Tech Talk: Categories are Databases
Roll back
description |

Galois is pleased to host the following tech talk. These talks are open to the interested public. Please join us!
IMPORTANT: Please note that this talk is Thursday.
title:
Categories are Databases
presenter:
Dr. David Spivak
time:
10:30 am, 03 June 2010, Thursday
location
Galois Inc.
421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR, USA
(3rd floor of the Commonwealth building)
abstract:
Category theory is a powerful language for organizing layers of abstraction in all areas of mathematics. Databases are powerful tools for organizing information of all sorts. Whereas categories are often considered hopelessly abstract, databases are often considered horrifically mundane. Thus it is either strange or fitting that, mathematically speaking, categories and databases are the same concept. In this talk I’ll show how to turn any database into a category and any category into a database. I’ll also discuss functors and how they may be useful for issues of data migration and merging.
bio:
David Spivak graduated with a PhD in mathematics from UC Berkeley in 2007; his thesis used higher category theory to fix an old problem in geometry. From 2007 to the present, he have been a postdoc at the University of Oregon in the Math Department. During this time, his focus has moved toward the idea of using category theory to understand information and communication. This summer, he will become a mathematics postdoc at MIT for three years, focusing on information and communication from a category-theoretic perspective. |

A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group.
We're out on the west side but all are welcome.
It seems a lot of regular attendees have OSBridge presentations to do, so this month we'll show our presentation prototypes and get feedback.

speaker: Ingy döt Net
Ingy will give a talk about:
<ul>
<li>Acmeism - Programming above programming languages
<li>C'Dent - A portable module programming language
<li>Stardoc - An Acmeist documentation system
<li>TestML - An Acmeist unit test language
</ul>
Imagine writing a Perl module, and then uploading it to RubyGems and PyPi and a dozen other language repositories as a native module for that language. C'Dent compiles modules Perl, Python, Ruby and JavaScript modules to many languages. Stardoc reformats POD to many other formats. TestML lets you write one set of tests that all the compiled modules must pass before shipping.
This is the future. This is Acmeism.
As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.

DFRWS 2010 - Early Registration Ends
Roll back
description |

Early registration ends for DFRWS 2010 digital forensics conference. Register before this date to save $75.
The conference itself runs August 2-4.
About the Conference:
The annual DFRWS conference allows leading digital forensics researchers from government, industry, and academia to present their work and results to fellow researchers and practitioners. Many of the most cited digital forensics papers have been presented at DFRWS and the annual challenge has spawned research in important areas. Initial results and tool prototypes are also presented during the Works in Progress and demo sessions.
The conference typically has about 100 people and is therefore small enough so that attendees meet each other and can interact with the speakers. A tradition of DFRWS as been its casual and interactive atmosphere where break out sessions exist to discuss topics related to the presentations. There are also opportunities to interact during the welcome reception and banquet. After the banquet, attendees can put their forensics skills to the test when they form teams to participate in the annual Forensics Rodeo, which is a challenge that requires participants to analyze data and answer questions. |

<blockquote><em>HipHop for PHP isn't technically a compiler itself. Rather it is a source code transformer. HipHop programmatically transforms your PHP source code into highly optimized C++ and then uses g++ to compile it. HipHop executes the source code in a semantically equivalent manner and sacrifices some rarely used features â such as eval() â in exchange for improved performance. HipHop includes a code transformer, a reimplementation of PHP's runtime system, and a rewrite of many common PHP Extensions to take advantage of these performance optimizations.</em></blockquote> |

NOTE: Please RSVP using the link below, as well.
Recently the Portland Development Commission conducted a web-based interview to explore ways to increase the competitive advantages of our software industry. We would like to invite you to a meeting to discuss the results of this interview.
When: Wednesday, May 26th from 4:30 to 6:30
Where: Wieden + Kennedy (224 Northwest 13th Avenue, Portland OR 97209-2977)
The web-based interview revealed 4 critical areas that are impacting the success of our region's software professionals.
* Education
* Investment
* Political Engagement
* Taxes & Fees
The goal of the meeting will be to vet the ideas shared in this dialog and brainstorm other ways for the PDC to help address these issues.
Based on the results of this meeting, we will go out to the larger community with a second web-based interview to make sure that we're giving the PDC advice that reflects the entire region.

