World Usability Scavenger Hunt
Roll back
description |
Celebrate the importance of usability on World Usability Day on Wednesday, Nov. 10th. To match Portlandâs unique flavor, we have developed a unique urban challenge: The PDX UX Scavenger Hunt. With the theme of communications in mind, teams will comb the urban landscape to find examples of what works, what doesnât, and why in the world around us.
Teams will have from 12:01 am on Wednesday, Nov. 10th until 4 pm on Thursday, Nov. 11th to hunt for a list of communication-themed items. Teams will photograph each of their finds and then upload the pictures to a website so entries can be viewed in real-time. Teams can work together in their own neighborhood to allow hunting as time permits during the day.
Start forming your team today! Prizes will be awarded at the no-host prize ceremony at 7 pm Thursday, Nov. 11th at Bridgeport Brewpub at 1313 NW Marshall Street. |

You don't have to be present to win. The contest is open to everybody on the planet, and it would be silly to expect everyone to fly to Portland just for this.

Season 4, episode 1
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Portland, OR 97205
Dinner Included
Crush 'creativity block' and get inspired by a panel of Portland's creative Mar/Com leaders. You'll head back to the office Wednesday morning ready to put that inspiration into action.
Creative block, we all get it. We hit walls, slip into ruts and take refuge in comfortable old habits. However, creative leaders break through stale ideas to tease out fresh and fabulous ones. And they make it look effortless.
Wanna know how they do it? So do we.
Join moderator Jerry Ketel, Creative Entrepreneur & Champion of Innovation, and a panel of Portland's creative community superstars as they get to the meat of how they make magic happen, even when they're running on nothing but four espressos and a dinner of stale Pop Tarts from the vending machine.
Learn real world solutions to your real world creative problems:
* Where do you find inspiration on demand to meet a hard deadline?
* What do you think makes for an effective brainstorm process?
* Who plays your "devil's advocate" and how do you know it's time to bring her/him into the process?
* How do you choose which creative software to use for a project?
* When you don't know where to start, where do you start? |

Oregon Education Society - Project Lead the Way (PLTW) & the University
Roll back
description |
The Oregon IEEE Education Society Chapter is planning two evening meetings over the next few weeks:
Date: Wednesday 10th November, 6-8pm
Topic: Project Lead the Way (PLTW) & the University
Location:
ECE Department Conference Room (FAB-155)
4th Avenue Building (1900 SW 4th Avenue)
Portland State University
and (TBD) at OIT (Klamath Falls) and OSU, as required.
Both programs will be run using DimDim for remote site participation.
DimDim is the Oregon IEEE Section's system for on-line meetings.
For details of DimDim participation, contact [email protected].
Abstract:
PLTW is a national initiative to develop enthusiasm for engineering careers by experiential learning in middle and high school programs. There some impressive statistics of nationwide successes, with seven Oregon schools currently certified and more on the way. But what comes
next? Can we as tertiary engineering educators maintain the momentum that PLTW creates, or will this new enthusiastic cohort be disappointed by their experience in university engineering programs.
The evening will first provide an introduction to PLTW .... what is it, and how is it developing nationwide and here in Oregon? (Claude Kansaku, OIT Klamath Falls)? This will be followed by examples of high school PLTW activities (Tom Thompson, ODE), some observations of PLTW alums at university (TBD), and general discussion of (a) how tertiary engineering
programs can take advantage of these developments, and (b) keep these students interested.
Agenda:
6.00-6.30pm Refreshments and Social (pizza/soda)
6.30-8.00pm Technical program
Location:
Room: ECE Department Conference Room FAB-155
Bldg: Portland State University
4th Avenue Building (1900 SW 4th Avenue)
Portland, Oregon

Fostering Innovation Through Social Media â Using it Openly But Wisely
Roll back
description |
More than just a hot topic and in the news, Social Media, led by its poster children Facebook® and Twitter ®, has quickly become an integral part of our society. While the use of these tools has become pervasive in our social interactions and many companies have integrated these methods into their outbound marketing strategies, there are fewer examples where Social Media has been used to drive innovation within a technology company.
You will hear from both the industry perspective and the media/marketing perspective on how companies are and should be using these new social media tools foster innovation on company products, services, distribution and customer service. They will discuss collaboration, creating community environments, data mining, facilitating customer feedback and how to integrate this information and collaboration into the companyâs product/service development culture. Learn to balance the opportunity promised by Social Media with the real need to protect your Intellectual Property.
Join us for this informative breakfast meeting and learn how your organization can make the most of this powerful tool.
Speakers:
Kent Lewis, President, Anvil Media, Inc. Kent Lewis is responsible for managing operations, marketing and business development to achieve the search engine marketing agency's mission: to be one of the most respected search engine marketing agencies in the world.
Matt Hixson, Senior Manager, Business Development, Tripwire, Inc. Matt leads the corporate social media strategy and oversees the team dedicated to its implementation. In this capacity, he introduced the first internal blogs within Tripwire to facilitate the exchange of best practices among employees, led the creation of Tripwireâs online user communities and spearheaded the company's presence on Twitter.
Allan Schrock, Sr. Researcher, Nike, Inc. Allan Schrock works at Nike as a technology researcher in the research and development group known as the âInnovation Kitchen.â He has managed patent prosecution and contract negotiations for Nike as well. Prior to Nike, Allan worked as a patent examiner for the USPTO. He received a BE in mechanical engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1988.
