SplashCast, launched in 2007, was originally founded around the notion of helping consumers put together videos, text, graphics and music embedded in broadcast "channels." Despite raising over $4 million in funding, SplashCast was unable to survive and closed its doors in 2009.
Please join OEN for the April 14th PubTalk to hear what happened, and what the team learned from failure. You will hear from one of the Founders of SplashCast, as well as a few investors in the company. This panel discussion will highlight the positive moves the company made, as well as share some valuable lessons of what to avoid. Learning from their insights and knowledge will undoubtedly help you in your decision making processes so that your company may avoid the same pitfalls.

Tom also headed up new media strategy and business development for the LA Times and business development for Knowledge Learning Corporation. Additionally, he was a consulting manager at Andersen and a transactional lawyer. He received a law degree from the University of Washington and an M.B.A. from New York University with an emphasis in finance and entrepreneurial studies.
Jon Karl
Jon is an experienced entrepreneur who co-founded two Portland companies, ieLogic and iovation. As Vice President of Corporate Development for iovation, Jon plays a role in defining the company's business strategy, and is responsible for the creation of strategic partnerships, technology alliances and mergers or acquisitions. At ieLogic, Jon was instrumental in creating and driving the company brand and technology innovation that led to the company's successful sale in just five years.
An expert in the areas of Internet security and fraud management, Jon is a frequent speaker at industry trade shows, where he speaks on various topics including online fraud management, online privacy, and emerging technologies that protect online environments against fraud and abuse.
Jon holds a B.S. in Economics from Oregon State University, and has been an active investor over the last 5 years in a diverse range of start-up ventures. He lives in Tualatin with his wife, two boys, a dozen chickens and a dog. |

Co-founder Scott Kveton will come to Mobile Portland to talk about what Urban Airship is doing and the challenges they've faced. In particular, Scott will talk about:
* Building a company selling pickaxes during a gold rush.
* The challenges of building a cross platform service for mobile.
* How Urban Airship customers are using push notification and in app purchases to increase app loyalty and revenue.

A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group.
This month we'll have a talk by David Hollingsworth on the Curl language (not to be confused with cUrl the commandline utility).
Curl is a statically typed object-oriented language that JIT-runs in a
browser plugin along with a large number of companion libraries and an IDE.
Curl also has an internal tool for compiling to C, so Curl is >90% written
in Curl. It is not related to the wget-like-library also called Curl. See
http://www.curl.com for more.
Some of the topics I can cover:
* Why we (still) need a programming language for the Internet (and why Flash/JavaFX/Silverlight ain't it).
* Mixing text and code: not the heresy XML advocates would have you believe.
* Venture Capitalists ate my syntax: switching from Lisp-y Curl to C-y Curl.
* Java Generics almost make me pine for C++ templates OR if {Array-of int} isn't a real type, your type system sucks.
* Yes, Virginia, non-normalized Unicode means operations are O(n) (aka Strings are not really arrays of chars, but they're closer in Curl).
* DSLs in Curl: source-to-source macros ala Lisp.
* Refactoring is for wimps: a strong versioning mechanism partially mitigates the need for backwards-compatibility, but not entirely.
* Plus the standard "ooh shiny" stuff.

Abstract: Refactoring is the process of changing the design of a program without changing what it does. Typical refactorings, such as function extraction and generalisation, are intended to make a program more amenable to extension, more comprehensible and so on. Refactorings differ from other sorts of program transformation in being applied to source code (rather than within the bowels of a compiler), and in having an effect across a code base. Because of this, there is a need to give (semi-)automated support to the process. This talk will reflect on our experience of building tools to refactor functional programs written in Haskell (HaRe?) and Erlang (Wrangler). Abstract: The term âdiversityââ is used in many ways in many domains. People are concerned about the diversity of their work force, stock portfolios, student body, and forest insects, just to name a few. In this talk, I will discuss a work-in-progress visualization technique specifically designed to communicate diversity information. I will present the design concerns, resulting visualizations, and a study design for evaluating the method. I will conclude with a discussion of a case-study application to moth species data.
Bio: Ronald Metoyer is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University. He earned a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology where he worked in the Graphics, Visualization and Usability Center with a focus on modeling and visualizing the motion of pedestrians in urban and architectural scenes. Dr. Metoyer currently co-directs the NVIDIA Graphics and Imaging Technologies Lab (GAIT) with his colleagues at OSU. His past research efforts have involved the investigation of techniques for manipulating motion capture data and for facilitating the creation of 3D content by end users with the goal of empowering domain experts to create compelling and interactive content for their domain specific needs. In 2002, he received an NSF CAREER Award for his work in âUnderstanding the Complexities of Animated Contentâ. Dr. Metoyerâs most recent research interests fall under the domain of information visualization.

