There are a ton of questions. And the answers only come with experience. The good news? Gaining that experience is easier than you might think.
Join Rick Turoczy as he shares some quick tips on how to start participating in social media, getting your bearings, and understanding how you can become a valued member of communities that match your startup's goals.

Tonight we'll have the first of our Semantic Web application demos. Three lovely volunteers will be showing actual applications that use Semantic Web technologies in various states of development.
Brian Panulla will show a system for building and interacting with rubrics - tools for educators to facilitate assessment and grading of student assignments.
Leif Warner will be demonstrating a semantic web system modeling complex and shifting state of the local Portland music scene.
Paul Daigle will be demonstrating a semantic system for identity management. The model cross-links between authenticated social objects (people, groups, time, location) and associated media (data, content) to help manage access.
So come, listen, discuss!

TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Galois Tech Talk: Large-Scale Static Analysis at Mozilla
Roll back
description |

presenter:
Taras Glek
abstract:
A competitive browser market requires fast-paced improvements to the codebase. Such improvements may require significant refactoring of large parts of the codebase. Mozilla Firefox is one of the largest open source C++ projects. Unfortunately C++ is a complex language: method overloading, virtual functions, template instantiation, pointer arithmetic, etc reduce developer productivity. Mozilla developed C++ static analysis and refactoring tools to increase developer leverage in C++. Static analysis is done via Dehydra/Treehydra GCC plugins and refactoring is accomplished by extending the Elsa C++ parser. This talk will discuss why Mozilla needs static analysis, why there are so few tools for C++, and specific projects that we’ve embarked on. |

<i>ABOUT: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional languages, including Haskell, Erlang, OCaml, Scala, and others. The group meets regularly and provides presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. The meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month.
VENUE: We're at the Roots Organic Brewing events room this month, at the corner of Clay and SE 7th. The room's entrance is the glass double doors on Clay, there will be a "pdxfunc" sign on them. There's also an interior entrance in the bar, ask the bartender how to get to the events room or look for a "pdxfunc" sign on a pair of solid double doors.</i>

Abstract
ZigBee is a set of application profiles, built on top of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which defines a low cost, low power, reliable mesh network with guaranteed interoperability with other like networks. IEEE 802.15.4 defines a robust choice of peer-to-peer, star, tree and mesh networks â all optimized for low-bandwidth, low-power monitoring and control. In addition to define the upper layers in the ISO OSI protocol, ZigBee has defined several application profiles including:
⢠Smart Energy â Defines the features of the Home Area Network for Smart Grid enabled appliance, lights, heating, cooling, and electric vehicle charging
⢠Home Automation â Smart lighting, advanced temperature control, safety and security, movies and music, water sensors, power sensors, energy monitoring, smoke and fire detectors, and access sensors
⢠Telecom (mobile) Services â m-payment, m-monitoring and control, m-security and access control, and location aware services.
⢠Building Automation â Energy monitoring, HVAC, lighting, access control, asset management, environmental management, and energy management.
⢠Health Care â secure and reliable monitoring of patients with chronic diseases
This talk with discuss the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, the ZigBee stack, and how the standard is able to support low power sensor networks with and without the ZigBee stack.

Enabling Autonomous and Industrial Robots with NI LabVIEW Robotics
Christoph Wimmer, National Instruments
Wednesday June 9th, 2010 - 7-9pm
Joint meeting of
IEEE Robotics and Automation Society - Portland Chapter
OHSU Division of Biomedical Engineering
Paul Clayton Building, room PC-410
20000 NW Walker Rd
Beaverton, OR 97006
Abstract
From autonomous farming vehicles to medical mobile systems, NI LabVIEW Robotics provides a standard hardware and software development platform for designing robotic control system. The LabVIEW Robotics Module plugs into the LabVIEW development environment and delivers an extensive robotics library with built-in connectivity to robotic sensors and actuators, foundational algorithms for intelligent operation and robust perception, and motion functions for making robots or vehicles move. The NI LabVIEW graphical programming language makes it easy to program complex robotics applications by providing a high level of abstraction for sensor communication, obstacle avoidance, path planning, kinematics, steering, and more.
Speaker
Christoph Wimmer, the National Instruments embedded business development manager for Washington, Oregon, and California. Christoph joined NI in 1998 after graduating from Graz University of Technology in Austria with a masterâs degree in electrical engineering.

As more and more PHP applications move into the object-oriented paradigm,
good design is crucial. Concepts like dependency injection, testing, use of
interfaces and abstraction are important ideas that deserve consideration in
the development of these applications. "Five Tips To Make Good
Object-Oriented Code Better" is a discussion of five concepts in the
object-oriented paradigm that help improve the stability, structure and
maintainability of object-oriented code in PHP.
The speaker, <a href="www.brandonsavage.net">Brandon Savage</a>, is a five-year veteran of PHP with experience working on large
object-oriented applications, and currently works for Message Systems, based
in Columbia, MD.

Season 2, episode 5
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
