description nil Monitoring your Energy Footprint Smart Devices and information systems to help people make better choices about how they use energy are in the early stage of adoption. While many home energy monitoring solutions have been introduced in recent years, no products or services have emerged that have brought about a significant change in consumer behavior. While many devices are technologically sophisticated or cool to look at it seems there is still a need for new innovations and better ways to motivate users to make a lasting change in their energy footprint. The challenge for product developers and entrepreneurs is the development of a comprehensive energy monitoring system for homes that is compelling, easy to use and effective. The Prius dashboard is a good example of a system that is making a real difference in consumer behavior. By providing information to a user on mileage and energy performance it is motivating people to change their driving style. We need to explore ways in which we can have a similar impact on managing one’s personal energy lifestyle. How do you create energy monitoring devices with intuitive interfaces and automatic functions that customers can easily integrate into their daily life? How will consumers be informed about what is possible and how will energy utilities, governments, agencies, or retail channels work to supply the demand? What other issues must be overcome before we see mass adoption of smart energy management devices. We will explore these issues and hear from manufacturers of existing products so that participants can leave with a better understanding of energy monitoring opportunities and challenges. description nil Writing Testable code. You all know by now that you should be unit testing your code, but do you know how? It is unfortunately really easy in flex to architect code which is very difficult to test. In this session, we will explore how to build components and applications in flex which are inherently testable, and see how we test them. Join us Thursday, October 14, for food and networking at 5:30 PM sponsored by Thetus Corporation in association with the PDXRIA User Group. Our speaker, Michael Labriola starts at 6 PM. Michael Labriola is a Senior Consultant at Digital Primates and the Lead Developer for FlexUnit 4. He has been developing Internet applications since 1995 and working with Flex since its 1.0 beta. Michael is an Adobe Certified Instructor, Community Professional, and co-author of the Flex 2, 3 and 4 Training from the Source books and Breaking out of the Browser with Adobe AIR. As an international speaker and team mentor on Flex and AIR projects, he has consulted for many of the world’s most recognized brands. create Calagator::Event 1250459326 Galois Tech Talk: Application of Computer Algebra Techniques in Verification of Galois Field Multipliers: Potential + Challenges Roll back

description nil Presented by Priyank Kalla. Applications in Cryptography require multiplication and exponentiation operations to be performed over Galois fields GF(2^k). Therefore, there has been quite an interest in the hardware design and optimization of such multipliers. This has led to impressive advancements in this area — such as the use of composite field decomposition techniques, use of Montgomery multiplication, among others. My research group has recently begun investigations in the verification of such Galois Field multipliers. Unfortunately, the word-length (k) in such multipliers can be very large: typically, k = 256. Due to such large word-lengths, verification techniques based on decision diagrams, SAT and contemporary SMT solvers are infeasible. We are exploring the use of Computer Algebra techniques, mainly Groebner bases theory, to tackle this problem. In this talk, we will see why Groebner bases techniques look promising, while at the same time also studying the challanges that have to be overcome.

description nil Parrot developers have reserved a room for the above times to meet face-to-face to talk about and hack on Parrot Virtual Machine! The first few hours of the meeting will concentrate on people already involved in Parrot, to talk about which goals Parrot wants to achieve and what people will focus on in the future. Some members of the Board of Directors of Parrot Foundation will be present, and hopefully any local developers that are already involved with Parrot in some way. The latter half of the time slot will be focused towards new users and people interested in learning more about Parrot. Some Parrot developers will hack on their Parrot-related projects, while others will work with those who are new to Parrot, to orient them and discuss what roles they can play in the Parrot community and/or what things need hacking on. Hacking and schmoozing will probably continue after 5pm, but that is when our reserved space ends.

description Writing Testable code with Michael Labriola You all know by now that you should be unit testing your code, but do you know how? It is unfortunately really easy in Flex to architect code which is very difficult to test. In this session, we will explore how to build components and applications in flex which are inherently testable, and see how we test them. Michael Labriola is a Senior Consultant at Digital Primates and the Lead Developer for FlexUnit 4. Get there at 5:30 for pizza, drinks and networking. The presentation will start at 6:00 pm. update Calagator::Event 1250459307 Agile PDX (formerly XPDX) features: Nancy Van Schooenderwoert, "Transient State: From Funding to First Iteration for Embedded Systems" Roll back

description Does everyone at your company respond to change as fast as your agile team? Or do you have critical partners who simply can't move as fast as your team? Are you required to provide detailed estimates in order to get enough resources to start uncertain and complex projects? How do you even build enough buy-in to avoid death by a thousand cuts? In this presentation, Nancy Van Schooenderwoert will explore practical, proven ways to address these questions. Who should attend: Anyone trying to build enough buy-in for their company to give Agile methods a genuine try. Embedded systems developers and project leaders who need to envision the concrete workings of Agile practices in their domain, as a first step to making it happen. Speaker: Nancy Van Schooenderwoert is an Agile Enterprise coach with over a decade of experience applying Agile practices as an engineer, manager, and consultant. She has led Agile change initiatives in safety-critical, highly regulated industries, and coached clients in the art of Agile technical and management leadership. Nancy's experience spans embedded software development and applications in aerospace, factory automation, medical devices, defense systems, as well as in financial services. In 1998 Nancy introduced agile techniques to embedded software, including safety- critical applications. She was among the first to publish advice on the techniques that work in real world embedded projects. She has introduced agile ideas and practices to another field where it was thought to be impossible – data warehousing and large data migrations. Coaches she mentored are now the leaders in this new field applying lean-agile principles to applications where data quality is central. create Calagator::Event 1250459313 OpenSpace Event: Blurring the Line Between QA & Dev in an Agile Environment Roll back

description nil Are you on a software engineering team? Does the project feel like a team effort all of the time? Between butting heads, agendas, communication issues, feature creep and shrinking schedules, these are difficult factors we all experience. If you are in QA, learn how to move your Dev cohort to a test-first mentality. Or jump into a discussion on improving testing efficiency with risk based testing. If you’re Dev, discover how to challenge your QA to add greater technical value throughout the project. Ever thought about co-ownership of code and tests? Come discuss and learn about the possibilities. Join us for this full day Open Space structured event and engage with Agile luminaries such as Ward Cunningham, Wayne Allen, James Shore, Jeff McKenna, Rebecca Wirfs-Brock and Jon Bach. Special thanks to Diana Larson for helping facilitate!