Abstract: One of the fun aspects of scientific data visualization is that there are no rules — anything that adds insight to the data display is fair game. Add that to the fun of custom-programming the GPU, and you’ve really got something!
This talk will discuss some of the uses of custom GPU programming to create better and more interactive visualization displays. We will look at techniques in the realm of scalar visualization, vector visualization, volume visualization, and terrain mapping.

<h3>Abstract</h3>
Many of you may have heard about "wicked problems". For example, in many cases one can define the problem, then pursue a solution; but with wicked problems, one can't define the problem well until they finally have the solution. Wicked problems have several other interesting characteristics as well. An approach of "taming wicked problems" contradicts the wisdom of trying to make the nature and complexity of the solution fit the nature and
complexity of the problem.
The concept of wicked problems can be used as a paradigm for understanding many real world situations, including many in software development, managing teams and leading projects, organizational change, strategic planning, and more. In this presentation, you'll hear about 7 principles that can be applied for dealing with wicked problems. We'll look at several examples of problems, some more wicked than others, and how to analyze and deal with them. We'll also look at several seminal ideas in software engineering and see how the principles were used. Finally, we'll gather some problems from the audience and practice characterizing the problems and applying the principles for planning how to cope with them.
<h3>Speaker Bio</h3>
Bill Gilmore has worked in software engineering for over 20 years in various development, management, process and consulting roles. He worked in two small companies, then worked at the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon. He moved to Oregon in 1993 to head up the Software Process Improvement program at Tektronix. Most recently he worked at Intel for 10 years with several product teams and business groups on software product quality, product life cycles and several areas of software engineering. He led CMM and product life cycle assessments and organized and led follow-on improvement programs. Today, Bill is the President of the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC). Bill has a Ph.D. in Astronomy; has published papers in Software Engineering, Strategic Planning, and Astronomy; and has presented at several conferences.

Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will have pizza provided by PNSQC beginning at 6:00 pm.
PNSQC is the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, a group of volunteers interested in Software Quality. The Mission of the PNSQC is to enable knowledge exchange to produce higher quality software. As a non-profit, it seeks to promote software quality by providing education and opportunities for information exchange within the software community.

TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to the 3rd weekly PDX TechCoffee. One commit a week is all we ask.
NOTE: We've had some wifi problems in the past, so i recommend having what you need to work locally on your laptop before you come by. |

TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to the 3rd weekly PDX TechCoffee. One commit a week is all we ask.
NOTE: We've had some wifi problems in the past, so i recommend having what you need to work locally on your laptop before you come by. |

Building Refactoring Tools for Functional Languages

Abstract: Refactoring is the process of changing the design of a program without changing what it does. Typical refactorings, such as function extraction and generalisation, are intended to make a program more amenable to extension, more comprehensible and so on. Refactorings differ from other sorts of program transformation in being applied to source code (rather than within the bowels of a compiler), and in having an effect across a code base. Because of this, there is a need to give (semi-)automated support to the process. This talk will reflect on our experience of building tools to refactor functional programs written in Haskell (HaRe?) and Erlang (Wrangler). In doing this we will address system design, the pragmatics of system take-up, as well as contrasting the style of refactoring and tooling for Haskell and Erlang.

Visualization and Diversity Information

Abstract: The term âdiversityââ is used in many ways in many domains. People are concerned about the diversity of their work force, stock portfolios, student body, and forest insects, just to name a few. In this talk, I will discuss a work-in-progress visualization technique specifically designed to communicate diversity information. I will present the design concerns, resulting visualizations, and a study design for evaluating the method. I will conclude with a discussion of a case-study application to moth species data.
Bio: Ronald Metoyer is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University. He earned a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology where he worked in the Graphics, Visualization and Usability Center with a focus on modeling and visualizing the motion of pedestrians in urban and architectural scenes. Dr. Metoyer currently co-directs the NVIDIA Graphics and Imaging Technologies Lab (GAIT) with his colleagues at OSU. His past research efforts have involved the investigation of techniques for manipulating motion capture data and for facilitating the creation of 3D content by end users with the goal of empowering domain experts to create compelling and interactive content for their domain specific needs. In 2002, he received an NSF CAREER Award for his work in âUnderstanding the Complexities of Animated Contentâ. Dr. Metoyerâs most recent research interests fall under the domain of information visualization.
