Writing Testable code. You all know by now that you should be unit testing your code, but do you know how? It is unfortunately really easy in flex to architect code which is very difficult to test. In this session, we will explore how to build components and applications in flex which are inherently testable, and see how we test them.
Join us Thursday, October 14, for food and networking at 5:30 PM sponsored by Thetus Corporation in association with the PDXRIA User Group. Our speaker, Michael Labriola starts at 6 PM.
Michael Labriola is a Senior Consultant at Digital Primates and the Lead Developer for FlexUnit 4. He has been developing Internet applications since 1995 and working with Flex since its 1.0 beta. Michael is an Adobe Certified Instructor, Community Professional, and co-author of the Flex 2, 3 and 4 Training from the Source books and Breaking out of the Browser with Adobe AIR.
As an international speaker and team mentor on Flex and AIR projects, he has consulted for many of the worldâs most recognized brands. His free time is spent escaping from technology through wine and food.

Everyone needs to be under the Apple NDA; the easiest way to do that is to sign up for the Mac or iOS developer program (the free registration is fine).
A general Q&A session will follow the presentations, and then we will adjourn for beer.

IEEE Oregon - Cognitive Networks/Dynamic Spectrum Access in Wireless Networks
Roll back
description
Distinguished IEEE Speaker: Zhensheng Zhang of Argon ST (formerly SDRC)
<p>
Date: Thursday, November 4, 2010<br/>
Time: 6:00-8:00 PM<br/>
</p>
Place: Tektronix Conference Center (Bldg 38), 3025 SW Zworykin Ave, Beaverton, OR 97005
Agenda:
6:00 PM â Social
7:00 PM - Speaker
In this talk, we present a high level overview on the recent development of the cognitive radios/dynamical spectrum access (DSA) techniques, focusing on the following areas: characteristics of the available bandwidth of the primary users, sensing technologies and sensing intervals to detect white spaces, spectrum allocation schemes (graph coloring, game theory, machine learning), tradeoff between spectrum/performance gain versus additional overhead used in implementing DSA. Some of tradeoff studies are presented in terms of price of anarchy, which is defined as the price that a decentralized system should pay for not being coordinated. We will also present a brief overview of the security issues associated with DSA networks, including communications, jamming/attacks and anti-jamming, standards activities in cognitive networks and current projects related to DSA.
Biography:
Dr. Zhensheng Zhang received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Zhang has over twenty years experience in design and analysis of network architecture, protocols and control algorithms. He is currently with Argon ST (formerly SDRC), Principal Scientist, Networking Research, serving as Principal Investigator for many Department of Defense (DOD) projects. He worked at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, and Columbia University, focusing on research and development in high speed networks and wireless networks. Dr. Zhang severed as Editor of IEEE Transaction on Wireless Communications from 2002 to 2006 and as Guest Editor for the IEEE JSAC special issue on Overlay Networks, 2003 and the Journal of Wireless Networks issue on multimedia wireless networks, 1996. XPDX: Unit Test Show and Tell
Roll back
description
We're going to do a group activity on TDD. Please bring some tests -- good, bad, or interesting / enlightening in some way. (A USB stick is a good idea.) Weâre going to discuss them, refactor them as a group, and generally use them as the fixed points around which we can discuss all things that improve our ability to design well (since design is what TDD is about)
Pizza and networking at 6:30; meeting at 7; beer and discussion afterwards. |

XPDX June: artisanal retro-futurism crossed with team-scale anarcho-syndicalism
Roll back
description
Brian Marick is in town to talk with us about the spirit of Agile:
A problem with the word âAgileâ is that everyone already thinks they understand it at a gut level. Worse, everyone already thinks theyâre agile in spirit. (After all, the thesaurus tells us the alternative is to be clumsy, stiff, slow, and dull.) So itâs too easy for people to feel free to launch into âdoing Agileâ without ever having a serious conversation about what that actually means.
This problem is easily fixed. Weâll just stop talking about âAgileâ and start speaking of âartisanal retro-futurism crossed with team-scale anarcho-syndicalism.â There is, I think, no danger that anyone will reflexively say, âYes! Thatâs just what Iâve been wanting to do all along!â
The new name does more than just encourage conversation. It encourages conversation about those very properties of Agile that have become obscure as Agile has been commoditized. In this session, Iâll unpack the meanings of the new phrase and encourage you to rediscover whatâs been lost.

Reaching the Tipping Point in Energy Monitoring
Roll back
description
Monitoring your Energy Footprint
Smart Devices and information systems to help people make better choices about how they use energy are in the early stage of adoption. While many home energy monitoring solutions have been introduced in recent years, no products or services have emerged that have brought about a significant change in consumer behavior. While many devices are technologically sophisticated or cool to look at it seems there is still a need for new innovations and better ways to motivate users to make a lasting change in their energy footprint. The challenge for product developers and entrepreneurs is the development of a comprehensive energy monitoring system for homes that is compelling, easy to use and effective.
The Prius dashboard is a good example of a system that is making a real difference in consumer behavior. By providing information to a user on mileage and energy performance it is motivating people to change their driving style. We need to explore ways in which we can have a similar impact on managing oneâs personal energy lifestyle. How do you create energy monitoring devices with intuitive interfaces and automatic functions that customers can easily integrate into their daily life? How will consumers be informed about what is possible and how will energy utilities, governments, agencies, or retail channels work to supply the demand? What other issues must be overcome before we see mass adoption of smart energy management devices. We will explore these issues and hear from manufacturers of existing products so that participants can leave with a better understanding of energy monitoring opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:
The scaling of CMOS technology dimensions has led to phenomenal growth in transistor density and performance during the last four decades. However, recently the industry has started to experience significant challenges in achieving historical transistor performance gains through traditional dimensional scaling. Intel has been at the forefront in addressing these challenges by successfully driving transistor innovations from research phase to mainstream CMOS manufacturing. Implementation of uniaxial strained-silicon transistors at the 90nm node and the “HiK+Metal Gate” transistors for the 45nm node are two excellent examples of major innovations by Intel which have demonstrated dramatic performance enhancement. After a general review of technology evolution trends, I will discuss how these specific innovations have enabled dramatic performance enhancement for the recent CMOS nodes and describe specific challenges which had to be overcome to expedite their implementation into mainstream CMOS manufacturing.
In the second part of my talk, I will present how future innovations in device architecture, novel process modules and material systems have the potential to successfully address upcoming scaling challenges in a power-limited era. This talk will highlight a list of open fundamental challenges which need to be successfully addressed before these new innovations can be implemented into mainstream CMOS technology.

Inspiration - The Force Behind Innovation
Inspiration is a new series of events presented by TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs)Oregon that will focus on the bedrock of all entrepreneurial endeavors. Successful entrepreneurship requires several elements - inspiration, innovation and if you are focused on the outcome - sound business strategy. However, this series will focus on the creativity that drives the process - the journey, not the destination.
This event will feature two inspired engineers, Ward Cunningham, CTO of AboutUs.org and the engineer who pioneered the technology behind Wikipedia and came up with the term "Wiki", and Matt Tucker, CTO and co-founder of Jive Software. Ward will talk about the inspiration behind the Wiki technology, his journey through its growth and the future of Wikipedia. Matt will discuss collaboration software
