cycle assessments and organized and led follow-on improvement programs. Today, Bill is the President of the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC). Bill has a Ph.D. in Astronomy; has published papers in Software Engineering, Strategic Planning, and Astronomy; and has presented at several conferences.
<h3>A Special Treat from PNSQC</h3>
Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will have pizza provided by PNSQC beginning at 6:00 pm.
PNSQC is the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, a group of volunteers interested in Software Quality. The Mission of the PNSQC is to enable knowledge exchange to produce higher quality software. As a non-profit, it seeks to promote software quality by providing education and opportunities for information exchange within the software community.
<h3>About Rose City SPIN</h3>
The Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) is a monthly forum for networking, mutual support, and promotion of effective software practices. We exchange practical experiences, ideas, knowledge, wisdom, and war stories about the technical, business, and human facets of software process improvement. The Rose City SPIN serves the software development community of the Portland/Vancouver metro area. Whether you work for a large company or a small one, corporate or self-employed, industrial or academic setting, you are welcome at the Rose City SPIN.

EPISODE #5!
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to the 3rd weekly PDX TechCoffee. One commit a week is all we ask.
NOTE: We've had some wifi problems in the past, so i recommend having what you need to work locally on your laptop before you come by. |

Building Refactoring Tools for Functional Languages
Details:
* Presenter: Prof. Simon Thompson
* Date: Thursday, March 25, 2010
* Time: 10:30am

Galois is pleased to host two tech talks on Wed., March 24.
Visualization and Diversity Information
Details:
* Presenter: Prof. Ron Metoyer
* Date: Wednesday, March 24, 2010
* Time: 10:30am
Dr. Metoyerâs most recent research interests fall under the domain of information visualization.

pdxfiber's Reach Portland: Play in the world's largest "telephone game"
Roll back
| description |
Portland Attempts World Record to get Googleâs attention.
Worldâs longest âTelephone Gameâ needs only 700 people.
A group of citizens are organizing the worldâs longest âTelephone Gameâ as an attempt to get the attention of Google.
The Technology giant has put out a Request For Information (RFI) to municipalities who may be interested in partnering with Google to install a 1 gigabyte fiber optic network that will serve 50,000 to 500,000 homes.
The RFI has already caused quite a stir among cities large and small across America. In an attempt to gain the favor of the company, one city, Topeka, Kansas decided to change its name to Google for a day.
The City of Portland is taking the proposal seriously and will be adopting a resolution Wednesday, March 17th to provide a proposal to the search engine colossus. The project would be a significant undertaking for Google. Estimates are that they would need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to lay a fiber optic network in most cities, whereas in Portland, City efforts to facilitate it have already tilled the fields for high-speed broadband.
The significance of the project is that it would provide speeds of one hundred times greater than is available today in the United States, potentially spurring innovative, revenue generating businesses and jobs in the city that is awarded the prize.
A group of citizens in the technology and creative industries clusters have joined in the effort to âWoo the Googâ, since the RFI states that citizen involvement will be a deciding factor in awarding the fiber network.
The Game will stretch from Pioneer Courthouse Square, and attempt to cross the Steel Bridge to the steps of the Rose Garden arena. The event will begin at 9am Saturday March 20th, and the record-breaking Telephone game attempt will start at the east side of the Steel Bridge at 9:30, reaching Mayor Sam Adams in Pioneer Courthouse Square at approximately 10:30. All who are interested are encouraged to meet at the corner of NW Couch and Naito Parkway.

Details to come... |

We're going to just have a casual meeting this month, so we can hang out, talk about whatever project or bit of code has captured your attention of late, and drink beer. We'll be meeting concurrently with the fine folks at the PDX Weekly Hackathon, so there should be plenty of discussion of quite a varied nature. Feel free to come out and hack on things, of course! |

Oregonâs economy is facing great challenges. The state is struggling with serious budgetary shortfalls and that is exacerbated by an unemployment rate that is hovering above 10 percent. The Free Agent Formula + IASECPâs Tools, Experience, Guidance = Triumph!
âI was immediately impressed by the highly practical nature of the Free Agent Formula. The experience-based wisdom, clear case studies and step-by-step advice demonstrate what works, but perhaps more important, what doesnât.â
Todd Henry
Founder and President
The Accidental Creative Company
Learn the smart way to build a solo-based business. Weâve got the blueprint to turbo-charge your success â The Free Agent Formula. If youâre a consultant, designer, freelancer, copywriter, photographer, entrepreneur â hereâs your personal road map to making more money, creating more opportunities and to finally finding the freedom youâre looking for.
Small is the new big. Whether youâre still in the starting blocks or your existing business needs fine tuning, youâll learn how to focus your time, energy, and money.
Hereâs a statistic: In 1980, 75% of the jobs in the communication and creative services industries
were outsourced or âfreelanceâ. By 2000, that number was 99%. Thatâs a big change.
Nearly two decades ago, we saw change in the air. Many of us went through multiple layoffs and began âfreelancingâ to find stability and a measure of control. No longer was it enough to âget an education, earn your degree, and work hardâ.
Weâre on a mission to help others in our industries struggling with this seismic shift in our economy. Over the past 12 years, we have been through the fire and have emerged as a strong and innovative community. I was thrilled to find the Free Agent Formula! It helps to boil down so many lessons learned. When combined with the experience and mentorship available only through IASECPâs Self-Employed Academy, youâll find a dynamic package to get your solo-based business ready to not only earn income quickly â but youâll get on the road to building your own empire! Weâve added our experience, real-live examples and tons of tools and tips, and more. Plus bonuses and extras that you wonât find anywhere else.
The Secret to Freelance Business Success | Build Your Own Empire
We start with the 6-step formula to create your customized business foundation plus you design the action steps to get you on the road â and then we walk with you down that road. Weâve been down it before. This program is not about the old-style management-heavy business model of the past. Itâs about creating the lifestyle that only todayâs technology-based solopreneur can develop. We focus on keeping your overhead low so your income can be high.
Interested?
Join us for an hour webinar on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 2:00 PM (Pacific time) and we'll share the beans.
Can't make it at that time, that's OK. This event will be recorded so you can listen whenever it works for you. Not only is the event free, but we'd like to offer you a free PowerPoint presentation called Consulting in the New Economy just for joining us.
Don't be shy! Bring a friend...No driving involved. We'll show you that not only is this the best time to work for yourself - but you don't have to do it alone!

Portland Java User Group: Teaching Girls and Boys to Program Computers
Roll back
| description |
This month's topic: Teaching Girls and Boys to Program Computers
Why is it that the percentage of women graduating with computer science degrees around 50% in countries like Sweden, China and India, but less than 20% in America? As a "Geekdad" with a daughter, I found this unacceptable, and decided to do something about it... I went back to school... elementary school that is, to teach programming to the kids. My goal was to find an environment and a style that would encourage girls with curiosity to enjoy being controlling computers in creative ways, and in the process, encourage and involve every kid.
My talk discusses the journey of coming up with a girl-friendly curriculum for teaching programming that boys wouldn't notice anything different. I then show off some of the new crop of "Integrated Learning Environments", i.e. Alice, E-Toys and Scratch. I finally give an overview of my "Computer Club" and how others can use what I've done to teach others.
----------
Speaker: Howard Abrams
My first job in high school was teaching Basic and Logo programming to 8 year old kids; however, I haven't taught since graduating from college. After programming for 25 years (and Java for 12), I'm now intrigue about returning to my roots and working with the next generation.
----------
PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, usually at McMenamin's Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://www.mcmenamins.com/328 (but sometimes this changes).
