Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers!
We are starting a new book [Confident Ruby](http://www.confidentruby.com/) by Avdi Grimm. This week we will discuss up to page 112 (4.12 Reject unworkable values with preconditions). Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it.
Make sure to grab food before. |

Design Museum Portland – UNITE: The Internet of Things
Roll back
| description |

→ |
As a part of the upcoming ThingWeek, Design Museum Portland is pleased to present an Internet of Things conversation event. Every season Design Museum Portland brings together experts from diverse fields along with communities inside and outside the design world to discuss complex themes in venues around Portland.
Our upcoming panel will tackle how the Internet of Things is disrupting business models, the consumer experience, and how design is driving the disruption. Each UNITE offers the opportunity to gain insight into how design guides professionals of various backgrounds to create successful collaborations and to solve real world problems.
Panel Members:
David Ewald, Chief Creative Officer, Uncorked Studios
Shashi Jain, IoT Innovation Manager, Intel
Skip Newberry, President, TAO
Malia Spencer, Tech Reporter, Portland Business Journal (Our Moderator)
This UNITE event will be held at the new Smarsh, Inc. corporate offices. With over 20,000 customers, Smarsh Inc. is the leading provider of archiving and compliance solutions for companies in regulated and litigious industries. Smarsh is headquartered in beautiful Portland, Oregon with offices worldwide.
This event is made possible through the generous support of Creative Circle. Creative Circle is a specialized staffing agency that connects innovative advertising, marketing, and interactive professionals with companies seeking talent on a full-time or freelance basis. The team is comprised of professionals from the advertising, interactive and marketing industries, giving us first-hand experience into what our clients and candidates experience.
ThingWeek is a week of events connecting ideas, objects, and people to shape the future of the Internet of Things.
The ability to connect everyday objects and capture data from our surroundings opens up a world of opportunity. The Internet of Things can empower us to live safer, healthier, and more productive lives by allowing us to interact with our environments in smarter, more meaningful ways.
As evolving technology continues to open new doors for design, connecting these two disciplines is essential. ThingWeek brings together Portland’s design and technology communities to explore this new frontier.
UNITE tickets are free for members, $10 for non-members. Not a member? Join today! |

What kinds of helpful roles can managers of all types play in relation to Agile teams? And, do they play these roles, or does something else happen?
This month, the AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunchers consider how different kinds of power operate within Agile, what it can feel like for a manager to encounter an "empowered" Agile team, and what reactions can come up.
Bring your war stories and questions on down to Ringlers where we will solve the Agile world's problems with regard to managers, power, and empowered Agile teams over beer and pub grub from 12p to 1p.
RSVP's to [email protected] are welcomed but not required. It's nice to know who many tables to push together! |

SQAUG Presents: The Importance of Abstraction in Automation Projects

SQAUG
Presents:
The Importance of Abstraction in Automation Projects
at
Con-Way
2055 NW Savier, Portland, OR 97209
on
Wednesday May 20, 2015
5:30pm until 7:30pm
Event is FREE and Open to the Public
The majority of automation projects fail, most within the first 6-12 months. Initially it’s easy to put something together that works for a small number of test cases, but as the application evolves, the troubleshooting/maintenance needs of the tests quickly overcome the ability of the team. Eventually (around 6-12 months) a new engineer takes over and restarts the automation effort in a new direction, often with the same issues.
This presentation will be focused on how to use the OOP concept of Abstraction to reduce the maintenance costs of automation and extend the life of your frameworks. Additional benefits will be discussed, like the ability to change the Automation Technology without rebuilding all your tests.
These concepts will work with 3rd party automation products like QTP as well as homegrown frameworks. You will get the most value from abstraction when its added at the beginning of the projects, but we will discuss how they can be leverages in larger, existing frameworks.
Level:
Intermediate. Knowledge of automation concepts along with some basic understanding of development practices will be assumed.
All code examples will be shown in C#, but the concepts will apply to any tool or language.

eBay Tech Tuesday: Reality (Usually) Bites
Roll back
| description |

The (mostly) unspoken reality of startups is that success is the rarity. So, when you’re fighting the battle every day to make things work, yet only hearing about Company A getting yet another round of capital, or Business Z being acquired, it’s easy to feel like you’re a failure.
But your success doesn't have to look like everyone else's. Which is good, since it probably won’t. And honestly, sometimes failure isn't so bad.
This month’s Tech Tuesday is about the difficulties faced in building, launching, and keeping a startup afloat. We’ve put together a panel of local entrepreneurs who will be sharing their stories, talking about the struggles they’ve faced as founders, and discussing what they’ve learned so far.
We’ll also have an Advisor to numerous startups sharing his perspective, insights, and tips.
Panelists:
• Kevin Dewhitt, Founder, PDO Technologies, Inc
• Josh Carter, CEO/Co-Founder, Plunk
• Paul Wagner, CEO/Co-Founder, CloudEngage
• Paige Hendrix, Founder, ClientJoy
• Dylan Boyd, Advisor
Moderator:
• Sara Morrow, Talent Partner, eBay Marketplaces
The combined backgrounds, experience, and personalities of our panelists should provide for a fun, interesting, and educational evening. I hope you’ll join us!
RSVP here: http://bit.ly/1e02bPw
* Pizza and sodas will be provided
* Doors open at 5:45pm, Presentation begins at 6:30pm
* The main lobby doors lock at 7pm. Someone will be available to let you in after 7pm, but please plan accordingly.

Housed in "The Campbell," a residential hotel (now high-end condos) built in 1912, the Rams Head has always had a dignified-but-jaunty air, just a step down off the sidewalk. Its new-and-improved look leaves all its rich historical attributes intact, but features an improved flow and a brightened air. The outdoor seating for those beautiful Pacific Northwest days remains a wonderful spot to have a cool handcrafted McMenamins ales. |

Portland Perl Mongers - Failure: Why it happens & How to benefit from it
Roll back
| description |

Join us back at Freegeek this month for a talk by VM Brasseur on project failure.
Projects fail in droves. Up to 90% of new businesses fail within 10 years. Screws fall out all the time; the world is an imperfect place.
Just because it happens doesn’t mean we can’t do our best to prevent it or—at the very least—to minimize the damage when it does. As a matter of fact, embracing failure can be one of the best things you do for your project. Failure is a vital part of evolution. By learning to love failure we learn how to take the next step forward. Ignoring or punishing failure leads to stagnation and wasted potential.