So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Tech for Tomorrow: How to Win the Sustainable Innovation Race
Roll back
description |

We all know Ghandi once said: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Many of us are pretty good at practicing that principle in our personal lives, but what about at work? The goal of this one day workshop is to motivate and educate potential “change agents” in the high tech and IT industries on how to use the scientifically-based framework of The Natural Step (TNS) in launching successful sustainability initiatives in their organization. You can then apply this framework and the new ways of thinking presented in this course to make you and your organization more innovative, more competitive and ultimately more sustainable.
Training Objectives: What You Will Learn
* A whole systems perspective for considering sustainability
* The Natural Step framework, including the four system conditions
* The basic science underlying The Natural Step Framework
* How the framework is used for decision making and strategic planning
* Suggested ideas for applying the TNS framework in technology organizations
* Resources for fresh ideas and assistance when you wonder what to do next
* Through case studies, how organizations have benefited from implementing the framework

Presented by Dr. Gerwin Klein.
Last year, the NICTA L4.verifed project produced a formal machine-checked Isabelle/HOL proof that the C code of the seL4 OS microkernel correctly implements its abstract implementation. This talk will give an overview of the proof together with its main implications and assumptions, and will show in which kinds of systems this formally verified kernel can be used for gaining assurance on overall system security. |

Raising the Bar at Intel: A Project Retrospective Case Study (Rose City SPIN Seminar)
Roll back
description |

<h2>Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) Seminar</h2>
Dates/Times: Thursday, May 27th, 2010; Networking @ 6:00 PM with Pizza; Seminar 7:00-8:00 PM
This event is free and open to the public.
<h2>Abstract</h2>
Retrospectives can be one of the most effective tools in process improvement. They allow projects and organizations to identify the key issues and improvements for success and provide a platform to create buy in and clear steps to implement positive change. Come join Debra Lavell from Intel Corp. as she shares a case study taken from a real project from Intel, where a project manager has been asked to gather and share key learnings from a very important software program. The twist â this team has zero travel budget, complex cross-organizational cultural differences, and a high level of resistance to change. Debra will discuss how a retrospective is different from other review practices such as post mortems, after action reviews, etc. She will explain the four phases of a retrospective process with emphasis on the role of the facilitator so when you leave, you can design and deliver an effective retrospective when you get back to your organizations.
<h2>Speaker Bio</h2>
Debra Lavell is the Organizational Learning & Retrospective Program Manager in the Corporate Platform Office at Intel Corporation. With over 10 years of experience, Debra has delivered over 300 Project and Milestone Retrospectives for Intel world-wide. Prior to her work in quality, Debra spent over 5 years managing an IT department responsible for a 500+-node network for ADC Telecommunications. Debra is a member of the Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) Steering Committee. She currently is the President of the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, Portland, Oregon. She holds a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Management with an emphasis on Industrial Relations
<h2>A Special Treat from PNSQC</h2>
Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will have pizza and soda provided by PNSQC beginning at 6:00 pm.
PNSQC is the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, a group of volunteers interested in Software Quality. The Mission of the PNSQC is to enable knowledge exchange to produce higher quality software. As a non-profit, it seeks to promote software quality by providing education and opportunities for information exchange within the software community.

NOTE: Please RSVP using the link below.
* Education
* Investment
* Political Engagement
* Taxes & Fees
The goal of the meeting will be to vet the ideas shared in this dialog and brainstorm other ways for the PDC to help address these issues.
Based on the results of this meeting, we will go out to the larger community with a second web-based interview to make sure that we're giving the PDC advice that reflects the entire region.

PDXPHP - Meeting with Haiping Zhao of Facebook
Roll back
description |

I'm Very pleased to announce that <a href="http://www.facebook.com/hzhao">Haiping</a>, Senior Server Engineer at facebook and main engineer behind <a href="http://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/358">HipHop for PHP</a> will be meeting with the PDXPHP group on June 3rd.  HipHop is one of the major developments in the PHP-verse as of late and it's announcement certainly generated quite a bit of hubbub.  Be sure to come down to learn all about HipHop and related work, plus what it's like being an engineer at Facebook.

PDX Django May Meeting
Roll back
description |

Our next meeting is Wednesday, May 19th, at the usual place & time: 7pm at PIE (1227 NW Davis St). This week we'll hear from Lennon Day-Reynolds about his in-house model migration library, and from Jeff "rozwell" Kistler about fromagerie [1], his private package index reusable app. In addition, we're putting together a few lightning talks covering some of the things new in Django 1.2 [2].
So far we've got Chris McDonald on what's new in the feed class, myself on the new CSRF protection system, and Dermot Maty on Multi-DB. We've got room for a couple more, so why not add your name to the list?
